I have a black bottom pool which attracts those water skimmer bugs that are on the surface. I was netting some debris on the surface. I scooped up a skimmer bug and flipped it out of the pool. A blue belly lizard comes running on the retaining wall and catches it in its mouth and eats it. It was waiting for me to flip it another one which a couldn’t do again in a million years.

I’ve been fighting these stupid boatman and backswimmers for 2 years. My problem is the stairs. Algae and dirt just stay behind it and it’s hard to move them because we have it in place with the deck. Luckily the stairs broke on one step this summer so after this season it’s going away and getting something that’s easier to clean behind and under. Not something bulky like what came with our pool.

I’m trying to remember but there was a blueish chemical I think called back up that did a couple things, one is help kill algae and two it gets rid of surface tension that the water bugs use to capture or create an air bubble that they use to breath while under water. They either leave or drown. It will foam up when you first add the product but it will dissipate over a few hours. We haven’t had any real problems with water bugs here at our pool but we have a weekly service to maintain it. Pool has waterfalls, slide and in floor cleaning system. Unfortunately there’s no vacuum to waste option on this pool. The skimmers are just a recirculating system at the skimmer from the pool pump return.

how do you get rid of flies around the pool?
@philambrez Жыл бұрын
Home Depot and Lowes have disposable fly attractant catchers. You put them as far away from your pool and any area you don't want flies around, and the flies are attracted away to the catcher. Once they're in, they don't get out. Once full of flies, put up a new one and throw the old one out. They have these for wasps and hornets too. Also, to deter flies from where you don't want them (around your pool), if you have a deck, fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spray it onto the wood of the deck. Doing so deters flies. It's not a perfect solution, but it helps to keep their numbers at bay. The fly traps work wonders. Give 'em a try!

Thanks for all the great content. I'm a 2nd year pool owner and have referenced your material often and the handbook and course were helpful during my first year. We recently replaced the pump on our salt water in-ground pool system (with DE filter) which ran 24/7 with a programmable variable speed pump which ran 7am-7pm. During my daily skimmer check I found a bunch of little bugs (almost gnat like) swirling in the skimmer. So I kicked the VSP from 75% to 85% and am going to run throughout the night to try to clear them from the system. My question is do you think this is a result of the pump being idle over night for the past 3 nights with no surface water circulation? Or something else? I run a dolphin t35 just about daily (didn't last week while I was away), free chlorine has been around 3.5 with each Sutro reading I've received and the water has been clear the entire time. I just kicked the chlorine generate into superchlorinate to make the water a nightmare for any plant or creature. Thanks for any insight.

Skim the bottom of the pool, wait then skim any black dots you see under the water and on the side of the pool. Keep it up, and they can be kept under control. Yeah, they'll leave when they find no food there, but you can't stop them from flying in every day and seeing if there is food. We get a blanket of no-see-ums on the surface of the water mixed with tiny grass particles and dirt that make it through the screen; we live in in an hoa neighborhood and the lawn people refuse to point the grass shooting out away from the pool. I have tried spraying the screen and around the pool with essential oils to keep the tiny bugs out, but it doesn’t help. They are so tiny that they go right through our main pool cleaning net. I literally have to get in the water with the ultra fine net to get everything. There has to be an easier way. I’m spending a good hour hand skimming and cleaning the edge twice a week. Should my skimmer be getting some of this? None of this is getting to the bottom, but I still vacuum often too. Any tips?

@KristyStill same here. The ones I saw dive down into the water but also swim. Weird looking bugs with big eyes. I can't determine whether it's a backswimmer or water boat thing. That's why I'm here today. My water is clear and I'm too poor to afford a pool vaccum right now. Today I did skim them out but, I didn't crush them. Well, I did one just to see what would happen but if they get back in, imma crush em all. Tonight, more chlorine!

I am hoping someone can identify the scariest water bug I have seen. I live in the Phoenix metro area. A few years ago I was sweeping the pool. I was near the stairs and when I looked down I was surprised to see what I had initially thought was a frog hanging on the was about a foot below the water line. I got down to get a better look and planned on removing to frog from pool. As I was reaching to grab it I realized it wasn’t a cute froggie but a evil looking bug. It was greenish, 3 to 4 inches long and looked like it had pinchers and possibly a stinger type tail. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sounds like a giant water bug. They can look like green tree frogs until you get close enough. Has something that looks like a spike at the rear and two legs on the front end that look like pincers. Can also grow to a fairly large size. It uses the front legs to grab a hold of prey and pull it onto a single needle like rostrum, that protrudes from the head. The bite from which is extraordinarily painful. They are also known to feign death like an opossum, so don't pick one up assuming so

fyrye thanks for your answer. You described it perfectly. I’m sure glad I focused in before grabbing it. That would have done for my pool time what Jaws did for my ocean swimming! Thanks again

We have had an Easy-Set above ground pool for several years without any bug problems. This year we put up a metal framed above ground pool with a vinyl liner and all of a sudden we have hundreds of extremely tiny bugs climbing up the support legs and on the edge of the pool. They are actually smaller then a No-see-um. They look like moving wood slivers. They are a tan to brown-black colour and are approx 1mm wide by 3mm long. They seem to be attracted to the water, but die as soon as they hit it. They also die very easily with an indoor fly spray. They were discovered during a heat wave when it was very dry from lack of rain. I live in North-central Alberta, Canada and this is unusual weather for us, especially this close to September. I’ve lived her all my life and have never seen these bugs before! There is no sign of them in the morning, but then it seems like they wait to appear later in the day when the pool is not in direct sunlight. I think that No-see-ums are attracted to these bugs for food. Thankfully they also die as soon as they hit the water; however, some of them have managed to bite us before drowning or flying away. I have no signs of green or black algae. My pump runs 24/7. I did see some pink slime in the hose attached to the pool heater; that pump died and wasn’t running for a couple days. I cleaned out the hoses and put a new pump on with a timer; I also added more algaecide, even though I believe this is likely a bacteria. I have been skimming the top and vacuuming the pool floor daily. I scrubbed the pool walls and floor before shocking it about 36 hours ago. Yesterday it poured, so I wasn’t able to check it. This morning I took the cover off to let the sun on the pool to help decrease the chlorine levels. Again there were no bugs this morning, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t show up again this afternoon. Do anyone have any idea what these little bugs are and how to permanently get rid of them! Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you have a fully flexible Intex pool, draining any other kind of pool can damage it. Mostly, just vacuum and shock your pool weekly.

If shock is needed, why shock, why not none scented bleach instead of shock. And what if my Chlorine, pH and alkalinity are all good. This leaves me with time to brush and vacuum the pool.
