Hey Dr. Parker. Former army combat medic and firefighter going into medicine. I am very passionate about emergency services and I can't see myself doing anything else. I'm looking at either going into emergency medicine or trauma surgery. Can you do a video about EM vs Trauma?

EM doctors don't perform surgeries they stabilize patients before surgeon comes but you see anything from acute abdominal pain,angina to fractures but shortly em doctor stabilize ,trauma surgeons operate !

Hey everyone, just an update. I ended up getting into a US MD school, I am now a first year med student on the Army scholarship. I'm currently focusing on going into General Surgery with the goal of specializing in Trauma. Let me know if anyone has any questions from the pre-hospital side of the house :) If you're reading this Dr. Parker, I'd love to chat with you and pick your brains if you are available.

Love this video Dd.Parker! I'm actually also confused about general ortho vs trauma ortho, we have both of those at our hospital but it seems that gen ortho takes all the calls whether there was a trauma behind the injury or not. I also don't get how you can get an ortho injury without trauma to begin with. It would be great if you can you talk about if you need research to get into specialized surgical residencies and if so what type and when is the best time to do that during medical school? also if you can talk about how to optimize your score for step 1 in a school that offers an 18 months science program instead of the 2 full years and if it helps to do for instance an internal medicine rotation before your boards in that extra semester vs taking your step 1 right after the 18 months.
@drbuckparker

It’s a bit confusing. Some do ortho trauma fellowship, some do ortho trauma if they feel comfortable without the fellowship. Going forward most likely u will need the fellowship.

Great video, thanks for making this Dr. Buck! Def. helps explain the different routes a Gen Surgeon can take after completing residency. The AAST has a list of the 21 programs offering the 2 year ACS Fellowship, and the ACGME shows the programs offering just the 1 year CC fellowship. I think I'll be going the 2 year ACS Fellowship route when the time comes.

I enjoy your videos man! I can’t dream of doing any other profession but general surgery. I have been shadowing one for about 5 to 6 years now and I just can’t get enough. Standing for numerous amounts of hours can be awful. So could you possibly talk about how to become a faster and more effective surgeon? Also could you talk more on the lifestyle of a general surgeon, trauma surgeon, acute care surgeon?

Dr. Parker, great video thanks for the info! I’m currently an M1 and thinking about life in the OR. What trends do you see for the future of medicine let’s say in the next 5-10 years, and what specialties do you anticipate will become more/less important, interesting, competitive, undergo the most change, etc. I would appreciate you comments the thought of choosing a medical specialty right now seems impossible to me.

here in germany trauma doctors (unfallchirurgen) are mostly involved in bony things, which is a bit boring in the long run, wheras the general surgeons (allgemeinchirurgen) are taking the cases with inner organ damage etc. botom line is that it differs from case to case/hospital etc... :/

Andrew bossaller I’m not a doctor but I’m going to be. I just started college and really the best things you could take are obviously your A&P classes (anatomy and physiology) sports medicine if it’s offered and other medicine based classes. Make sure you excel in the sciences though because they play a big role in being a physician. Also what I did was I got my EMT certification which is a good first step into the medical and emergency medicine field. I’m even considering going to paramedic school because paramedics (at least in NY) are a step way above EMTs. They can intubate pts give medications via IV and have a ton of other really cool knowledge. They’re like a step under a doctor. I don’t know though I gotta figure it all out haha. Do your best in HS and learn your best study strategies now. Trust me I wasn’t really the type of person to study in HS because it all came easily to me and now I’m regretting it. College classes are way harder haha. Good luck!

I'm wondering if there is a profession that includes visiting patients during free time and during emergencys performing surgery's. Does a neurosurgeon do this?

Are you in med school yet? When you do your rotations, you will either hate or love your surgery rotation. you literally have to be unable to see yourself happy in any other field if you chose it. Surgery can be absolutely soul sucking and the lifestyle/culture is harsh as hell. My rotation made me realize I was in love with the idea more than the reality of surgery. Ultimately it's s decision that can only be made with experience.

Is there anyway someone could choose to do both a trauma and a vascular fellowship after a general surgery residency so that they would be better prepared for different kinds of trauma injuries and could therefore operate more often and need to consult others less?
