34-36 is literally the same in the eyes of admission officers and are all 99th percentile. the difference weather you get into Harvard depends on the rest of your app, not 34 vs 36. its the same once you get a 1530/1600 on the sat- a higher score won't make a difference. No college is gonna say oh this kid has a 1600 that means he's smarter than the 1530 kid, lets take him for that. "Let's make something clear: for all intents and purposes, a 34 on an ACT is equivalent to a perfect 36. No top college is going to give you more credit for a 36 than a 34. You've already crossed their score threshold, and whether you get in now depends on the rest of your application. So if you're already scoring a 34, don't waste your time studying trying to get a 36. You're already set for the top colleges, and it's time to work on the rest of your application." blog.prepscholar.com/how-to-get-36-on-act-math-8-strategies-by-a-perfect-scorer

@@owenwu4708 But sometimes it does matter. If you look on naviance and find the acceptance scatter plot of students from a specific high school, than you will most likely see a trend of higher acceptance rate of students with higher test scores even with the same GPA. I mean this might have something to do with the rest of their application, but for my school, everyone that got a 1600 SAT got into Harvard.....which is kind of concerning because most of those people are known among the students to be arrogant and would do anything to get a higher GPA. Anything.

The acceptances seem pretty random...I had a friend who got perfect scores on the SAT and ACT, had a 4.0 GPA, and was a section leader for the entire trumpet section. He got rejected and waitlisted for his top choices. His friend (who got a still pretty decent but definitely not perfect score on his SAT and ACT and had a 3.5 GPA) got into Darthmouth and UPenn. I'm really worried for when I apply since it really seems to be a crapshoot.

you never know if someone has the hooks (URM, athlete, legacy, connections) which would sway a decision to accepted even with lower scores. many times its not really that much of a crapshoot. we just don't see the full picture.

Ivy also look at what type of school you go to. It is MUCH MUCH MUCH harder to get into ivy if you are in a mediocre public school... no matter how exceptional you are. Getting into the top 10% of your class at a competitive well-scoring school is a lot harder than getting into the top 1% at a low-scoring one. My grades are good enough to carry me into the top 10% of most schools but I barely manage to stay in the top 50% at my current school. To even break into the top 15%, you need to be scoring all As and to score in the top 3, all your averaged need to be near-perfect (98%, 97%). That normally requires about 6 to 10 hours of studying, not including school hours, and is certainly not easy.

I’m a Junior right now and honestly thinking of college throughout high school has just been very stressing so I ignored it all. Now I’m coming toward an end. I’ve done good in school I’ve had 4.0 all year freshman and sophomore year and currently have a 4.0 as a junior. The only thing is that is that that’s it. I don’t do sports our school is small so they’re isn’t that many clubs. I joined honor society but I never showed up to any of the meetings and I didn’t take the pre SAT thing. At the moment I didn’t realize how important it was and so I didn’t take it. I just really feel like these decisions I made really fucked up my future, but then again I’m not really well educated on what you actually need to get accepted by colleges. It’s just very stressing to me thinking about the future and going to college. And now I’m half way through my junior year and I still haven’t even looked into colleges or come to a decision of what I want to study for. I just feel like I’m a weak person compared to everyone else cuz I see people just casually moving with the flow of life and I’m over here struggling and stressing. This got way to emotional and serious but it’s true lol. But hopefully I pull through and manage to get through this.

I haven’t taken SAT’s yet but do you think I need to improve my grades and extracurricular’s? thanks

well you know they can't accept every single person with good grades. It depends on the quality of your extracurriculars. What do you do outside of academics that make colleges appeal to your character? It's too competitive nowadays for it to be JUST about grades

For the majority of the time, it really depends on your hook, and the "light" they see in you based on your application

I’m a freshman in high school and I really want to get into an Ivy League school. I take two AP classes and I have a 4.3 gpa. I’m involved in student council, debate club, and DECA. I’m really worried about my sat/act scores. Does anyone have any advice on ways to prepare for the sat/act?

Hey! I’m freshman with the same story. I would suggest buying a prep book ( I got mine on amazon ), and creating a Khan Academy account. With these materials you can take practice tests and learn what you need to work on in the test.
@kevincaotong7 жыл бұрын
I'm currently a sophomore and I recommend Khan Academy SAT Prep. A student at my school got a 1570 on the SAT by apparently working on the content and practicing on Khan Academy for 1-2 hours a day for a whole month as a sophomore (this was last year) and he got a perfect score on the PSAT. I personally improved my practice SAT score from ~1350 to ~1520 over the course of about a year by doing Khan Academy material on and off every once in a while. Honestly, if you really dedicate yourself to it, you can score very high. And dang, 2 APs in freshman year? My school doesn't let us take any freshman year. But since you're taking 2 APs freshman year, you might want to plan out which APs to take later on, because it's highly recommended to take more APs as you get further into high school. So that means you'd have to take at least 3 sophomore, 4 junior, and 5 senior. Good luck!

Realize that the ACT and SAT don't test your knowledge so much as they test your comprehension and ability to critically think a test through. First step in the process is to pick the test best suited to you. The Princeton Review has a quiz called "ACT, SAT, or both" that's helpful. The next piece of advice I have is this: do not be afraid to take the test multiple times. It is not unusual to struggle the first time. For instance on my first ACT I made a 24 on the English section, the second time I made a 36, and this is typical. My last piece of advice is less straight-forward. When preparing for the test you choose, study the format and parameters of the test just as much as (if not more than) the actual material the test covers. There are several resources that frame their study guides in this manner. My study resource (I cannot for the life of me remember what the book was called) went into detail about certain questions that will likely be on the test and how to handle them. I distinctly remember being told to save the "two scientists" question for last on the science section of the ACT, and to "Christmas tree" my answers for that question if I ran out of time. The test is a foe to be beaten, it's not smarter than you. If you can figure the test out, you can make a perfect score. Again, these tests are less about actual knowledge and more about critical thinking. Good luck!

Do I need to fill out all tens slots on the common application? I definitely heave things that set me apart, but I do not have 10 different things.
@xaviersage73467 жыл бұрын
J Jj hey, I have done a lot of research about college applications. It is actually better to NOT fill out all 10 slots. Unless you have spent a lot of time on the activities, do not put it on there. Basically, only put what activities you spent a lot of time on and the ones that you care a lot about. Really, the biggest thing is to write a "story" about you throughout your application. Don't put down everything you've ever done; put down what helps paint a picture of you for the admissions office.

I remembered when I ran for president and the other candidate won because she received more votes than me based on her popularity. I was the new student and a fresh face in the school, so not a lot of people recognized me. After the candidate speech I was told by many students(some that I've never even met before!) that my speech was clear and on point. My teachers also came to me and told me that my speech was well written(which I felt kind of bad because the other candidate was in the same class as me but only received a "great job" as a complement). After the election one student told me, that "Your speech was really good! But I'm sorry, I voted for my friend." I told her that it was okay and I did't think it was a big deal, but I just want to say that sometimes people tend to vote for whom they're friends with rather than someone who'll actually make changes to heir school, and I find it truly unfair to candidates who put in all their effort trying to gain their student's approval.

I'm running for president in a few weeks, any advice on what I should be saying in my speech and some things you did to campaign?
@sheilal59806 жыл бұрын
Keep it simple and short, don't write a whole essay. I will say two paragraphs max and keep it on point. Don't talk about meaningless stuff or go off topic. For me, I focused on the problems we had in school (plastic and pollution was a big topic we were learning about, and it was surprisingly a HOT topic among the students😂 so I focused more on that). Also, NEVER EVER PAUSE OR MAKE MISTAKES WHILE DELIVERING YOUR SPEECH! A fluent and confident speech is by far the most important lol.

Hi, I really enjoy watching your videos and subscribed today. I wanted to ask a question. I have not applied to college yet, and honestly don't know when I will. However, I have been working full time (night shift) to support my parents and younger siblings. I have been doing this for 5 years now. I'm working as an Application Analyst. Do you think writing about my job would be of any help when I apply for college?
