I believe the desire to play video is not only to escape reality but also the need to be constantly stimulated by everything. We are so addicted to any sort of stimulation (video games, phone, internet, tv, clickbait, shitty food) that we lose touch with the things that really matter. It's saddening to the core if you really think about it. Try meditation for just 20 minutes. Those first 20 minutes will seem like the longest 20 minutes of your life. But in that moment is where your true authenticity lies. You just being present in the moment without any bullshit brain candy.

@@WillMcGuire hey you are welcome, but please do not be afraid to seek social help for the going through part, it is really tough to get through it by our own will especially if it has become a habit. Like when I feel like I am getting addicted to my phone a lot, I ask my mother to hide it from me for the time in which I am supposed to do work, that helps a lot. Another important thing is to develop a routine and sticking to it, that is the foundation of the whole process. What I do when I feel like my routine is falling apart, is make a list of things to do and give it to my mother, then when the day ends, I tell her honestly what I managed to get done and what I didn't, and it's okay if you only get 10 percent done of what you wanted to do, the important thing is you get 11 percent done the next day and so on. Let your friends know that you won't be playing for a while, or delete the discord or whatever, peer pressure to play the game is really strong and you need to find a way to remove that. Hope this helps

Quick backstory: I used to play 8-10 hours a day everyday, feeling bad about not getting anything else done. Now its a year later, and I have learned how to stay away. For me what i needed was to get something else to spend my time on. Now I have developed a few new habits, such as fitness, coding, reading and learning business, but I still have something keeping me awake some nights. I keep wanting to go back to those days when i sat on a discord call with all my friends, playing our favourite game until late at night. Its the memories that makes me so nostalgic, and it honestly saddens me that i really dont have the time anymore. I dont want to forget, but i need to move on. Its just hard, really hard.

My only escape was a video game. And I constantly just wanted to play games, I felt like I could be something more. I was playing all nighters way past the time my friends went to bed. And I would wake up to fatigue and depression. Did just enough to get by. I spent 4 years doing the same cycle and wasting time, I got so angry because I wasn't anything successful. I quit when I realized there's more to life, and many more rewards than just ranking up, or unlocking new gear. We all have a future to live, and the fact that we are alive is a blessing. Dont distract yourself with games that do nothing for you in the long run. Think outside the box, and remember that you are an opportunity of faith if you believe in yourself.

2 reasons why I play games but I try to do change is that my mental health is very bad, I have suicidal thoughts, overthought contemplations to the point where I have a mental breakdown and if I go to video games to distract me from my mental health it just makes it worse because I realise that I’m wasting my life. Secondly I have a hypocritical father figure in my family that ruins my life and is the main cause of my mental breakdowns which I have a mild to severe depression.

Get a 12 hours everyday job. That will get you to quit gaming. lol Seriously though, I've drastically cut down my gaming time almost completely. All thanks to my job. I love my job too. I work at a beautiful golf course and I also work on cutting grass on the side with my dad's business. So it's double the money for me. I work really early in the morning, so I wake up around 6am and come back home at 5,6, or 7 pm. Depending on how much work we have. I do have time for myself mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. Those are pretty much my days off. I go to the gym, go for a run, and still have time to do other things that I need to do throughout the day, even when my job has me moving all day. It helps me to sleep early and well for the next day at work. Looking back at gaming, I look at my old self and I've realized that gaming is a huge mistake. All those hours I spend a day on games, just horrible. I could've been working out, learning to play an instrument, or in my case, kept practicing on my guitar and piano, but I decided on games. Now, I'm pretty much free of gaming for good.

How to overcome a video game addiction, explained in 20 seconds rather than ~6 minutes like this video: 1. Have some fucking discipline. 2. Have a friend or parents take away your computer/games for 2-3 weeks. 3. Cold turkey; spend your time doing things that are actually productive to your personal growth, and wholesome recreation. 4. Congratulations, you've sobered up. 5. After 2-3 weeks, you've gotten over your addiction. It's not like alcoholism or real drug addiction, it's much easier to break. 6. If you got addicted again, repeat steps 1-5. (From a repeat-addiction gamer. This shit works.)

You could go cold turkey - uninstall your games, sell your shit etc. Or you could break the problem down into little bits, and look for solutions step by step. Write down 5 negative emotions you get from playing e.g frustration, guilt, etc.. 5 reasons why you must quit e.g. not getting shit done, no girlfriend or friends etc... THEN... think of 5 positive things you get from playing e.g. excitement, community, pleasure in problem solving, etc. NOW find alternative activities that can give you the same highs, but ones that dont come with the negative emotions. E.g. sport, art, chess, socialising, inventing, creating, learning, cooking, making $, making your life better, making the world better, travelling, playing with dogs etc....

people often chose to study by themselves for computer certs, i think this is a mistake. consider going to a community/tech school. Or find someone studying the same thing. you don't have to do this, but i think group activities help. i plan to go to school and become a networking tech(cicso routing+switching) ;)

Thanks for the high quality videos and advice, Richard. I had clocked in 6,000+ hours in WoW and a comparable amount across a host of other games, and I realized a few months ago that I should stop. I find that books are a good way to keep me away from video games, in that each one is a new experience and they don't rely so much on grinding and repetition. I think the key is to also find a hobby or an activity where you can create and practice to the point where you don't want to play video games because it deters from something more worthwhile.

His routine works really good. The problem with video game addiction is you come home and say "ok just an hour of video games" and it takes up your day. With his plan he's making himself work before video games. This makes sure he'll have the work done, still get to play and the work won't feel as boring because of the reward at the end. I too have been doing this and it really is the best way to stop.

Great video Richard! a lot of great advice in here, I'm a former hardcore gamer who played way to much for my own good, Nowadays I'm back on track attacking my ambitions and goals in life, I don't have the same feelings towards gaming like I use to have, the weight of gaming was huge before, nowadays non-existant, today games and entertainment is no longer the same for me, I still game from time to time, but everything outside of entertainment/games is so much more appealing to me. This is possible for everyone, there are no shortcuts here, but if we are thinking about what we could, for example, accomplish with all that time we could free up, this is a great indicator that something inside you is trying to communicate with you that this is something you should take action on. if I had to explain the feeling from where I started to were I'm at today, I feel free. with that said take action on your future self and execute, you're your own creator, let us go create something beautiful. Best regards Niklas at RGCM

You have changed my life. I am going to try this because my parents say that I am addicted. I usually do this to play with my friends who live 30 minutes away because I live far from my school. I love soccer, guitar, drumming, and I need to communicate more. I don't know how much I can thank you. I will start with a 3 hour per day limit on school days and weekends will be 4 hours. I suggest that people try this and gradually lower the amount of time per day. Thank you so much man!

Hey, so I've been playing video games for 6 years now, and even before I was playing video games I was always a competitive person, I have an older brother and sister, and I always done my best to outdo my older brother in everything he did including accomplishments/skills, which I was really able to do for a long time until gaming came into my life. I truly do believe I am addicted or rather was addicted to video games, or more specifically FPS games like Counter Strike. I would play the game nonstop day on end every day of my life as long as I had my computer with me. It would get to the point I would even skip meals just to finish a competitive match or to rank up. I've realized that I had a problem, and recently I've decided to quit gaming completely. Casually gaming on the side is simply not possible for me, its an all-or-nothing thing for me. So I decided to leave it to focus on school, but my main problem is, school isn't hard for me, especially for my age group even though I'm an honors student. The problem is, I know I'm going to have a lot of free-time after completing my work, and its not an exaggeration, I mean a lot of free-time. Before competitive FPS gaming really took over my life, it was just something I'd play at night time when all my friends had to leave and couldn't hang out any later, and eventually came onto me and controlled each day. With my position, what should I be doing with all the free-time? If I try to casually game, I'll just get pulled into it again, and I just recently moved to where I live now, so I have no friends from when I was younger. I'm not particularly the most athletic or charismatic compared to how I used to be, so now I really don't see what else I could be doing with my life. Any suggestions/help?

My friends sister is so addicted. She only comes out of her room to get food to bring it to her room. She can't realize that the world isn't a video game. When they went to the beach she brought her computer and didn't swim or go on the beach she just stayed at the hotel and played minecraft. When she gets grounded from it she pretends like she will pass out. If she watches a movie she has to be also playing on her iPad. Once she got mad at her mom and threw her little sisters headphones and broke a pair of 75$ headphones.

As videogame addict I find that 12 step programs do help a lot, I invite you to research them, and also other ways of overcoming an addiction, In my case I'm following the steps, and I discover I usually can't deal with stress, and academic failure so I hide and get lost on videogames. Keep the good work.

I am a huge gamer myself, but I believe "quitting" is not completely a solution for most people to overcome gaming addiction. It's just a matter of putting everything on a different perspective. It's a matter of turning something you love, into something worthwhile to do, and in the long run, productive to do. This might be a long shot but I don't have to quit video games, I just have to make video games as a medium to enhance things that I love, which is creating stories, specifically film making. I realized I am not into "competitive" types of games but more on games that has very interesting narratives and story driven gameplay, like RPGs. In turn, I turned to those games to inspirations for scenes, themes and dialogues that I can incorporate through my works. I got inspiration on how to write and filming a post-apocalyptic genre thru Fallout, medieval times with Dark Souls and Elder Scrolls, fantasy with the Final Fantasy series, quirky but emotional themes from Undertale and Earthbound/Mother series and so on. I also realized that I devised a simple way not to get addicted. I play games that has a clear "end". Once I "cleared" it, I uninstall/remove it. Probably the only games I had that has competitive gameplay is fighting games. I find the types of games nowadays, especially the online ones, kinda tiring to play because it has no clear end goal. There's no reason to stop, because some games themselves want you to play them forever. They were designed to make you never quit. Most of the game reviewers I watch nowadays, especially The Completionist, turned what they love into a full time job, not because they're "addicted", but because they turned their "addiction" into something productive. The problem with most games nowadays is not from the games itself, but those who play it really. There's nothing wrong with quitting. But people are dreadful of hearing that idea, that's why they're having a hard time to stop.

I think what you say is true Richard. We addicts need to regain control of our life. I just wanna take a moment to share my own experience or my real situation right now. I've played videogames since I was about 8 years old. Now I'm 19 (almost 20) and I still play videogames. Throughout the years of my life I've had this thought (I saw it more as a fear) that maybe I had been developing or I would develop an addiction towards playing videogames at some point in my life. I too had thought that I was just using videogames to escape my own troubles but I never had the courage to admit it and now I see that I should have taken the time to feel my emotions and move on. However, sometimes I feel like letting myself feel or thinking too much puts me in a bad mood and that's why I just turn back to videogames again, right after I have recovered. Honestly I just feel lost, I have nothing to fill up the emptiness in my life. I don't know what my life would have been all this time without videogames. When I grew up I let videogames cover up the space for friends, for goals and for happiness. Now I just feel scared to try something new and to abandon my comfort zone. I'm beginning to try and hang out with people I met at college but it just seems so much harder to make friends in the real world in contrast to the online world, it's like I'm never going to achieve it. I can honestly tell I've had better and definitely more honest friends online than the arrogant, closed-minded, false-smiling people I see everyday at my faculty. It makes me anxious to walk around saying hi to someone and asking how they feel already knowing that the answer will always be the same "I'm fine". Why can't people trust each other in the real world? Why can't we express when we're tired or sad or feeling awkward? Why don't people talk about things to work them out when they get mad? Why does everybody seem to choose to ignore and forget what/who troubles them before forgiving and remembering the good times/things? Is it just something about our generation or the youth? I think this transcends my own addiction. It's just that the world feels wrong man... #That'swhyIplay Hopefully with time, change will come. I'm trying to be as positive as I can. Thanks for the video.
