If you activate the tag axle, it actually acts as a raised suspension, giving you higher clearance on the bumper and other axles. Try it on flat pavement, you'll see it raises the whole truck evenly.

I agree it does raise the truck. I was thinking about it and I'm assuming because of that it raises the hit box on the bottom to make going through the mud and snow easier.
