Sorry to hear of the troubles brother! I am making a video on how to get the O3 At Unit to power up to full output. But also had a million projects to finish up the past month. I’m guessing you could have to do the HAM file (or fcc) hack, and then you could run an Arduino to unlock full power (using an FC to unlock the full output is actually really hard if using a ground remote). Best of luck either way you go, but if you reply and say you’ve had a change of heart I’ll grind out that Unlocking O3 video for you 🤙

Have you ever looked into using a flying drone as a signal repeater for your car? I wonder if some of the drones with "follow-me" functionality could be used to follow your car instead- then you could run an additional rx/tx on the drone to make it behave as a relay! Could be really good for range, as long as the car:drone channel is separate from the drone:operator channel.

What would you recommend to a novice for FPV for just general short range? Something along the lines of 2500-5000ft distance? Is there any easy to set up budget builds you could recommend? I want to FPV a Traxxas XMAXX for running across a few open acres of property, and a Arrma Vendetta for some light street racing around my neighborhood. I'm fairly clueless on setups and what I would need to buy to get everything done without making too many financial mistakes while learning what I need.
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
Going behind trees or houses is tough, and requires a lot of output power from the VTX and a good remote. Your goal of 5000ft is not a “novice distance”. Unless you’re in a totally open field and you’re standing on a hill. That being said, you can get the range you’re looking for with the right gear. The Rush Max Solo (linked in description) and good antennas can get your video beyond the normal range of your Spektrum remote. Swap in a RadioLink RC6GS v3 radio and receiver for a bit more range, or get technical with the new radiomaster mt12 and have more rc range than you’ll need. If you want a system built for you just let me know 🤙

So getting higher up to get range and connection, instead of finding high ground could you get a tower and set up the antenna on said tower so you don't have to climb on top of the roof? There is a 24' telescope camera tripod I found on Amazon that I think would be high enough. Then just run the wires down it and hook into witch ever screen you are using..... also perhaps putting the transmitter antenna up there as well. I'm sure this wouldn't go as smooth as it does in my head, but this is the system I'm looking at building. Would you have any input towards maybe things I would need to think about doing something like this? Quite the goal, my dude! But yes, you’re on the right track with the telescopic mount. That style of “ground station” has been common for years and I’ll make a video showing off mine at some point. There’s some things you’ll likely need to get that kind of distance, like a very directional antenna (a TrueRC X2-Air is a good option) and likely an antenna tracker (though that is a pretty complicated setup, honestly). Remember it a hobby and that goal will not happen on the first try, but it can happen if you keep at it! 🤙

Multipathing is the beast you fight on the ground. Noise-floor is (generally) the opponent in open air. Linear isn’t so bad in the air for this reason, especially on most digital systems 🤙 This is mostly a generalization^, but it is what most people will encounter with the RF in each scenario. Ground FPV is a whole different game.

Hi awesome video currently working on my build I was wondering if you have any recommendations for budget friendly video reviver screens or alternatives if it’s worth noting I’m going for an analog build
@ChaddRainsFPV8 ай бұрын
Thanks dude! So screens are tough because the receivers that are normally built in aren’t very good. There sensitivity isn’t as high as say an ImmersionRC RapidFire receiver. Since you’re on a budget, just try to find a good review of a 7” (or bigger, preferably 10” imo) diversity FPV screen and then get some quality patch antennas for it. Keep your VTX cool and put a tall antenna on that and your video should be able to out range most stock rc car remotes 🤙

What's wrong with linear antennas? In quads we use omni antennas because most of the time they roll and flip and so does the antenna. RC cars on the other hand almost always move on yaw axis and antenna stays upright. Linear ones actually have higher gain ).
@ChaddRainsFPV9 ай бұрын
It’s the radiation pattern changing when the signal bounces off of surfaces (like the road). Gain isn’t super helpful if the signal has bounced 3 times and you’re picking it up. Cross-polarization problems 🤙

It shows there’s a wire for video (which is a signal wire that can go directly to a camera), 2 wires for powering the VTX (red wire and black wire) and power wires for the camera (sometimes also red and black but check the writing on the VTX). There are also words in most cameras showing wish wire is which. It should be pretty straightforward once you see those 🤙

But I have a question: 1- in absence of a flight controller, I can power the vtx from a lipo (much vtx s support up to 6s lipo) and power up the camera from the vtx 5V bec, but in this way I wouldn’t get telemetry… How have you done the fpv system? Have you got telemetry? Also I have to power up the whole thing from a different lipo and not from the one who power up the car and the receiver… Please reply to me, I am very curious
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Correct about telemetry, we typically don’t need the same level of telemetry/OSD on cars, as we do on drones. The repercussions of a failsafe or running low on battery isn’t so bad on a car. You can usually stand up and get your rc link back, then you have to turn around. And if you run out of battery, your esc goes into low power mode and you’ll have to come home at like 5mph lol. A few radios will have good telemetry though. I’ll be posting my link to the MT12 along with a bunch of videos showing how to use ELRS on cars. That will likely be the radio I recommend moving forward. For analog, it really is best to power from a separate LiPo. RC car’s motors and ESCs have so much more noise than drones, it’s best to avoid all the interference and just go with a separate battery 🤙

I immediately subscribed. And the explanation is very very good and easier to understand. Have you tried the AKK and Foxeer 5 watt? Then using rapidfire, rapidmix or fusion or like the new module of the speedybee? although im using fpv quad, im using geprc rad mini 1 watt for my micro 3 inch quad. For the Directional antenna on analog, what is "the best" directional antenna for the analog goggles? And ELRS is the hype for 2.4ghz. But for me, its still confusing and tricky to set up. I hope it will be like from the tbs that its easier to bind.
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the sub! I have tried AKK VTXs way back in the day (years ago) but have not recently. RushFPV has made such good products I have just stuck with them (and like 95% TBS VTXs before that). Also have not tried Foxeer in a long time but will be getting the new 5w one when I can. For best directional antenna, it’s easily the TrueRC X-Air2. Nearly 180 degree horizontal beam, plenty of vertical beam and high gain. It’s just a little big, but again, easily the best performance. For ELRS, it gets easier and better with every update. I recommend ELRS a lot but for some people, they would be better just waiting until there’s a better configurator / it’s built into betsflight.

Hi Chadd, together with a colleague we got fascinated with the videos from cloudrc and thought of getting into RC cars with the aim of creating a stable fpv rc car controlled using a sim rig (steering wheel and pedals). We never actually touched rc cars and don't really know where to start. As far as I've researched, what we are looking for is a long range control and video system. We would like to use a screen instead of goggles. I think the main parts we need are a good vtx+antenna+receiver (for the video) and a good link+receiver+antenna (for the controls). Any way to help us out?

So there aren’t any systems (currently) that have range like CloudRC but low latency like DJI or Analog. DJI has the most range of any system, while keeping its low latency. I’d say the max speed of a high latency system like cloudRC is around 15mph; even slower if the signal isn’t great or there are a few obstacles. You can email me too. Change your TX packet rate (refresh rate) to 50hz and change your power to 250mw. I get around super dense neighborhoods with no problems with these settings. If you have your refresh rate up too high you have less latency (which is good for racing) but it’s not needed for FPV at all 🤙

My dude, I have been having the same problem with 1.3ghz. That’s why I haven’t made any videos on it. Truth is, 1.3ghz is a small band for most of us. If there are others using it in your area, you’ll have bad range. 5.8ghz is way more forgiving 🤙

I had good results using 1.3 or 1.2 trying different frequencies and Crossfire 915mhz.
@Magneticitist Жыл бұрын
You are not alone. It took this video for me to finally read about yet another person who had issues. I used to think it was because diversity receivers were the key, and impossible to find these days.. But you are using a clearview and still having issues, AND also using 433 instead of 915 like I am for control. Crossfire presents problems for me with 1.3g and notch filters are not going to do much when the output power of the Crossfire tx is reaching 500mW or higher. That aside, it seems like there is just no penetration with the 1.3g. Or, it equals about what you might expect from maybe 600mW on 5.8g analog. Another guy who does FPV said he had the same issues first messing with 1.3g and actually got better range with 5.8ghz.. so the joke is actually true for some people. The more bench testing I did on my vtx's the more I got confused at what the problem with each one could be. I tried 3 of the ones available from Amazon or Ebay. Generic looking deals advertised as 800mW or sometimes 1.5W. I also tried a Partom unit from Aliexpress which is also rated 800mW. Then I have 2 RMRC 800mW transmitters. The RMRC's are the confusing bit because they seem consistent and reliable to me. I get the impression with the RMRC VTX and RX I could do pretty well with a good ground station that actually uses a pepperbox or something. With my singularity antennas or using a crosshair xtreme v2 the range is only decent with fair LOS. Otherwise I get patches of noise every foot I travel or something like that. The other transmitters I tried were all basically garbage though. I got the impression they were basically burned out already or something. One or two of them I might have done myself, because there is no legitimate way to cool them by just putting a fan on them unless you take them apart and actually heatsink them better. They come basically with pieces of tape or something jammed in between the internal ground shield and the exterior sink, so they are basically just going to burn up within the first 30 minutes of use. Some may draw quite a bit at startup, then quickly drop to like 400mA current draw. Some may consistently pull around 600mA. They tend to vary to an extent where I get the impression they are just all old garbage nowadays and nobody cares because the 1.3ghz fpv market has all but been exhausted. The units will work fine for most people just as CCTV cam setups but for FPV they suck. Another thing to consider is that at ground level some degree of constant noise without LOS may just be a reality.. and at that point the actual monitor you are using at the time can matter because it will have a certain threshold at which it decides to no longer give you a feed at all and just blank out. I can drive further when using my TV as a screen compared to some cheap CCTV monitor for example, which will eventually go to a blue screen when the noise gets too high.

For sure! The RadioLink FPV function isn’t great, because the 5.8ghz receiver that RadioLink makes isn’t very good (and it is analog only). The RadioLink radios do have great range for someone just starting out. They can use a crossfire module too, if you need more range down the road. If you want to make it through the neighborhood, it’s best to go with a DJI Air Unit and DJI v1 or v2 goggles. The O3 Air unit is hard to use so only go that route if you have the technical ability, and you’ll also want to avoid the v1 goggles if you go that route. Let me know if you have other questions. I have been limited to exploring FPV around the house due to the rainy weather. While I enjoy the FPV experience, I discovered that wearing goggles makes me dizzy. I'm now looking for an alternative option such as a screen. Shout out to Dan (the guy from the park) who was kind enough to help me jump into the world of FPV!! Advanced class ham here. You want vertical or horizontal polarization. You can be vertical and your friend can be horizontal. Cross polarization is a 20db loss and that's a lot. Beyond that a beam antenna with pan & scan tracking on your ground station. Then on the car. At these frequencies you really do need to be able to see the car's antenna. The rule of thumb for transmitter power is that to get a noticeable difference you have to double the power. There is no effective difference between 2W and 2.5W. The lower the frequency the greater the range. If 900MHz is available try that. Sorry, I should delete this but that's the way I remember the radio stuff. I'm doing a self-driving thing with a Raspberry pi, sensors, cameras and stuff. I'm not very far along with the sensor software. It uses a Linux laptop, wifi, a joystick and a wheel instead of RC stuff. (my first RC car was at 27MHz with a prop on an .049)
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
I appreciate the advice and from a fellow RF enthusiast and I respect the opinion. But please check out my demo video for clarification (it’s like 3 videos back). You do not need to see your antenna (line of sight). You do not need vertical or horizontal polarization. And the difference on paper and the difference in the real world are very apparent, in regards to the 25% increase in power (though to be fair it is a small difference compared to some other things). My demo shows my car going through several ‘city blocks’, between houses, trees, cars, etc. I’m using 5.8ghz for video (digital protocol which does help a lot). Circular polarized antennas are key and using opposite polarization (left and right) definitely help mitigate stomping each other while driving (thanks for the exact dbm spec on opposing polarizations 🙏). The antenna tracker would be sweet but for now I’m getting away with ‘stacked’ directional antennas ( I’m sure there is a proper name for the design but I’m getting a “squashed” beam if you will, like a biquad design but circular). Hope this info / message didn’t come off wrong. I actually really appreciate the comment; I help a lot of people here with really simple questions a lot so it’s great to get some critical thinking in from time to time 🤙

@@ChaddRainsFPV At these frequencies smoke and the humidity will reduce signal strength. The light we see is just RF at a higher frequency then what we're using. Your radio can see thru things better then you because the frequency is lower and sometimes the signal can be seen like a reflection in a mirror. That's called multi-path. That's what gives you hot spots. "can you hear me now" If I understand circular polarization it is first horizontal then vertical or the reverse for right and left. It's for satellites, there's something about polarization getting screwed up passing thru the atmosphere, magnetosphere or something. I seem to remember Yagi antennas that are a series of crossed elements for working satellites. They look cool but I never built one. Power is ERP or effective radiated power. It's what comes out of the antenna. A Yagi can really up your erp without being too directional. A stacked antenna is one antenna on top of another. Each antenna is less effective then the last but it's as good as an omni can get. Most of your signal is still going the wrong way but for receiving bigger is better. It should be a better quality antenna overall so there's that. To max out a video receiving rig you'll need a directional antenna mounted directly to the receiver, to avoid feed line and cash loses. If it's on the goggles and the operator looks down, well it will all go to waste. The goggles need cameras so you can pip the real world. And stereoscopic vision and... I'll check out your videos. I need better hardware and you're looking for better stuff.
