Rip, back off sets are in the grey book and the person who authored that portion describes the lifter being able to do one “Herculean” effort of a set of 5 followed be two back off sets of 5. It is in an example workout for an LP by a former division I athlete. So i guess the great mystery is solved? Love starting strength and practical programming.

The one factor is bone structure (Length)and bone density. If you look at Mike Mentzer and Frank zane, both men are around the same height. Mike has the ability to hold more muscle because he has thicker bones. Because of this he can handle heavier weights. Zane was no slouch when it comes to strength. I'm gonna be honest, I have long ass resting between my presses too. I used to do just the 3 min prescribed rest, but it just didn't work for me when I hit a 155+ press. I would just get reps like 5, 2, 1 I switched to resting 5 minutes in between my press sets, and I immediately started getting 5, 5, 5 again. I just don't recover enough in 3 minutes.
@Mantorok12
@Mantorok12 Жыл бұрын
@@user-tz9jh6pv2j I would suggest you're hitting a point of diminishing returns in the linear progression. 3x5 with more weight is progress, but not strictly so if you need far more rest to accomplish it. If you can do 3x5xX with 4 minutes of rest, but 3x5x(X+5) takes 5 minutes of rest, those aren't the same conditions. That is regression rather than progression. Strength is a matter of intensity (weight), volume (reps), and work capacity (endurance). I would recommend looking for a periodization program, that goes from high volume with moderate intensity down to low volume with high intensity. Also do some cardio. 20 minutes on the treadmill with enough Incline to keep your heart rate up, you don't have to go fast.
@SamuelTitus-cz3fu

It's not complicted but you need to know what your weakness is. If it's triceps, do some pin pressing an inch above your head or include some isolation tricep work. If its your front delt include some db front raises at the end of the workout or seated db presses to stress the font delt without being limited by other potentially weak muscle groups. If it's your core, you can try some db windmills or one arm db presses for 8-10 reps or do some push presses and concentrate on slowly lowering the bar (5-8 secs) If a muscle is lagging you need to train outside of your main lift or change the lift varion at least.

@John Scott “gain 10lbs as fast as you can.” Even rip knows the amount of time it would take to increase his press is way less than the months it would take to build 10 lbs of muscle. 95% of the weight will be fat (and that’s on the low side). The guy is already 200 lbs + with novice numbers at 5 foot 9 with novice numbers. The guy is already fat. He needs an intermediate program and to leave SS behind as his true novice gains are over. The issue is programming not the guy being underweight.

I just want to make a point about failure with presses. Being that it is fairly technical, I know it would be tempting to reset the weight if you fail a rep. I am a returning novice running the progression again until I make up for what I lost (I was laid off training for medical reasons). Today I was doing my 3 sets. On set one I failed the 4th rep. I took a longer break, probably 8-10 minutes, and then hit the other two sets for 5s. The last reps were probably 3 or 4 seconds. Then I hit a double to get all my volume in. This lift is very technical. Your body might tell you that it wants nothing to do with that weight even though you did a couple pounds less than that just 5 days ago. This is not like the other lifts. If you fail it does not necessarily mean you can't do it if you try again.

I'm a huge fan of starting strength and Rip. But this answer really annoys me when it seems to be the Only answer, is gain more weight. I'm not afraid of getting fat, and I personally want to get bigger. But he's always saying how strength training is for everyone, but what of you compete in a sport with weight classes and its not powerlifting? If your competing in MMA and you're stalling, is the answer to just keep moving up in weight classes? Come on.

Somewhere between 80% of your 1 Rep max. That leaves a few reps in reserve for set 1, maybe 1 or 2 reps for set 2 and the third set the 5s are your max.

An important part of bench pressing, shoulder pressing, and any kind of pressing movement is to not train the heck out of your biceps and triceps. If you are blasting your biceps and triceps with lots and lots of sets until they get sore they won't recover enough to be able to do heavy presses and heavy bench presses.

I don't think he ever said he wanted to focus on his presses. He said he wanted to get generally strong all around. But then it seems like you're focusing on helping him be press focused.

For whatever my opinion is worth. People freaking out to be told to gain weight at 200, that isn’t big. It really isn’t. I have a lot of friends in this ball park and they are the same width facing forward as if I turned to my side. I weigh 279lbs with a LBM of 237lbs. Personally, I think being a bigger guy is worth it in the strength department. I don’t get a lot of women looking at me and if they do, I don’t know and they don’t tell me. But I’ve been the strongest guy at my gym before. Funny how Rip says in another video that a strong press is low 300’s. Honestly, I just want to do 225 for one set of 20, then “I’ve made it.” Again, for what it’s worth.

Answer to all problems : "Gain some weight". That's all fine and dandy, but at some point you gotta come up with a better answer
@jaghad
@jaghad 3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, that is, in many cases, the only answer. Like Rip says you have to train the press more often. But having done so and having perfected the technique you cannot press more than a certain weight given your genetics and bodyweight. If you take drugs you change the equation, but, if that's off the table you are back to bodyweight and genetics. And, you can't do anything about your genetics. Thus, the only thing you can change is your bodyweight. It is that simple. I would not follow Rip's advice. I want to look good. I have accepted that given my weight, genetics, the time I can spend in the gym and recovery, I really can't do much about the weights I am lifting. But, hey, that is fine. I am satisfied with the outcome.

I usually agree with Rip's ideas and have lot of respect for him, but I just don't agree when he always advices to gain weight for most problems. I would rather have a smaller press than to have a bigger gut/belly. It seems that LP is not working for that guy and he should try some intermediate program instead of gaining more weight and gut. His rest periods between sets are also quite long.
