Hi Brian, lots of good points. I’ve been in the business for 30 plus years. I’m in a small market...(population). What I’ve found out... do what your competition doesn’t want to do... edging of curbs/sidewalks. Make your properties stand out from your competitors. It’s not that hard to do. Work around your clients hours of operation. That may require you to work in the evenings and or on weekends. Remember people... were in the “service” business.

I'm a small lawn service owner that's just getting started this year. I have tried calling many real estate companies to inquire about maintenance of their commercial properties/ lots until they are sold. I have submitted my application via email like they asked me to but I keep running into flat out rejection, being told that they have someone who does the work even though the grass is a foot tall every day I drive by there, or not even receiving a call back. Any suggestions?

But how much do you charge? Per acre of your weedwacking, edging and blowing and mowing weekly?
@BriansLawnMaintenance Жыл бұрын
$80-$120 an acre. Just depends how complex the lawn is, and how much trimming and edging versus pure mowing.
@thisoldrelic2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for putting this out. This is a great video. Especially when you talk about the pros and cons. So, many landscapers going after the holy grail of commercial and just avoid residential. I would rather have a whole block of residential driveways then have the one commercial I have. Dealing with a condo complex that doesn't want salt because of the cost but then gets upset when plowing doesn't bring out the bare asphalt in 0 degree tempratures. Mowing went well with them.

Amen to that.

Great tips brother! Separating from the navy in 6 months and looking to start my own lawn business. I’ll have about 15-20k to start. What would you recommend I buy. Already have a truck
@gto2000five2 жыл бұрын
I just retired from the Navy back in December but started my business January of last year. Best thing you can do is get yourself a reliable commercial grade string trimmer, edger, and blower with a 36 inch stand on mower. Your quality, speed, and reliability improve with the commercial equipment. And the 36 inch will fit in almost every single back yard. Get the bigger mower last if at all while starting out. You can always mow a large property with a small mower but not always a small property with a large mower. Lastly, get yourself a few shirts with your logo on them and a sign on your trailer, enclosed or open doesn't matter. The visibility alone has brought me thousands in business including one commercial account that alone is a majority of my 6 figure business.
@michoosadventures8266 Жыл бұрын
I disagree with what they are saying I would start out basic by buying a thousand dollar trailer at tractor supply and then start with a 42’ or a 48’ mower and don’t spend more than 5k and then buy Stihl or echo blowers and string trimmers to start
@theehgroup70062 жыл бұрын
Ive got several commercial accounts. They are all good. They are small business. Bidding one now but my gut is telling me they are shopping price and not looking for a lasting partnership
@BriansLawnMaintenance2 жыл бұрын
I always as bluntly, are you looking to compare quotes, or are you looking for a long-term partnership. If they get skittish and say "oh no, we're shopping quotes but COULD be looking for something long term", that's automatic just toss them a high number and who cares what happens. 80% chance you're not getting it anyways, so bid it with a 30% premium if you do get it, you're pumped. Lol. Just real talk.

Ouch, I know you're pricing per man hour for 2019, but I cant get anyone to come to work for less than $20 to $25 an hour. That leaves less than $10 per hour profit after paying for everything. This is probably why I don't get commercial accounts as I have been pricing them at $75 per man hour the last couple of years and this year I am planning on $80.
@BriansLawnMaintenance2 жыл бұрын
Those were circa 2018 stats. Today it’s well north of $65-$85 an hour for anyone with a brain cell.
