In this Monday morning tennis rant, I explain how to get out of a tennis slump using Felix Auger-Aliassime as an example, who won Basel after losing many matches consecutively.

I'm so glad that you are bringing up FAA on this Monday rant. I for one, never doubted his ability to come back, for me, it was only a matter of when. Felix has a tremendous amount of determination. He's a shy guy but he works relentlessly on improving and maintaining his abilities. This aspect of his training is what brought him very high in the rankings before his injury and although he suffered some major upsets this year, his discipline has payed up big time in Basel. You can bet that we will see a lot more of him on the circuit next year. No doubt about it.

I mean look how hard it is for Thiem. Coming back from injury isn’t easy.

It started with a knee injury he had around Miami time or start of the clay court season, and went on from there. Injuries can be a catalyst for a slump at the pro level.

its actually so true tennis players lose matches consistently ... compared to other sports especially team sports in a league format where you lose less and less frequently. Someone who plays futures and is competitive is not going to win every tournament but once they start winning consistently they play challengers and start losing again. Only till you reach the top 2-5 players in the world you start winning consistently but you still lose here and there

This video is totally right. During the summer I was on a 32 match losing streak over two months. But after playing some of my worst tennis and just accepting it, grind grind grind and that win came. If anyone else is on a losing stump just keep at it, don't play weaker players, play your level or better and you will win that unwinnable match eventually, your confidence will come even at a slow pace like it was for me. I'm sure it will happen again at some point but keep that tennis grind on boys!

Thoughts about FAA and Casper Ruuds season overall? Both have had quite subpar seasons, considering they have been staple top 10 players last seasons. Ruud has won one ATP250 (Clay-Estoril) and reached the final at Roland Garros. FAA now won/defended Basel ATP500.

I think Ruud's season is a normal low after such consistent performance past 2 years. Yeah also impacted by confidence, he was very reactive, upset, the other day I watched one of his last matches. Lets see if he rebounds next year!

@@elchanclascocina Yeah, it's been a reocurring theme for him this year. Been very upset in general while playing. For a guy who has never trashed a racket he has been fairly close doing so this year. When he lost to Struff in Monte Carlo that racket was very close to being destroyed. Hope he gets rid of some of that anger/frustration and bounces back next season.

Note also Felix's physical issues. Was forced to skip some tournaments and retire from some others. A knee and a shoulder issue as well as some illness. Not being okay physically will also directly impact your confidence, that is weaken your belief in yourself and your current capabilities. And subsequently also indirectly through the poor results that follow.

Funny you mentioned confidence and what it actually means. Confidence actually translates to "with faith".

The loss to Mannarino was the most painful match I've ever watched. It felt as if he preferred the fans to leave rather than witness a shankfest.

The concept of “deserving” a ranking is stupid IMO. Who atm doesn’t deserve being in the top 10? So a lower ranked player doesn’t deserve having a higher rating. They have potential to climb the rankings.

I don’t like people using the term “ slump”. It’s just your baseline level creeping up for a prolonged time more than usual. That’s it. It’s your true level.
