When I was an Airtrooper it became damn hard to get promoted if like me, you were attached on tour when the gaps were being filled due to the redundancy tranches. Lost almost a third of the corps and recruitment was slow and low so no upgading courses being conducted. Got kind of stuck but didn't give up. Did the Specialist driver course, became upgraded and put in the role of fleet maintenance supervisor as a secondary role. Became a PTI the year after that. SHQ needed a bod to be SQ's assistant, usually reserved for LCpl but they gave me a local rank to do that job on a very busy year. Proved that I could organise and get shit together to deliver on 3 major international exercises. Got substansive. Took me five years due to circumstance and I was biting at the bit so jumped at every opportunity to prove myself. Sam's right and i'll add that if you stand still, nobody will see you so no matter the circumstance, keep doing something.

1. Do your job 2. Do another unrelated job 3. Learn to do another job 4. Don’t smell 5. Say yes to everything. In my experience it’s not as cut and dry as this, playing golf with the boss helps (never played golf) Or you could join up as anything then rebadge to the PT Corps and they’re make you a Sgt when graduate…winner

Totally suck any officer or senior cock. Laugh (loudly) at all their jokes. Play football. I saw people promoted way beyond because they played football. Misbehave (slightly). The seniors and officers love a character and a bit of low-level crime (usually involving alcohol). You can do serious crime as there are more than a few RSMs that did a bit of Colchester Military Prison, early in their career as Toms, although that can backfire.... Never disagree with anyone (of a higher rank) When served a shit sandwich make sure you tell them how tasty it is.

I found that sitting down with your CoC (1RO and 2RO) and asking them “what do I need to do to get a recommend from you?” really helped. Every reporting officer is different and will (even if only slightly) have something they are looking for. These then become your Objectives on JPA and then, come SJAR time, if you don’t get that recommend, you can challenge the RO (assuming you have achieved the objectives AND not let yourself down in other areas). When I joined I had little to no interest in promotion. I got my first two ranks just by working hard, but I had no leadership skills to shout about. I then transferred to a new cap badge (something I recommend to anyone considering signing off before click) and had a new lease of life within the Army. I went from Cpl to WO2 in a little over 6 years, by applying the points you mention, asking my CoC what I needed to do and then doing it and being visible and dependable to to not just the “right” people, but to anyone that would be on promotion boards. I think luck can come into it a bit as well; being in the right place at the right time. But then you have to make you own luck from time to time! Thanks for the videos! I’m out now (nearly two years) but it nice to immerse myself back into the institution that raised me since I was 16!

@@MilitaryFitness Not bad. I thought I was ready. I really wasn’t! I hear about a lot of folks and their experiences getting out, some good, some bad. Working with/for veterans is good if you can, but if you don’t (like I don’t currently), it can be a bit of a culture shock. The way I approached it was to see myself as a “civvy recruit”, and that while my experience from my previous life could be (and are) useful, no one wants to hear too many military dits, or have an ex Sgt Maj be overly direct with them. So I have been very much on “receive only” mode for a lot of my time initially. I am starting to assimilate, though, so I now feel more settled. And I still have the Reserves to “scratch my itch” should I want to! You got long left?

R.E.M.E is different ,if you have a tech trade ie tels tech ,you get your lance jack straight out of training, within 2 years get your JMC and you have your fullscrew...VM wise your lance jack came on posting to your 2nd unit so roughly 2 and a half years out of training..Getting your JMC could be harder as Tels techs style trades generally got first option on it VM when i was in could be 6 years to get your fullscrew ,,then it was get your SMC and it was dead mans shoes for SGT in the VM trade..Obviously if you tried and got accepted for tiffy ,then SGT as soon as your on your course ,ssgt tiffy when qualified , so tiffy was a quick route ,but you had to put the work in ...Guard that made me laugh we all locked our dooors at 6 for guard mount as if they where short ,they just went round the rooms with the good old saying "get your combats on "...Knew a lad who would buy your guard...Guard commander and 2ic where actually harder than stagging on ,you got less sleep

When we did guard, we still did our day job, driving a fuel tanker for me, Then started your guard duty, 2 on 2 off all night, no sleep just lay on an old bunk with old army blankets. Then back to driving a fuel tanker. Wonder why we used to have so many accidents. I remember getting scabies from the guard room, there was around 20 lads who got them. They realised that the blankets in the guard room had been there since for every and had never been washed. We all had to paint ourselves from head to foot every day in a white solution, for two weeks.

Sam's view is from the Signals and; I totally disagree. You follow Sam's advise because you can not do your trade. The Signals are very good at supporting sportsman, maybe the best in the Army, PTI's, military training courses that then they think you are infantry. Majority of Signals officers are non trade degrees, least of the technical Corps by a huge percentage. The ones going this route are actually graded well and promoted but, tend to be the worst tradesmen and soldiers, great if you want to be a training regiment for your career. Nothing beats operational experience for learning and mastering both soldiering and; your trade

My unit was so bad in the 90s, that they stopped doing JNCO cadre courses for a few years. Nobody - not even the guys at the top, got their stripe. Some of them did 3 or 4 cadre courses, before they got their stripe. One biff got binned off one course on the first day. Guess which one got their stripe? It certainly paid to be a failure.
