Cam, thank you so much. I quit video games last month and it has been an emotional rollercoaster that has affected me on many levels. I have been struggling with re-framing my thoughts and my emotions into positive, useful motivation. The idea of using our emotions and stress as momentum really hits home for me, as well as the idea that the more we resist something the harder it gets and rather to invite it in, accept it, and redirect the energy involved. The past month has consisted of me resisting my urges, trying to avoid triggers and attempting to force a shift in my way of thinking and the things that I'm doing without a sense of direction, without a sense of purpose, without anything to shift it into. I was at a complete loss as to how to find a higher sense of purpose. This video brought a sense of direction towards finding a higher purpose through the questions that you mention: Why did I quit videogames? What am I moving towards? Why am I doing what I am doing? These questions inspired me to answer and direct myself. I expanded these questions a little to address my specific experience which in turn resulted in a renewed sense of higher purpose and motivation. I just wanted to say thank you, Cam, for your support and your insight as well as the inspiration that you are to not only myself but to the entire GameQuitters community. I believe I speak for many of us when I say that all you do is deeply appreciated and I am not sure where I would be today nor that I would have had the strength and conviction to remain steadfast in quitting videogames without GameQuitters.

Hi Cam, It´s good to see that you continuing what you are doing ! Very good points about motivation. Personally I find that it´s easy to lose balance in my life and start to hunt for quick results instead of accepting my gradual progress and enjoying my journey. So I have to constantly remind myself that everything what I have know is presence and that progress takes time. Keep it up !

Tobias Bravstrom Hey Tobias! Thanks for commenting! Pretty cool to see how the channel has come together hey? :) That's a great reminder for yourself. Do you do a gratitude journal? I do this every day and it helps a lot. The main way you do it is by writing down 10 things you're grateful for each day in a journal. This can be anything. It will help keep a positive perspective. The way I do it is every time I eat a meal I take a minute to think of a few things I'm grateful for. Doing this every meal helps me do it more often. :)

Good Idea to do it during a meal. I will try to make it a habit. I use to think before going to sleep about things that I'm grateful that I experienced during the day. Wish you peace and happiness !

Tobias Bravstrom All good ideas! I like to use something like coach.me or chains.cc to track the habits I want to have. It works really well! :)

Hi there, Do you find your concentration and focus and completely diminished as a result of gaming? After years of gaming I find it very difficult to concentrate on anything for more than a couple of minutes before getting distracted or looking for something else to do. I am currently trying to quit gaming for good and to put my energy into getting IT certifications for my job and to help progress my career, but I am struggling to find the motivation to get started, and when I finally do get started I only last a couple of minutes.

danburb0 Hey! Thanks for commenting! Yes, gaming can definitely have this type of affect on you. But one thing I want you to think about is how when you are gaming you *are* able to concentrate for long periods of time. So it's not so much a concentration issue as it is that gaming and other activities have a different *type* of stimulation. When you quit gaming it's not automatically going to be easy to focus on other things, so you will have to work on it. Here are a few recommendations for you: 1) Watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmTCh6ewhLaYpJo 2) Start meditating every day for at least 10 minutes. Go to Headspace.com and do their 10 day, 10 mins/day challenge. Meditation is one of the easiest ways to develop your ability to focus and concentrate. 3) Read this free ebook by Zen Habits: zenhabits.net/focus-book Hope that helps!

Is it ironic that the add before this video on quitting video games was for a video game?
@GameQuitters9 жыл бұрын
scottthewaterwarrior Grrr! That's one thing about KZbin I've been annoyed about is they will show ads about gaming... which is totally counter productive. I've been trying to make sure not to use "gaming" or any tags similar to help this. :( Thanks for sharing btw!

Altho I've quit my major poison (MMOs)...I'm now turning to casual/mobile games to fill the void. But I don't exactly play them in moderation either.. I'm not the type to be able to play anything in moderation.. :(
@GameQuitters9 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Huynh Hey Melissa! Thanks for watching. Remember that you play games for specific reasons (they fulfill certain needs you have), so by removing them you still have those needs. If you're not intentional with how to fill them, you'll go to what you know, which is gaming. So that's why you went from MMOs to mobile games. Read this for more info on what to do: gamequitters.com/how-to-quit-playing-video-games/

+Game Quitters O wow, I didn't think you'd get to commenting back so quickly. Hi, and thanks :) I'm reading thru your article now, pretty insightful. I know what I want to fill my time with, because it's what I'm trying to escape at the same time: studying for a career switch. I'm trying to find motivation to study, but 2 years with a mind-numbing/unchallenging but decently paying job and then coming home to gaming until I pass out.. it was, or still is, a hard cycle to break out of, for me
@GameQuitters9 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Huynh Heya. I definitely relate. So there's two separate problems here. Being able to differentiate them is important to find a solution. The first is procrastinating on doing what you *need* to do (studying for a career switch.) The second revolves around gaming (it's your outlet.) So they both go together but they are different. For instance, you aren't going to be able to replace gaming with studying because you're gaming to avoid studying. I would first address the needs gaming is fulfilling (mostly stress relief and a stimulating activity). Find new ways of achieving those, and then worry about finding some time (I'd recommend watching my video on willpower and procrastination) for systems you can use to get the things you need to get done, done. I'd also recommend reading The Quarter-Life Breakthrough by Adam Poswolsky (he has a TEDx talk as well) which covers the career change topic fairly well.

jeremiah johonoson Hey! Is there a cafe nearby you can go to? I like bringing a book to a cafe and reading it there. That way I'm able to easily interact with a few other people in the cafe, just saying hello and asking them how they are doing. Remember... be the change you want to see in the world. If you want a more social life, you need to be more social yourself. :)
