How To Get Rid of Rust, Restoring the Honda Trail 90 Sitting 37 years, pt3,

in this chapter of the honda trail 90 l picked up last year, we get to fix up the gas tank with evaporust and boil the chain in oil to clean it, plus getting the rest of the bike into shape,

You're not going to hurt anything by leaving the Evaporust in there for a day or two. It's near pH neutral (think it's very slightly acidic), but the active reactant is a chelate that is strong enough to bond to iron oxide (rust) but not iron. I throw parts into my pail, forget about em for a month, and come back to a rust free part. On removal--definitely don't rinse with water right away! Learned that the hard way. It'll flash rust immediately, and you're filling it back up with Evaporust. Instead, I use whatever solvent I got sitting around. My CL350 tank I recently did I used a couple cups of acetone and swished it thru several times to try to remove all the acetone and gunk that came off the walls. Love your videos Mustie. I watched the CB350 restoration series several times. You inspired me to start shooting my own garage and instructional videos. I don't quite have your zen and patience yet, but I often think "What Would Mustie Do?" when I'm having myself a meltdown!

I've had the best luck leaving stuff soaking in Evaporust overnight, sometimes a full day. That's when it really works its magic. It does not harm paint or metal, only rust, so you could theoretically leave it in indefinitely and it wont hurt anything. I've even thrown rusty coil windings/stator plates from mopeds in evaporust and it doesnt hurt them. The key though is to get it degreased first and all the loose stuff off, for gas tanks i usually throw a handful of 1 inch drywall screws inside and shake it up for at least a few minutes with a little degreaser and rinse with water a few times before using evaporust

I like the way 805ROADKING does it with a bunch of the old style squire nuts in the tank, tapes it shut then tapes it to the rear wheel on his riding mower and mows the lawn! By the time he is done all the loose stuff just pours out with the nuts, ready for the next step!

I had real good luck cutting the Evaporust with 3 parts water and then submerging my tank completely to avoid air bubbles/etc. I let it sit in a tub for two weeks, turning occasionally. Came out mint, paint untouched.

The other trick for smaller stuff, put the Evaporust in an ultrasonic cleaner, works disturbingly fast that way.

I had a friend in college, he had a Harley, and had read somewhere that boiling the chain in oil was the thing to do. So, he did what you did. Unfortunately, he used a Coleman stove, and set the whole business on fire! Pretty smelly business, thank god it was outside, and not in the dorm. Long story short, took several days to clean the chain up, but it worked like a charm.

I always use marvel mystery oil in a tank after evaporusting. A cup or two rolled all around prevents flash rust plus its good for the engine:)

Others have mentioned it, but I'll put in my two cents: You can leave the Evapo-Rust in that tank far longer. Not going to hurt anything other than the rust. If you can provide a source of warmth to it, it works quicker too. I've thought about setting up a vat with an aquarium heater, but never really needed to. All those saying it's just an expensive diluted acid, it's not. It uses a process called chelation to remove the rust. If you look that up, best I can describe it, it's basically forming ionic bonds with the rust to remove it from the steel. Best part about this stuff is in the end, it typically doesn't harm paint (unless the paint was lousy to being with), you don't need to neutralize it to stop it from eating away the good metal like you would with an acid, or caustic de-rusting agent, and you don't need a hazmat team to dispose of it once it's spent.

A quick time saving tip when removing chains is to attach another chain to one side of the split link so when you remove the one you are cleaning/replacing you can pull the chain through the case without removing the sprocket cover.

You reminded me of a guy I worked with at a gas station during high school. He had a bright red '64 Fairlane convertible, and every Saturday he rubbed her down with kerosene. She looked "showroom" until about Wednesday when the shine would give way to the dirt picked up (depending on the weather). One 102 degree weekend the trunk lid burst into flames during her rubdown from a stray cigarette ember.

I've been using Evaporust in my shop for a coule of years. Magical stuff! You can reuse it over and over, just strain it through a clean rag before putting it back into the container.

Boiling chain smells, ah that brings back memories. My father had a tub of oil/wax. It was solid at room temperature. The chain would be laid on the top, and into the oven it went. BTW, top tip, use a coat-hanger through the link hole on the open end... Makes for easier handling and hanging.

I'm no mechanic but for some reason I enjoy watching you tackle a project. For rust removal, a upholstery and canvas awning guy once suggested using oxalic acid. It does not harm fabric or paint and is not that bad on skin in limited amounts. The most economical way to buy it is in powdered form and mix 1 ounce of powder per cup of warm water. It is sold in paint stores as a wood bleach or you can buy it in bulk on Amazon, 5 pounds for $20. I've been using oxalic for 25 years to dissolve rust on tools, metal parts and rust stains on paint and cloth. No need to scrub it. If the rust is heavy I just reapply it until the rust is gone. For metal pieces I put the solution into a tub and let it soak. I live by the ocean where exposed steel starts rusting quickly so keep a spray bottle of oxalic acid solution on hand and find myself using it frequently. Oxalic acid will remove aluminum corrosion too but it will also eat any anodizing.

Evapo-rust is an awesome product , it's the best I've ever seen that completely removes the rust, works better it you can let things soak overnight. It doesn't work well in the cold though, I put some in a metal pan and put on my heater just got enough to make it steam not boil.

Back before the age of driveshaft road bikes, we used to pull the chains, clean 'em with whatever cleaner we had then we would boil them in some STP -- usually out in the garage or outside of the house. I know of a few guys (back in the days) that used their wives ovens in the kitchen to do the boiling / cleaning. Yes, it is very stinky! But the chains would always come out clean and well lubricated.

I used evaporust while restoring an old gun. I was quite surprised how well it worked. I have use many rust converters before like Ospho. But this is not a converter. It removes the rust. It takes a while but results like none other Mustie, you will love this.

The evaporated rust cleaner is amazing. I just did a motorcycle gas tank that was kinda in between your two & it did a fantastic job ! Also when your done & have it dried you can use marvel mystery oil & acetone or as I didn't have any acetone I used diesel with the mystery oil to coat the tank , worked great !! :-)

Love Evapo. I restore vintage pinball/ arcade games and use it all the time. Long pvc capped tube for legs. Chrome items overnight up to 24 hours. Mild steel can discolor, but I would leave it in your tank much longer for better results. Keep up the great videos!

First off...let me say I love your truck! The first video I watched with you looking out its window I knew I would subscribe! Haha! Anyway. I've also got an old ct 90 in much worse shape than yours sadly but they are ok to restore. I've done 3 or 4 now. The last one I simplified by adding a new lifan engine amd 12 volt electrics etc. I haven't decided which way I'm going on this one but Im old so I might do the same again! Even so you have lots of great stuff there...an intact original carb, nacelle, and airbox! Nice find. Worth restoring to runner. On mine last one I kept it fairly stock looking but this one I'm going to swap out a new seat cos I have long legs and my left leg is currently a bit damaged! Good luck with your projects! The best thing I ever used for a rusty tank was The Must For Rust. I put it in the tank with a handful of bolts and kept shaking it around every few minutes. It came out clean with a grey finish inside. That was over ten years ago, and I’m still using that tank today and it’s still rust free...

When they become swiss cheese, its best to use a gas tank sealer. I got mine from a motorcycle repair shop. Its not cheap but works 100%. I used to restore vintage snowmobiles. The gas tanks are metal and form fit to the rear of the snowmobile. When its a vintage item worth over a grand restored, its worth the investment. I always stripped everything down and sealed everything before repainting. epoxy paint seemed to work best on exterior parts. A gas tank is different. That requires a special two part sealer.

I have used Evapo-Rust for a number of bench hand plane restorations with very good results. It does not attack paint or plating. I have left parts in the solution overnight without a problem. I recall a post on some forum where a person forgot about something in the solution for weeks and found such long exposure caused the metal to eventually be eaten away. Parts need to be completely submerged or they will get a "tide" mark where the solution ends which can be very difficult to remove. Oil and dirt will prevent the solution from getting to the metal, so it is important to remove as much of the surface crud as possible. The solution can be reused. I do not know for how many times or how many hours. Dave.
