Wow! Thank you for sharing your experience. A lot of people on KZbin mention the same process, but it was really nice to hear someone say that it actually worked and that they don't notice the smell anymore. It was also nice to hear that you tried several things and figured out which of them was making the most difference.

The biggest problem is the smoke smell is an oil. Don't forget the ceiling either. The ozone machine also destroys the planet's atmosphere. The easiest solution is to use a good degreasing dish detergent with isopropyl alcohol added to the cleaning water to wipe everything down, remove fabrics & carpets. The floor could have been simply mopped. The number one thing I have found to absorb smoke smell from anything is alfalfa. You can purchase it at any farm supply or pet supply store in compressed cubes that are used for animal feed. Place the cubes in onion bags, pillowcases, anything that will allow lots of air circulation & place them all over your home to absorb the smell. The chlorophyll in this plant actually cleans the air; not just covers up odors. It will remove nearly any odor. Just leave the bags in place in your home or car as long as you want. They don't draw bugs or mold or anything other than possibly a rabbit, goat, or horse, which then you have bigger problems than smoke smell. All natural, safe for people & the planet, & nutritious as a tea or supplement if you want to try. To dispose of, just pour the cubes in your yard, garden, compost, or trash. The cubes, when exposed to moisture dissolve & add amazing amounts of nitrogen to your soil or compost. These alfalfa cubes make fantastic sachets for your closets & drawers if you crush them up too & place in cloth bags.

I'm a smoker, but have designated a small bathroom in my house to enjoy my nasty habit in winter, when it's too cold to go outside to smoke. To get rid of the tar buildup on my walls and ceiling, I simply take a hot bath. The condensation from the steam softens whatever is built up so that it can be wiped clean with a damp, soapy sponge. I painted the bathroom walls and ceiling with a satin, washable paint, so it's very easy to clean. To get rid of any odor, I use Lestoil when I wipe down the walls and ceiling. Nothing smells as clean as an area that's been cleaned with Lestoil. 😂😂

My ex has recently left. He was a smoker, so I am in the process of cleaning the house to remove the odor. I have been cleaning the walls with Dawn dishwashing liquid and vinager. The window blinds are being washed in the bathtub with Dawn and vinager. Curtains are being washed with vinager added. I am cleaning the light fixtures. Odorban spray works well for areas that can't be reached. I plan to finish by renting a rug doctor to shampoo the carpets. Bowls of vinager are left out in the main area where he smoked for odor removal.

Ive lived through the same... i started with bleach...watching the tar and nicotine run down the walls was DISGUSTING... it removed much of the smell...but not enough... I used KILZ...also... then when I went back to the hardware store... i was chatting with the gal mixing up my paint...she recommended PAINT SCENTSATIONS... I bought the additions...and IT IS LOVELY!!! (I bought the crisp and clean scent)... the scent stays active for up to 3 years!!! Its been at least 4 since i painted...& I still smell it every time I come home...

This is a very bad idea, you should only use zero VOC paint for your health. Anything with a lingering odor is bad for you and can even trigger asthma in sensitive people.

TSP wash everything, use alcohol based Bin primer over everything, (sadly even stained woods) or use clear shellac. Even cabnets. Replace or seal floors and outlets replace appliances and most fixtures. You can offset with grow filters(carbon) and hepa filters and plants. Search this old house smoke(cigarettes) theres a good 5-8min vedeo on the effort and cost associated with taking on a smokers house. If you dont properly clean and seal or replace the surfaces, it will return maybe just more slowly. You can offset it tha grow filter in each room. And buy 5g buckets of carbon to replace once a year. Only thing worse is smoke and animal piss together. And for god sac 🙏🏼 dont sell it without properly doing a full rehab. A person or a *child sensitive to it could have issues. And it could come back on seller if you dont disclose the contamination. Smokers and pet hoarders can ruin anything. Carbon works the best especially, when working in area at first. But its gonna run you some 💲💲💲💲

You have to get the ceilings too. Carpets also need to be replaced or professionally cleaned.

How many years of smoking does the old owner did on that house? I have the same problem.

The last person that lived on this place that we are about to move in is he’s been smoking for 20 years.

I’m not exactly sure how long they smoked in the house - several years for sure. Try to remove/replace what you can, get all the carpets out, and thoroughly clean the rest, get those windows open, and prime everything with the Kilz specifically made for smoke odour, then paint. Don’t forget inside the closets too, and ceilings, light fixtures etc.

That is tough since you can’t control it. I would open the windows as much as you can so it airs out. Maybe try speaking with them about it, depending on how receptive you think they will be

Ask your landlord. If you explain your rationale, they may approve it. It will benefit them also after all. Just make sure you use that kilz primer I mentioned first, because just normal paint won’t make much of a difference
