How To Get More Distance Disc Golf
Have you ever thrown some of your discs in a field, only to find that many of them attain similar distances…How could that be? Why aren’t the faster-speed discs going further than the slower-speed discs?
Although there could be many reasons for this, one main contributor is that the disc is being released with its nose pointed upwards rather than parallel to the ground. So today on JustDisc, we want to discuss nose angles followed by tips for how you can learn to throw your discs nose down to get more distance.
Therefore, throwing a disc NOSE-UP will get you:
-More control but less distance
-More stability (i.e. more fade)
Throwing a NOSE-DOWN will get you:
-Less control but more distance
-Less stability (i.e. more turn)
Tips to keep that nose angle down to get more distance
1) Avoid Trying To Help The Disc
2) Keep The Wrist Angle Down
3) Follow Through (i.e. shift weight forward)
4) Pull Through Just Below Chest

Probably the most concise definition of "nose down" I've ever heard. Thank you. "Nose down" means "parallel to ground". Is this true with throwing on slopes, whether uphill or down? Great video, new subscriber well-earned!
@JustDisc
@JustDisc 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much John! We love hearing comments like this! ❤ Thanks for subscribing and joining the community 👍 If throwing uphill or downhill, you do have to adjust the nose angle more towards the intended target. Just keep in mind that throwing nose-down downhill makes the disc fly faster and more understandable, and vice versa uphill. Hope this helps!
@dyvel
@dyvel 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily parallel to the ground, no. Whenever you throw you visualize an intended flight path. Imagine that flight path as a piece of string stretching from the position your disc has when you release it to its landing spot. If you extend that string backwards in a smooth line you will end up with a good path for your disc to follow as you throw it. If the nose of your disc, AND the tail of your disc (or really your entire disc) follows exactly along that piece of string as you release it, you're aiming it correctly. If the nose is above that piece of string, or the tail is below it, you have a nose up situation. You can still be aiming too high by visualizing a string pointing to steeply upwards, but as long as your disc points in the direction of your intended flight path it's not a matter of nose up.

I was struggleing with my drives early on this year and decided to make a small change to my grip and it has helped me so much. I used to have a very "standard" powergrip where the rim of the disc would would be snugg right inbetween my thumb and index finger. Then I made a small adjustment so now if you imagine putting your thumb and pinky together, then you follow that crease up and between your middle and index finger, and from there wrap your fingers around the rim. I don't know why but doing this I found it much easier to control my angle...

I only began throwing bh 3 months ago after injuring my elbow over throwing forehands. Went from max 180ft (24.38 m) backhand at the start to yesterday parking at 376 ft (114.6 m) hole. Fix nose angle first, then work on getting your legs and hips through your shot. this is alot like bowling. when i first started i wasnt hitting where i wanted because the ball has hook and if you try and force it, you will get alot more hook and mess up. you have to trust the ball (or disc) to do its thing and that helps you be more consistent with your game. thats what im trying to do with disc golf right now

Honestly, it’s something you just have to accept that you’ll get better with over time (i.e the fine motor skills takes time to develop) 👍 At the same time, you have to remember that releasing the correct nose-angle is a continuous battle that all disc golfers face, even the professionals. Think of it like a golfer trying to shape a shot, or even hit it straight… You don’t always get it perfect, but you can get pretty close!
