Bro at 3:02 come on man, that is absolutely atrocious and likely dangerous (to the back) form for the squat. You gotta correct that. Can't believe you didn't correct his form there, and I am not a guy that comments on form (like everybody else seems to do) on videos. But come on man.

Yup. Starting Strength is the shit. In my 50s, I've been lifting since the early 80s, reading Flex, M&F, etc. Believe me I've tried every program out there (anybody remember Cybergenics? There's a blast from the past...). High volume, low volume, HIT, Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty (the only other program I gained muscle on, but nothing like SS). You name it. Finally, in my late 40s/early 50s even I gained TONS of muscle, gained next to nothing on almost all of those. And, turns out it was the eating specifically where I was going wrong. I wasn't eating enough. Not enough calories, not enough protein. I love Starting Strength.

Yes, I remember Cybergenics. When I started working out the first time years ago my dad recommended it. I remember it was insane, I couldn't do it.

I think those pics of the chubbiness that comes along with the novice lp don’t look too bad, I think the comments that you get from people aren’t based on actually seeing you as fat or chubby, they are based on the wtf factor of changing yourself so rapidly.

To be honest even when he was all bulked up I don’t think he was overly fat. He looked decent and strong. I’m not a fan of the shredded look anyway.

Loved it! Went through same process, one year of going from 177 to 233 and then year 2, back down to 200 with the help of intermittent fasting. Grant can you do a video on programming for during that cut, you said less volume what else? Thx!

Eat when you’re hungry. And rest when you’re tired and lift when you’re recovered. That’s how I gained muscle and stayed fairly lean. You don’t need to go to those extremes mentioned in this video.

Aesthetics = health at least until 10-15% body fat. Being fat is catastrophic for health, especially in the long term, so you don't wanna stay fat and strong(er) for long periods of time.

@@senzatieee 20% bodyfat is not catastrophic for health, especially if you're deadlifting 500. In fact, the sweet spot for minimizing mortality if you're over 65 is somewhere in the 20-25% bodyfat range. Because fat keeps you alive when you get hospitalized. Skinny 80 year olds die quick. Obese 80 year olds (40% bodyfat) die quick. 80 year olds with 20% bodyfat who are squatting more than their bodyweight don't die quick. 10% bodyfat is unhealthy. Maintaining that requires mild starvation.

I *really* hope a video exists or is in the works that would explain how you did the cut. If not, where can I look for guidance in programming intensity while dropping volume plus how much strength it is acceptable to lose and when to stop, etc?

Im 41 years old. Ive been working out since I was 14 give or take. Ive NEVER had to get fat to get muscular.... in fact, I only eat one meal a day. I guess it depends on your goals. But most people would like to achieve my body type to be honest. Lean and muscular. Think Calvin Klein underwear models. And for that you dont "need" to get fat... You just work out and try to eat enough protein.

I never had to get that fat to achieve my current physique. I’ve never heard of all this bulking and cutting bs until youtube got popular. I keep it simple; I eat when I’m hungry, rest when I’m tired and lift when I’m recovered. People tend to overcomplicate things so it can sell and make them money.

​@@capswole81Absolutely.... Unless of course you're trying to get HUGE in which case yes. You'd need to ingest AN INSANE amount of calories daily. But the "tiny detail" is that you'd need to "juice" like a mad man as well to even allow the body to go over its NATURAL weight ceiling.

I agree.. I'd much rather gain strength a bit slower and skip the painful cutting on the back end. I've been eating probably 200-500 below maintenance but focusing on protein intake. My lifts are still going up as a mid-beginner. Not as fast as when I was starting from 0 and eating 500 cals over maintenance, but maybe 75% as fast which isn't bad. My body has recomposited and I look and feel way better than if I was fat

Question: You said he's now at about 205 and that's where he wants to stay but you are again working with him to gain strength. But to gain strength doesn't it require him to again gain muscle and therefore be in a caloric surplus which would result in at least some weight gain beyond 205? Thanks

No. 205 is more than enough mass to gain significant strength. Those numbers he got at 230lb body weight can be achieved at a weight well under 200lbs.
