Great advice. I did full Ironman Chattanooga in September and it took 5 weeks to recover, resume full training, reset goals, etc. Not having that daily rush of training is difficult, but give yourself some grace and you’ll be back into it soon enough!😃

One thing i learned in the past is not to let my whole identity be consumed by triathlon. Rather than tell myself that "I'm a triathlete" and consume my social media about all things (too much) triathlon, I've reversed that into "I'm a dad who does triathlon. " i think it puts some perspective on what/who really matters and it's easy to let go of the race once it's done.

Great choice! Delmo does put on a great event! Done it 2x but not this year due to injury. First time 87 and humid, second time 70 and raining. Be ready for anything! If it’s sunny, there is NO shade at all in the boardwalk run. Can’t wait to see how you go!

Well said Mr.Taren! I used to get this feeling during my training blocks! When my coach delay my next training block for couple of days, I will be in a really bad mood. However, I really felt it after doing my first olympic triathlon in my life. After the race I was destroyed mentally and physically. Thanks again for another great video👌✌

Yep - keep up the goals, keep aiming for new things, and post race depression is less likely to happen! If you need to take up a new sport just to give you a new goal (i.e. during winter), then do so!

I liked the editing of this video. The throwing in training clips to avoid "talking head" syndrome worked really well at "breaking" up the video. Thanks for the amazing content.

Good vid. Good topic. A big part of the depression comes from the transient nature of the event itself. When you look back, there's nothing there. No race village. No crowds. "It was there a couple of days ago. What happened?" IRONMAN has capitalized on that psychology very well to entice people to sign up for more races. More power to them, I say. I'm ready for another rock star finish line feeling. Thanks, Taren for another perspective on our sport.

AC is a great choice. I’ve done this race 3x and can concur that Stephen Delmonte puts on phenomenal race. One of the most passionate directors I’ve come across and really cares about the overall experience of the athletes. The bike course can be a little congested after the first loop, but is otherwise pretty fast. You’ll love the race. Don’t be surprised if you have a PB.

The only way I could imagine being depressed after a race is if I DNF or didn't put it all out there. That's why you go out and don't give in or give up. The other adjustment might be getting older, say 40+ and you're no longer setting new PR/PB. Figuring out the new realistic goal could be a challenge.

There has to be something to be said about the way that most people go crazy/off the rails with junk food in the day(s) following a race after presumably eating better during all of the training blocks and race lead up as well - talk about a shock to the system/hormones

As someone who competes regularly in long distance sport, I have trouble finding this “diagnosis” legitimate. Retiring from a gold medal career is one thing ... finishing (or DNF) a race and now depressed? Not so sure. Be grateful for a healthy body, the ability to swim bike and run, and check yourself about why you’re so “depressed”. Just like happiness, discipline and personal aim comes from within. If you are TRULY down, it may be time to re-evaluate life’s priorities because you’ve likely gone too far

Bolton is my local IM and was my first this year and now the most difficult bike in the IM series.... locally there is a lot of banta hay 2018 was not a full IM due to the bike being cut short due to the fires..... Philip Green I think the problem with Bolton is that its more of an endurance event compared to other flatter and sunnier races.... I’ve sent him a note suggesting he does a feature on IM UK now it is the toughest IM due to the bike.... would love to see the Pros return because it’s an awesome event it probably difficult to train for due to the bike being so hilly and technical.... lets see if TT is up for it
