Thanks Chris. I personally use the T-Racks clipper first, then I use the Fabfilter Pro L2. Would love to get your take on your fav clipper and Limiters for this purpose and how you approach this using a clipper.

What is the advantage of two limiters versus using a compressor first then a limiter?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline Жыл бұрын
Using 2 Limiters will just make your life easier if you want a Loud Master. The goal is to share the load of one Limiter with 2 Limiters. You can still add a Compressor before that as a glueing tool if you need to.

Hi Chris, good to see the "Raiser" in use with the standard Cubase Limiter; its visual graphing of the signal is I find a very good way of understanding just how often and how much the limiter is having an effect which was difficult to assess with the standard limiter. Will definitely give your technique a try but will listen carefully too as well as watching!!

Hi Chris ! Very very nice. Thank you so much for your video. I use a pretty similar technique here : in a mix with peaks at around -6dB, I put a first limiter and add few -dBs, maybe 2 or 3. After that, I put a soft clipper, just to catch the peaks at around -3dB. And a second limiter, to achieve the job. And ... very important detail : the two limiters and the soft clipper works in dual mono, not stereo link. It adds a little sense of wide. Very nice and cool trick Chris. And the track used in this tutorial is just amazing. Greatings from France. 🇨🇵😉

Hi Chris, thanks for this video. I'm a cubase user myself, and master my own Techno music. I've been using the cubase Limiter & brickwall limiter for mastering, What would be best for the release time, fast release or halfway? By the looks for things, most mastering has a fast release time on limiters.

Thanks Chris, I always tried to avoid using consecutive limiters. (I just thought I was trying to fool Mother Nature...) But, with polite limiting followed by Raiser, you still had transients and a sense of dynamic range. This trick is going in my Tool Box!

Hey I guess this is a fairly basic guide to help people getting into mastering. Is there a reason you leave 1dB of headroom? I use riser to barely knock the top off my peaks at -1dB then use the maximiser to gently push into fire the clip to chop a small amount of peaks. Then maximiser in Cubase to gently lean on a final brick wall limiter set to -.2 so is there a reason you leave 1dB of headroom???
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline Жыл бұрын
The -1db headroom is recommended by Streaming services to avoid unnecessary distortion and overloads. I would set it up to -0.2 if my master was for CD. Hope that helps :-)

I set the limiter on my master to -1.0db, I can see it just below clipping, and it sounds great. I mix it down and listen to the mp3 and it's still way too quiet. Why?
@StayFunKey
@StayFunKey Жыл бұрын
If you see the first limiter only reacting to the snare, is it wrong then to lower just it's volume with let's say 1db? So that the limiter is going to react to the whole mix. Or does it then find another element in your mix to react to?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline Жыл бұрын
With Pop, Country, and Rock, the snare often is upfront, and will have the Limiter react to it. I would lower the snare in the mix only if I think the snare is not well balanced with the other instruments, but not just by looking at the Limiter in Mastering.

Seriously couldn't tell the difference between 1 or 2 limiters. Normally I actually use 3 on my 2 bus, lol.
@heyiplaybassguitar
@heyiplaybassguitar Жыл бұрын
I couldn't really tell either, listening on headphones! But I know the compression is "less transparent" when overworking a single limiter VS sharing the load across multiple. In Cubase, I like to use the Multiband compressor > Raiser > Maximizer... sometimes a final Limiter, if I'm feeling crazy and need to get that LUFS up 🤣
@dodgingrain3695
@dodgingrain3695 Жыл бұрын
@@heyiplaybassguitar Typically I use ozone maximizer to get the level up some, Weiss MM-1 for character if I'm looking for punch or width and then a final ozone maximizer to get the last bit of level. Often the first maximizer isn't even doing any compression, the weiss will do 1-3 db and the last ozone might do another 1 or 2 db of compression with over peak limiting. All that gets turned of for the mastering engineer but I leave it on for the artists evaluation of the mix and I'll give the version with the limiters on to the mastering engineer as a reference for the direction it needs to go in when he masters so generally there are no suprises for the artist when they hear the mastered version. Half the time they can't tell the difference between the mix and the final master.
