Get outta my head! Lol. But seriously Dr Parker in this video you spoke my life this year. In previous years there were times when I wanted to do something other than lab tech but I didn’t have the commitment. I didn’t follow through. Then earlier this year when I decided it was time to follow my dream of becoming a surgical tech I dove in head first. At first I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it. The biggest difference between the years previous and now is my level of commitment. Surgical tech is my dream job. Always has been but I lost sight of that for a while. This year I knew It was time, so I figured out what I needed to do to make it happen and I’m doing it!

I'm currently in pre med. I always thought that people fail because they let themselves fail. This video confirms that, the reason plan A didn't work is entirely your fault, ANYONE can make ANYTHING happen and I think it's really great you tell people they can do it, instead of trying to intimidate them. Fuck plan B, I'm making plan A happen no matter what. Going for anesthesiologist or orthopedic surgeon, by the way

I wanted to go to medical school, when my Mom passed away from complications of congestive heart failure, because I wanted help develop more effective treatments. I wanted help people, where they would not have to suffer like my Mom. However, I studied engineering. Although I like engineering, and have my professional engineering license, I still have feelings of regrets whenever I go to a hospital. I chose engineering as a safe route. My greatest desire with regards to a career is to help people. It seems like being a physician, I would be able to help people more direct.

As long as you want something and keep trying you'll get it eventually. Now don't force it just to be a shitty doctor... but yeah... Thank you for this, I'm 18 and still in highschool. I deal with quite a lot of mental health issues thus my grades going into college are sub par. I accept this and work on it but it's hard. My guidance counselor asked me what I wanted to do after high school my response was, "When I'm completely stabilized I'd like to go to Med school and become a surgeon." Her response was, and I KID YOU NOT "pre med students have mid-high 90's, I think it's a really good idea to think about more realistic options" Of course I got agitated... why'd you bother asking if you're just going to put me down when i talk about wanting to be successful? I've had enough experiences with MD's to know that not all of them had immaculate high school transcripts. Heck I even have a great aunt who entered med school in her 30's, and got her BA after two years at community college in her mid 20's. SO THANK YOU for shutting down the idea that med school is impossible, because it's not, and I think the stigma around MD's needing to be geniuses is really hindering the medical system tremendously. Schools still push STEM but they're also extraordinarily good at degrading a person's potential, it's really quite sad. Imagine the advancements we could have today if people weren't so horrified of being rejected by med programs/school/residency because teachers and faculty make you feel like a complete and total failure if you're not prepared for your MCAT the second you graduate (an over exaggeration but none the less a valid point.)

I don't think I have ever posted a comment on KZbin, but I wanted to tell you to never give up if this is your passion. The pre-med road is long and grueling, but if you are willing to make the necessary sacrifices...you will make it. I graduated high school with a gpa that was slightly above a 2.0, but like your aunt, I returned to college in my 20's and 30's with the determination I needed to succeed. I am 32 now and I begin medical school this July. Never give up.

I graduated highschool with a 2.9 gpa. I worked my ass off and received a full ride scholarship at my college for being a first generation science major. Now I am doing cancer research and work as a scribe. I have made connections with many great people, PhD’s, and MD’s. I had a rough semester due to an abusive relationship, but again, I worked very hard to overcome this and now my GPA is back where it needs to be. I’m proud of myself for not being intimidated by the perfectionists, the privileged, and the odds.

I used to HATE "No". It was the only word in the English language that scared me. I went to trucking school to become an OTR trucker. They dismissed me after I failed a hair follice test (I had smoked Marijuana 2 months prior). My soul was crushed. Decided I would do the military, do Intel or something big like my sister. I scored in the 80 percentile - Qualified for any career I wanted. Unfortunately I had debt so I was told a big fat no on Intel due to my inability to obtain Top Secret clearance due to the debt. I said "Fuck it. I'll do Satellite communications, get a lot of certifications, and after 4 years, once my debt was all paid, re-enlist for Intel. Well, scars from self-harming at age 13 came back to haunt me and I was disqualified from the military. At this point, I felt I had put to much time and energy into making something of myself, I began working on figuring out the new "next big thing". Anesthesiologist. That is where I am now. I really don't even know where to begin, I want to make sure I do this PERFECT. I need to start this path exactly correctly, and conclude it the same way. I appreciate your videos. I'm scouring KZbin for all the best advice on how to go about this career endeavor. A motto I made is "When you go big and they tell you to go home, you just didn't go big enough". Each time I am told "no", I find something bigger. Something better. 3 years ago, I was afraid of hearing "no" and wanted a job making 50-60k a year doing something mediocre. But "no" has become somewhat of a driving force in me to go bigger. Do more. A year ago, I wanted to make 80-100k/yr. I got told No on things more. 6 months ago I wanted 120k/year. I got told "no". Recently I was still settling for a job that challenged me and paid out 120-130k/year (with experience in due time anyways). Now? I want $200,000+/yr. If medical school says No, I think I'll just have to rob a bank or else I'd have to lower my bar (no go), but, I'm optimistic :) Appreciate the videos! !

I have a late start at this in life. Since I dropped out of high school when I was 17 due to being in the hospital for over a year. And just didn't want to go back. But when I turned 24 I said fuck it I know I want to be a surgeon also. I was an emr for a fire department for 4 years and loved helping people the best I could. So when I turned 24 I said fuck it i'm going to finish up high school I don't want my ged I want my diploma so I did that. And the last day of my classes I filled out my application for college. 2 days later I got accepted when I honestly thought college wasn't even an option for me. Now I'm going to be starting my short journey of becoming an Orthopedic surgeon. The one thing that always stopped me from even trying was people telling me I wasn't smart enough, laughing when i told them I wanted to be a doctor, or just putting me down. But now those comments are fueling me to prove them wrong because I can accomplish anything I want to. But anyway thanks for the video it really helped and I completely agree with what you're saying.

It sounds like medical school is time of loneliness, since you are to focus studying. After you finish your career would you say being a doctor is a lonely life too? I’m assuming while you are in medical school for so many years your friends moved on. I remember my ex who was an orthopedic surgeon would only hang out with surgeons or doctors in his job and his boss who was also a surgeon. I was like we are going out and your boss is coming again, can I just bring my friends instead 😳Got tired of the same people Same type of conversations. Surgeons are very different than your medical doctor. They are more geeky, smarter, lonelier, more competitive, more focused and hard working. At least that’s the impression I got by meeting quite a lot of them.

Yes it can be a lonely job in a sense but I’m pretty interactive w all the hospital staff so in that sense no. But yes in really don’t go out a lot and many of my friends stop asking to hang out cause I never can cause I’m always working. But that’s a sacrifice that happens w success. The Rock Dwayne Johnson talks about this as well. He says he is always working so not many friends.

It ain’t cheap to be going to medical school. Besides the tuition, how do you fare paying the rent each month, especially if it’s in NYC or LAX? They’re like around $2,500+ each month. I feel like med students contributes the most to our US economy, borrowing and lending $250,000 and that’s just from one person. Who pays for YOUR rent and boarding and food and car payments?

I actually agree with this completely. I have been a registered nurse for five years now, and I realized I wanted to be a doctor during my last semester of nursing. I love my job as a nurse etc etc but at age 30 I decided it was time. I didn't want to turn 40 and say fuck I should have done it! So yes, put your eggs in one basket and watch it like a hawk! I am married and have one kid and I am borrowing money to get those pre reqs done and get good grades! I am taking a risk and my philosophy is that it is planned to work out. I am doing everything I can and more to have at least one offer out of 10 schools. Good MCAT scores, acute care RN experience for years, good GPA, research, TA for science classes, volunteering etc etc all this while also being a father and a husband. The best thing you can do is to figure out what tou want, and G-E-T I-T D-O-N-E!
