Precious, I want you to know how excited I am to be your newest subscriber. As a Latino pre-med, I have learned how difficult it can to be to find advisors who understand the unique challenges faced by racial and ethnic minorities pursuing a medical education. I am so glad that students who tend to be underrepresented in medicine now have a source of inspiration on KZbin that can help us achieve our ambitions of becoming Medical doctors. I wish you nothing but the best, and hope that your channel blossoms and that you gain the audience you deserve. Looking forward to following your journey Doc!

I am a psych major. I initially wanted a PhD, but I have been wanting go to med school for a while now. I just thought it was a crazy idea and was trying to ignore it. But I feel like I want it more as time passes. I haven't done most of these things, and I am a junior. I just contacted my adviser today about it. I doubt myself all the time, even though something deep down tells me I am capable of achieving it. These videos of med students and their lives are very encouraging. Let's see what I end up doing...

Although I work at Kennestone, I still believe research experience would help. Do you have any ideas for gaining that experience after undergrad? It just seems that it's hard to come by if you have already graduated.
@WhiteCoatChronicles7 жыл бұрын
Hey there! My sister mentioned you to me! Typically I would suggest emailing professors to see if they have any ongoing projects. Since you've already completed undergrad, you could maybe try Quest or CryoLife. They may have lab positions available. I'm not sure the exact type of research you're looking for, but that could be a start. Feel free to message me if you have anymore questions!

@WhiteCoatChronicles7 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJmZlICwjLd2bac I have a video on how I chose my school. How I applied to med school? You fill out a general AMCAS application that is sent to every school. From there, the schools will send you secondary applications, which generally consists of essays. The essay on why I thought I should attend medical school? Look at your personal qualities to express to the school why you are a strong candidate, discuss how you will benefit the class by being a student there, and discuss your passion for medicine.

@WhiteCoatChronicles8 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I would recommend taking a full length practice exam before you start your studies, that way you can get a baseline of your strong and weak areas. Some people take prep courses, but I used the Exam Krackers study books, which I thought was helpful. But practice, practice, practice! The more questions that you see, the more comfortable that you will become. Also, timing with the passages is very important, so practice exams will help with that.

Thank you so much for this video!! 💕 I was wondering if it was okay to start shadowing in the summer following sophomore year of college or is that too late? Unfortunately I had lots of challenges trying to find a doctor to shadow in the summer following my freshman year and ended up not finding anyone. Also, sorry if you mentioned this in the video but when did you start studying for the mcat? And what did you mean in the research part of the video? Did you just mean we must take a research class or is there something wlse we have to do with our professor?
@WhiteCoatChronicles2 жыл бұрын
Sophomore year is definitely not too late. That’s actually a good start and pretty early to start shadowing. Students are just trying to find their bearings during freshman year. I studied for the mcat the summer going into my senior year and applied for med school that same summer/fall. You can join a research project with your professor if they have an ongoing one. Research isn’t a requirement, you don’t have to force it, especially if you’re not interested.

Hello, love this video. So I have a question; Im a pre med student (chem-bio major) and im in my junior year currently. I have NO shadow, volunteer or research hours. My expected graduation is fall 2018. So basically do you think I have enough time to fulfill extracurricular and shadow hrs in time for 2019 application cycle? Or do you recommend a gap year? I really wanna get straight in no breaks...lol
@WhiteCoatChronicles7 жыл бұрын
Would you be applying to enter in the Fall of 2019? Meaning you would start the application process next year, so one year to try to get extracurriculars? That's tough to say. If you have a good gpa and MCAT, then I would try to get some extracurriculars in over the next year and apply. I'm not sure how beneficial it would be to take a full year off to shadow and volunteer. I would probably do that if I had a research position set up or some job/internship that would benefit my career. I would suggest talking to an advisor and getting their input. Good luck with everything!

Hi! I'm a Senior in highschool looking into becoming an ophthalmologist. I have Biology, Earth Science, and Chemistry under my belt. I'm planning on taking Anatomy and Physiology during my senior year instead of AP Bio or AP Chem. What do you recommend? I know many people take AP physics but I have chosen not to due to the heavy workload. Additionally, do people typically retake classes such as chemistry and bio before Med School? I've taken Psychology and many AP math/English classes but I'm not sure if that will help in the long-run.
@WhiteCoatChronicles7 жыл бұрын
stinky lizard hey there! Anatomy is a great course to have under your belt. You'll end up taking all these classes again in college, because it's a requirement for pre med, but it's nice to see it early. I think it's a toss up between AP bio and anatomy. They're both useful courses to take. You can't go wrong with either.

And we have test of chemistry that I like but I am not so good at it. Any tips ?

Your sister is a NP, would you recommend that route over MD, why or why not? Thank you!
@MissaLifeStyle7 жыл бұрын
Also, you made some excellent recommendations. I noticed that the school I wanted to apply to accepted the most students in the 40-90 percentile range for MCAT and 3.5-3.7 GPA range. I believe this probably had to do with the fact they were more well rounded than people who only spent their time studying. At least that is what the director mentioned when giving advice about admissions. :)
@WhiteCoatChronicles7 жыл бұрын
NP is a great career option, and it provides flexibility as far as what type of setting you can work in. Doc office, ER, hospitalist, surgery, etc. You have the ability to switch throughout your career. The program is about 2 years, so that's a plus. It really just depends on the person and their preference. Of course there's a large difference in pay and autonomy, but some people will take that trade off for less years of schooling and post graduate training.
@WhiteCoatChronicles7 жыл бұрын
It's always good to remember that those numbers are averages, and there are always students who are accepted with higher or lower stats than those averages. A well rounded application is key :)
