Excellent tutorial! I just purchased a Rode VideoMic Pro to go with my new Canon 80D. I bought it upon the recommendation of several successful KZbinrs. I didn't realize it was recorded in mono. When I upload the video file into my editing software, not only is it in mono, but it's quiet. I was only 3-4 feet away from the mic when I recorded the video and had the mic set to +20dB, as several others suggested. I had to both turn up the volume on my laptop and slide the audio up in my editing timeline. But this still doesn't solve the problem of it being mono in the recording. I can't put out a video with mono audio because it would sound unprofessional. (I've read comments with viewers complaining about how a given video's audio was in mono and it sounded like they were back in the 1980s.) When I listen to your video through headphones, I can hear the sound through both the left and right. How do I convert my embarrassing mono sound to a professional stereo sound?

You don't think the in-body sound is that bad until you actually compare; then it sounds like crap. I have a Rode mic because of videos like this. Thank you; super useful.

Great video - I know its an old one but as someone starting out I needed some reference points. Ended up going with the original video mic as the sound will be a massive step up from the camera mic. I think pricing must have changed as found the videomic for under £80 and the pro for £169. I just cant justify double right now and the original mic combined with a dead cat, rode mini tripod and the extension cable came in at £128 delivered and should be a good fit for now. Thanks again for the comprehensive content.

Great video, thanks for sharing, as it happens I have just moved up to the NTG1 and NTG2 from much cheaper mics and the difference in quality is astonishing, I also have the Videomic and SVM both of which are excellent on my DSLR, the NTG's I use on my Canon XF cameras and they are awesome, still use my LYXPro desktop mics and I have a couple of Movo shotgun mics that are pretty close to the Rodes but yes the Rode mics (with their amazing 10 year warranty) get my vote. Thanks again.
