Panasonic preamps are decent. When audio is crucial, I run the Rode VideoMic Go into a Zoom H1, then into the camera. Dual Recording is always a beneficial feature, the Zoom's recordings are also uncompressed.

The tl;dr version is the GO will give you better sound quality than the internal microphone, but if you want noise reduction you have to go PRO. You won't regret it though, you get a lot for the price, and the microphone is very versatile (it comes with the standard boom/mic stand mount as well)

I think one should remember thats all of the mics can easily be improved in postproduction by eq, compression and noise suppression. When recording the same voice in the same environment you could even work with templates. So don´t despair when you can only afford the cheap ones.

Amazing test. I'm glad you did the 1st SPL test with a 1k tone for consistency. Hands down as far as dynamic range, the Rode Videomic Pro won the battle. Also, the equalizing possibilities are plentiful with the videomic pro. Thank you for sharing, just ordered the videomic pro while typing this lol.

First Off Amazing Review! Best I've seen. Nice cinematic shots too. I have the Røde VideoMicro and thought it sounded great on my camera. It's great for the price. I think if your and indie filmmaker just wanted a mic on your camera the Micro is your friend. In this test I found the Pro had way to much bass. The original VideoMic didn't sound too bad. All in all for convenience, price, and quality go for the micro. :)
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Nate! Yeah, damn good that Micro is... And yes, I fine myself taming the Pro with some EQ work in post most of the time I use it. The high pass option helps, but almost takes too much out.

Huge. Your tests, review and explanations were thorough, partially scientific, and excellent. This made it possible and pleasurable to sit through a 15 minute video. So many DSLR and consumer tech reviewers and influencers talk fast and have great presence, but they lack an understanding of tech specs and tech expertise. So often I catch them using big words, but unaware of the meaning or the scientific principles involved. Your depiction and description of cardioid and super cardioid were accurate and not to tech or over the top for the consumer and prosumer users. So many of the other KZbinrs out there unaware, and trying to learn the basics and are hearing a ton of misinformation or versions of what's right and wrong, repeating it, and sounding like fools. Kudos to you. I will be subscribing and tuning-in in 2017.

Thank you for this! I have 2 Rode Pro's and have always wondered if I was spent too much and could get away with one of the cheaper versions. I must say, ramping up the pro's to +20 and pulling back on the levels in the camera really give it a robust sound, more depth. I know now I made the right choice by spending the extra money on the Rode Pro's. Keep up the great work. Review Review Review! For poor people like myself, it is awesome when a reputable community member does real world reviews and explains the finer details that a " sales video " wont or can't do. Thank you!

Very interesting review but you've missed something on the Videomic! This too has the boost features of the Videomic Pro but the switch isn't as accessible! If you have a look in the battery compartment you'll find there is a switch with settings for 0dB, -10dB and -20dB. You need something like a toothpick to flick them into each position, but it's simple enough when you see it. OK, this isn't as convenient as the Videomic Pro but it's definitely there, It would be useful if you could re-run your tests on the Videomic to see what results you can achieve using these options and whether they come near to those you achieved with the Videomic Pro.

To start, keep your mic within 3 feet for you (at most 3 feet). I don't know what camera you have but if you have a flip screen or can hook it up to a external monitor (through HDMI) do a test recording and look at the audio levels ... that's a good indication of your recording levels. If they don;t go into the yellow you are probably recording too softly. If they are hitting the red then you are too hot. Then adjust your cameras levels (or switch to +20 or -120 DB on your mic since it has that option). If your camera has a headphone jack for monitoring, get a decent set of headphones and do a test run while listening (you might need an extension for your headphones).

Panasonic has great preamps unlike Canon cameras like the 70D, 80D, 6D which he has and even 5D mark 2/3/4. So you would do fine with a GO or Micro if you are on a budget, which in my guess you are on a budget because you got a G7. G7 is great for $500-600 btw, nice choice!

Caleb. I just discovered your content. Absolutely fantastic stuff. Anybody can talk into a camera as we all know. But it's your supporting visuals and graphics that differentiate your stuff, superb. Kudos. Also, kudos for recognizing the value of those Sony mirrorless cameras. Just to prove I have more money than brains, I own: Canon 70D with all sorts of high end lenses, Sony A5100, Sony A6000, and a Canon C100, Mark II. So ... guess which camera is actually the most practical for video shooting - even on a tripod? The A5100. Quick, easy, sharp as a tack, flip forward screen. I over-purchased again and put audio into a Zoom H6N instead of into the A5100's audio jack. But, all things considered ... man, that Sony stuff is great. (Except - the overheating problem - in which case we're all scrod.) Keep up the great work.

I did subscribe to your channel. I just got the Rode VideoMic for my Canon 80D and it makes a huge difference to no mic on my videos. Most of my vids are of my Z06 but I do sometimes make How To Fix videos with the Vette and it helps to be heard. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I closed my eyes and just listened to each one as to not be influenced by any bias and the pro sounds the best. Rich, clear no white noise and not tinny at all. I say either the micro or the pro. If you got the cash, get the pro. Otherwise, the micro is good enough.

Compiling my budget interview kit and this review of all 4 of these was very good. Last years similar video was only the go and the pro. Subscribed. Great stuff. Thank you sir.

Worth mentioning about the Rode 3.5mm extensible cable. It's an option for getting your mic within the 12" you spoke about, while keeping distance from camera. Works great for interviews setups etc.

Great point, I should have mentioned that. I've been using this $6 25' cable for a while and love it: amzn.to/2fDy9Xg You can see me using it for the voice tests. Overkill sometimes but great when length is needed!
