I'm currently a senior in high school and going to major in political science. Do you have any tips on when/how to secure an internship in DC? I know my local congressmen is retiring soon and it's probably better to intern where I'm from rather than where my college is. Also, did you major in political science? I'm a bit worried because of some of the online reviews about the major and its job prospects lol, but I love the topic and really want to work in congress and in political campaigns. TLDR; too many ambitions and not really sure how to start and what to prioritize in college to be really successful

Evan Smith Hey thanks for reaching out, I hope my videos can be somewhat of help to you. I did major in political science but I also majored in communications because you’re right it is hard to get a job with just political science unless you really craft your resume and hone your skills in a hireable area. I’ve been working on building my resume and have diversified my portfolio through adding a second-degree so it makes me more attractive to employers. I would definitely suggest getting a double major or minor or something along those lines. There are lots of ways to get internships you don’t have to go through your representative if you don’t want to work for the house or the senate. You can look for some other organizations that you’re interested in located in Washington DC. It is best to intern with in your home district but it’s not impossible to intern with another representative

I’m extremely interested in politics but my age gets in the way a lot. I’m a pretty far left person, I was always interested in presidents and then began to get interested in politics in 2016 because my grandfather likes talking about politics, he does share the same views as me but I get my information myself. I hope to make it to House Of Reps. and take it from there but you have to start from the bottom and work your way up. I come from a largely democratic state so it may be easier than other states. My question is, how can you get politically active at a young age?

Hey Daniel, I’m excited for you! There is no age limit on when you can get politically active. I would reach out to your local state party or political organizations near you and ask to volunteer. There’s lots of free events you can attend to meet politicians, help out, and learn more about involvement. Then when you’re older you can maybe start working for them or doing internships. I would really suggest more than anything talking to people on both the left and the right regardless of your own opinions so that you can learn from all different types of people. Even if you don’t agree it’s a really great way to strengthen your own beliefs and make you even better in the future. Best of luck I know you will do great!

@@bayvlogs8945 While there may be no age limit, it is a bit harder when your younger because parents have to supervise and I don’t live very close to a huge city. I have been getting into civil debates with people, I provide evidence ( a lot of the time .GOV) to back up my claims. I will probably become an intern when I’m older and hopefully be sworn in as a congressman, senator, or even a president, I know the chance of me becoming a huge politician is small but It’s still a chance. I do talk to both sides but I have much more liberal friends, I didn’t be friends with them just because they are democrat it’s just that as I learned more I found more liberal traits in them. Your one of the nicer republicans out of all the ones I met, most of the time I say that I’m a democrat, republicans respond saying TRAITOR! Our country is currently like a family fighting because no one is a traitor to the family unless they murder the family, family members can move but they are still family. Thanks for responding!

I just saw your comment, sorry that I didn’t answer sooner. I can try and make a stats and GPA video about UW, But looking into some of the schools own data might be more helpful than me. And yes this definitely does apply to highschoolers! You are never too young to get involved in politics, I started when I was in high school as well and it really gave me a good steppingstone for when I went into politics in college and now in Washington DC. Start wherever you can and make a name for yourself even in your local community, it will take you far

How old do you need to be to reach out to politicians? Should you be at least 16? I’m only 14 and I want to pursue politics.

You can reach out to them at any age! If you just want to get in contact with an office you’re more than welcome to call or write them. But if you want to do an internship you usually need to be in college. But showing people that you are interested in trying to get involved can happen now! If you really want to start a career in politics I would recommend starting at your local level
