Game Quitters I like you’re video I just don’t like your dead-end attitude that if you don’t get hired at a place that it’s completely over. That is a really negative attitude and it’s not your fault, I just don’t want you to spread it because of your KZbin influence. It’s also not completely true, I have family members that are stubborn and not hired from certain places for years until they got the job, they got the job; they are not quitters, they are strong 💪 headed , bull headed and stubborn, something which I admit I myself do not have. But, dude, I do want to say that you have helped me. I watch your videos and to know that there are other people like me, it helps, especially under this quarantine thing. I’m playing video games less, and I am doing more things. You’re videos do help and thank you 🙏 for making these videos

I think gaming does make you lazy in other areas of your life. Even if I just watch others play games now I feel demotivated and like I don't want to do anything.

Summary: Why gaming is addictive: -gaming is very structured & creates instant gratification. -gaming is accessible -gaming is a safe place to fail -attachment to virtual identity as real self; less improvement for real life -gaming builds a habit of sitting down, instead of moving around "you are what you repeatedly do" How to improve: -prioritize exercise & movement -work on a goal outside of gaming (gaming creates an instant reward) -game intentionally; only game in certain time period Edit: thank you for the video, it's very informative and helpful. I was thinking about picking it up again after abstaining it for 3 months due to the lack of hobbies, but I think I'm not going to do it.

The safe place to fail can honestly be a good thing too because it teaches people how to accept failure which is often cited by people like gary v. as one of the most important things in life.

I was addicted to videogames for 4 years (10 hours per day) and I replaced it with other screen related stuff. Since I quit any screen related entertainment (It was just 3 days) I feel way more motivated to do other stuff! Currently I don't crave games, and I hope I will continue this for a very long time. Thank you for enlightening me!

I have a long history of problematic gaming, for more than half of my life, actually and I am 25 now. I managed to turn my life around at one point, lose a lot of weight, become a father etc and during that time I really learned how experienced all of these points you made in the video. You are giving great tips, you are doing very, very important work and I respect you. Your videos have helped me a lot and given me the courage to quit gaming again after relapsing very badly for over a year after a divorce. I can - not-play in moderation, I just start to crave more and more, rather in a similar fashilon as you once explained about yourself in a video in which you described your WoW gaming, which I played too btw, so quitting is the only thing that has worked for me. I am really looking forward to seeing all the good things that I can make with my life again and I'd love to share some thought with you about how to possibly help people addicted to video games at some point. :)

I'm a video game junky trying my best to kick a 40 year old habit. I have not played video games for 3 months, but today was a hard day. I just wanted to spend the day gaming, but I knew I would hate myself afterwards if I did play. So I clicked on your video for a little bit of gaming detox, and it worked. I haven’t had a heavy gaming addiction, I used to only play up to about 8 hours a day. Today, I have cut it down to about 1 or 2. My past fascination with gaming has led me to pursue a career in Information Technology, Because from gaming, I have developed a high interest in computers. I will be attending college in the fall to pursue a degree in IT

First, let me say that I love watching your videos. You present the information in a clear, concise way without being patronizing and I appreciate that. I do have a gaming addiction and I have sought out therapy as a result. People laughed at me when I told them I was addicted to gaming and it would make me sad and ashamed. People understand (and even empathize) with physically detrimental addictions such as drugs or alcohol, but when it comes to gaming they just don't take it seriously. But there was no denying that I felt like I had no control over my gaming habits. It was the same feeling that I had when I was trying to quit smoking. I would go to sleep with the determination that I would wake up and be a non-smoker. Then the next day, there was an invisible rope that pulled me to the store to buy more cigs..and I would cry every time because I HATED that force. I would be so disappointed in myself and I hated myself for not being stronger. Tbh, I think a gaming addiction is worse than drugs or alcohol in some ways. Of course, the latter impacts ones health more profoundly. However, the psychological 'dangling carrot' is used by gaming industries to lure (and keep) gamer's focus... And it's a powerful pull. There is one thing that I haven't seen being mentioned in your videos. That something is self fulfilling prophecy. "A self-fulfilling prophecy is the sociopsychological phenomenon of someone "predicting" or expecting something, and this "prediction" or expectation coming true simply because the person believes it will, and the person's resulting behaviors aligning to fulfill the belief". (from Wiki). The more I try to quit, the more I fail. Therefore, I must be a failure and have no control over my actions. Therefore, I game more because I am destined to be a failure in real life. This is the mentality that keeps me in the addiction loop. (and keeps me lazy). Nuff said - my rant is over. ps. I've been a non-smoker for 11 months now :)

On the other side my partner plays games constantly- he gets home from work and starts playing almost immediately- he plays all weekend- he ignores me and gets annoyed when I ask him to spend time with me. He also drinks bottles of wine while gaming. He says he needs to do all this to relax but this behaviour is the root cause of all the strife in his life- lack of motivation, interest in anything, sleep problems, weight and health issues, boredom... I have left him before then he promises to change. A few weeks go by then the pattern starts again. I am fed up of it and want to smash his computer. He will not accept there is a problem though. 😔

5 Reasons Gaming Makes You Lazy 1: Warped perception of effort 2: Accessible and convenient 3: Safe place to fail 4: Virtual identity attachment 5: Sedentary Lifestyle
@DurkDiggler
@DurkDiggler 4 жыл бұрын
Gaming doesn’t create laziness, laziness manifests through gaming for some, and for others it’s films and reading. many things in life keep us sitting still, every office job makes you lazy if you LET it make you that way. I game almost every night for 1-3 hours because my brother and I play together. he left the house when i was in 7th grade to join the marines after high school which landed him in california for all 4 years of service and another 3 once he got out and found an apartment. we talked far less and it felt like my brother was a stranger for several years until he got an xbox one, from then on we have been able to talk everyday to tell each other what’s going on in our lives and to joke around and talk about growing up and the goofy times we had. BUT, whilst playing every night, I have picked up street skateboarding as a near daily hobby as well as poker(micro-stakes of course) and earned my associates degree while also recently getting accepted into university to earn my bachelors in CJ and Criminology. so no i don’t think gaming makes you lazy, i think lazy people are attracted to video games as a way to feel accomplished without any physical exertion. id even say gaming has helped me understand why time management and discipline is so crucial in life, when you have 3-4 things in your life that you love to do above all else it forces you to learn how to appropriately manage how your day is spent

I agree with you, for me I try to develop my habit like to do chores in house first before playing, there's also a book on my table, I'm supposed to read one page before I turn on my gaming laptop. I also try playing video games as a learning tool for improving my English

I think it’s because it became his life, for most people it’s a side hobby. But nope this guy can’t control himself. I also have the same problem sometimes. I can keep a job and go to school but I end up staying up late or I trade social interactions for a screen. All work no play is terrible just make sure your not in a basement with no life or friends sitting on Xbox all day. I’m not addicted but I am going to put them down so I can focus on getting better social skills.

At the end of your life, you tend to remember those things which were most meaningful and real. This means it's possible for gamers to find themselves old and immobile one day with no memories to carry them through those later years. They won't be able to say, "I did X and Y and then Z was crazy and then..." It might just be, "I gamed most of my life and a few interesting things happened but they were things that happened TO me, not goals I achieved. My life has been meaningless."

After not having gamed for nearly a decade and then buying parts to build a gaming PC out of excitement to try games again, I now find myself making excuses to game for around 8 hours a day to skip on other parts of my life to a point that I'd feel irritated to do anything else besides game on my PC and although I am constantly aware of this setback I feel uncertain of letting go of gaming despite the fact that before i go to bed, i always think to myself how much time i wasted on something so physically unrewarding and what i could have done instead. I'm ready to drop it all but still deal with hesitation.

Have you ever found people who are putting the same amount of time into other hobbies? I'm talking 6-12 hours a day on a passion that isn't gaming and how different are the results? For me personally, I spend around that amount of time everyday to go skate and learn new tricks if its sunny, and its definitely been affecting my motivation for school and making me lazy as well. Everything else just feels sooo boring, and its like I've completed replaced my gaming addiction with skateboarding now over the last few years.
@GameQuitters

I find most people end up spending a couple hours/day on other hobbies but they have multiple hobbies instead. Skateboarding is definitely a good one to replace it. For me music does not but it's more of a couple hours/day instead of 6-12. My own business takes up more 6-12 hours/day though and I'm pretty passionate about it.

Thank you for this video. Lately I have felt sucked into this sort of vortex where I dont have energy to do much but its very easy for me to load up a game. I easily get attached to things like mmo's given that they give a clear pathway to progression. Recently I went back to Final Fantasy 14 and I realized that I wanted to grind just to grind. To get all my classes to max level, etc. I dont think gaming inherently is problematic, though there are plenty of devs out there creating games that are psychologically addicting or play at our basic instincts. I have reached this point where I feel tired of letting the things I want to accomplish irl melt away because its so easy, so guaranteed to progress in a video game.

I think a lot of people just don't have self control(myself included for a while) which leads to lack of motivation to do stuff outside games. If you are trying to become an esports pro, remember, that's the one percent and you need a backup plan. There is quite a few esports players that still managed to keep good grades and studies while practicing. Also, look at other career fields. The thing that has really helped me was finding something I am passionate about. Don't try to be motivated by going into a career that bores you like investement banking. Look at the fun stuff that is still liveable like army aviation, translation, hardware engineer, cyber sec. Once you find a career that is outside gaming you will end up wanting to spend more time focused outside gaming, but that doesn't mean you have to end your hobby completely.

Thanks Cam, my issue is that I find myself thinking about gaming and find it hard to control myself because I know what I am doing is unproductive and not in line with my life goals. But I keep wanting to play games and when I do I feel guilty, so I don’t even get any enjoyment out of it. I Limit myself to 2hrs a day of playtime but even that seems be too much and i ‘crash’ after I’ve played and just generally feel like shit/demotivated afterwards. I’m trying to find a balance where I can game for 1-2hrs a day and not feel guilty for it, but I can’t, I always end up feeling like I’ve just wasted my time. And the crash I get after gaming sucks any further motivation I had to do anything productive afterwards. I’m just wondering whether anyone feels the same and has managed to find a schedule or routine that actually allows them to game from time to time and also lead a healthy and happy life...

I love your motivational videos, checking them frequently. I stopped gaming for 1 years completely, it just bored me. But still nothing happened in my life, so I returned. I know it depends on me what happens in my life, but nothing worked. I'm not an outgoing person, and the worst thing I dont have too many common topics with anyone. I tried to go to social events with my housemate, who has lot of friends there. They didnt even talk to me, and if I go to them, they left me after 2 sentences ( it's my biggest fear to start conversation, because the previous happens every time). Conversation goes boring, and they leave... so I cant improve in communication, even if I try. I know you can say "Oh find an another group they were rude", but since it's happening everywhere, I had to admit I must be boring. When people ask to tell a funny or exciting story, I have nothing to tell, because I never did exciting things. I sometimes help in ministries for my relatives, so I can meet a few new people. But these are only one-time events, so again we never meet with those people again... I'm ghosted since my childhood, and I'm almost 30 now. Never had friends, and now everyone is married / having their friends from years ago to have fun with. I again started to gaming, but I dont enjoy it now, I just play to spend time. I really try to improve my social skills, but it just getting worse every time, and I hate going among people. Well, that's my story, thank you for reading! :)

I sadly learnt that I have ADHD, which explains a lot why I was addicted to gaming, why I am constantly searching for hyperstimuli to replace gaming with. I was actually diagnosed with ADHD when I was 14 but we didn't take it serious because I was very good at school and sports. And of course my mother's first reaction was "He can play video games for hours without blinking, how can he have ADHD"? :) Is here anyone like me? Constantly losing items, forgetting bag in the bus, get late for appointments? :) I do know that gaming makes those symptoms a lot worse but it was same when I wasnt gaming either :)

Hey mate, look I was wondering if you could help me with my situation. I used to play heaps of PS4 and kept good grades and had a good social life etc, but I just wasn’t nice to my family and became quite short with ppl. My parents told my brothers and I that we can only play on the weekends which meant that I played only around 8 hours a week. While this worked fine and I was happy with it, It meant that I used my weekends for gaming and not for being with friends and family. 2 weeks ago I sold my PS4 to someone across the country who was in lockdown. I got good money for it and everything and I deleted all the games off my phone and on my laptop and stuff. I’ve just gotten a high paying job (I’m 15->16) and now I’m considering getting a Gaming PC. I was wondering given my situation if I should buy that PC or should I move on from gaming and save up for a car or block of land. Thanks, btw for all the videos they have helped heaps :)

I mean, all of the points showed can be really variable and not always atributed to gaming. I played games all my life and not regret any second of it, have a passion for music and game development/programming, i literally finished 40 guides that teachers sent me on quarantine within 2 months! So its kinda complicated to just blame it on gaming. Also, will you make a video about the 2 posts that online casino "research" made of? Very interesting to see your view on that. Cheers ;)

For me it isnt as much as lazy but unorganised because playing video games like 99% people lose track of time
@GameQuitters
@GameQuitters 4 жыл бұрын
Unorganized is a good point. The “losing track of time” is about flow state. The hyper stimulation and immersion is what makes you lose track of time. I get the same flow state in DJing. 👀

I'm trying to quit gaming. So far I've been doing well though I relapse at times. lately, games haven't been that fun and I can't play for longer than a few minutes without feeling like I'm wasting my time... However, all the free time I have from not gaming has been going towards watching educational content on YT and practicing my martial arts. I'll be checking out your other videos and I've subscribed.

What can I do if I am am one click away from redownloading the game on my phone. I uninstall but just have a 5 minute craving that I give in to and I play the mobile game for a bit and get into it and forget about ever trying to give up. This loop has repeated multiple times. Have you got any tips? Thanks

A very unrelated irrelevant comment. I am a sim racer and play it for (on average) 1 hour a day. I wished to become a racer or being able to drive all these cool cars. But since I am not exactly that rich, I play it. Do you think I should quit it?

It is so true that gaming is just so much easier than life because well let's face it life his hard and requires hardship instead of gaming which is just so much essayer. I have too many time did the easiest choice rather the harder choice. A wise man said "The hard thing to do is usally the right thing to do."

the different strategy is to consider a much more limited amount of gaming - not every day, try different games, etc. I have a ton of videos on my channel on how to stop gaming so much.

I think that gaming can take a huge amount of time in your life and make you lazy BUT unless you make a living out of gaming , it wont help you to pay the bills and other expenses. There are people who love working in the gaming industry and there others who don't . If you don't want to work in that industry, then playing many hours is not a good idea .

Ways to fuck your life up over gaming 1. Play 10-24 hours worth 2. Neglect people 3. Not engage in real life activities like clubs and sports 4. Be unhealthy and drink soda. (Think about the South Park fat guy who is addicted to gaming) 5. Please do not find South Park gaming episodes influencial. The directors of that show are actually evil people. I "loved" that show for a long time.

@GameQuitters Cam, your videos have a lot of content. I am watching your videos everyday and since i have trouble gaming in moderation, have gone cold turkey and working on my c# application. For entertainment, i am watching movies and anime series { Death Note is Awesome }. I personally feel Games don't have a real life goal and they increase procrastination where even a routine daily walk and exercise feels to be forcibly done. And psychological effects like guilt, depression,laziness, boredom, Anxiety in real world during and after gaming session are very much noticable. And the human brain will have a hard time distinguishing between real world and virtual world which is the reason why i abstained from all video games. Thank You Cam Adair, Suhas Parampalli
