I have an 86 Bronco. Has a 4” lift with 33” Mud Terrains. Lockers front and rear. The vehicles basically unstoppable for any over landing that anyone would want to do. As far as camping. Just the basics. You need food storage, a propane grill, definitely a toilet (you’ll greatly appreciate the purchase). You can get a tent, or sleep in your vehicle.

@@Away907 probably so. I was watching a Tacoma channel where they had their trucks all rigged out to the max and they got on this “trail” and aired their tires down. Turns out it was just a hard packed dirt road the whole time. So they just ended up wasting a lot of gas from the extra drag on the aired down tires.

Im glad you showed the crv. My urban-lander rig is a 99 crv awd. Lifted 2in back/1 in front. Total height is 33in. Sitting on 215/ 75r15 GG AT. Truhart suspension all around. Stock coilovers, although i should get some new ones. light pods. In the process of building the sleep platform for inside as well as shelves. I had the front seat out but the fur-missile was mad. So I put it back in so she can sit up front with me. Yall do test runs to see what you do or dont need. It is a lot of work but well worth it. God speed

I got started overlanding on motorcycle. My tent, sleeping bag, thermarest, stove, spare clothes etc. weigh 22lbs. My tools, compressor and spare parts are another 10lbs. This video was interesting.

Of course the best vehicle to Ovetland is the one you currently have. Put on some decent off-road tires buy or borrow some camping gear. Get a 30 foot good quality tow strap and shackles and get out there. We did quite a bit of Overlanding in our 2wd Hybrid Escape. 265/70/17 A/T's did help a lot. Now we have a much more capable 4Runner. Need to get back out...

I just got a Jeep Liberty in very good condition. I’m planning to level it out on a 3.5” lift, and cosmetically spruce it up with some tires and wheels and some bumpers. Small sedan + dome tent + esky... Add 1800km (maybe more) round trip.. That was the start of our adventures. Loved it and couldn't stop. Like you said though, if you're completely new to camping altogether maybe do a weekender trip first. Seems to be 'overlanding' to some, 'touring' to others (here in Aust, also called 'doing the big lap') or just a 'swag trip' (what we normally do). We have since tweaked our setup to be very practical but comfortable anywhere we end up (solar power 🙌). Thanks for the vid. The Coleman Sundome tent is by far the best/most affordable beginner tent that will sort you out through the elements and hold up for a long time. The tarp bottom is simply the best for anything you might come across.

What I've learned from watching many overland videos on KZbin: First purchases should be a suspension lift and bigger tires. That way, when you air down your tires for the trail, you can be at the stock vehicle height you had before the lift and bigger tires.

This is the stuff I always take on a trip. Gas stove. Storage bin for camping gear. Plate, Cup, knife fork & spoon, a saucepan, a large soup mug i can use as a bowl, A folding self contained camp cot/tent. 4x3m tarp. About 150m of paracord in various lengths. Some bungie cords. 44L ice box. USB powered lights. Probably more USB battery banks than is healthy or normal. A molle seat back organiser with some pouches I put on it that holds things like torches, chargers, spare batteries, shackles, work gloves, fire lighter, a life straw etc. 10 ton traction boards. 12v compressor. (brought an aftermarket inflator with a good gauge, braided hose, fittings and some silicone tape to make sure everything is airtight and made my own inflation hose,) There are also a first aid kit, some basic hand tools, tie wire, zip ties, soap, wet wipes, a tow strap and a hand ax that are always in the back of my car for emergencies. This list of things I've brought and only used once or had break on me is a whole lot longer, but that's my basic kit. I will add cameras, fishing gear, gimbals, tripods, track sliders, camera jibs, or more camping comforts as dictated by the nature and duration of the trip. And to be honest I've been loving it since I was road tripping and overlanding with a dome tent, a gas stove and a head torch. edit: my camp bed/tent is this. The nissan xterra is a good option. Excellent offroad and completely capable. Also fairly reliable especially the 1st gens with the 3.3l v6. Can be had for cheaper than Toyotas and Jeeps.

I've got a good tent that ive had for years my dad originally brought it as im 19 now. Had since like 15. It was less then $100 its a 4 person tent with fly screen, awning and good ventilation i tend to find a 4person tent is only good for 2 living being. Whether that be 2 people or a person and a dog

Excellent video for the newbies. I've been using my 96 4Runner for years and it's been perfect! If you do go alone you want to make sure you are going to be within area where a tow truck can come get you. I've never had this problem fortunately but it's always something in the back of my mind. I usually go with friends and we have 4 4x4 vehicles so the sky has been the limit. GPS wise we plan using LeadNav on the iPad and I highly suggest having one of those super cooler like a YETI or RITC. No power needed, will keep things cool easily over a whole weekend. Those coolers don't perform as well as advertised when it's sloshing around on the trail.

I'd agree I have a fairly decent starter vehicle, a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8. However, it currently needs bodywork, oil pan replacement, and some other issues. WJs are better overland vehicles than their modern GC counterparts in my opinion. That said I'm buying a 4Runner to replace it in the next year or so. I'd say the repairs on the 2003 haven't been insane. I owned a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT as my second vehicle in college. That thing had its cooling system blowout among other issues. The 2003 has survived being side-swiped by a box van. Came within a few hundred dollars of being totaled, but sustained no frame damage. Just had to replace doors and some panels. I don't trust the 2003 overlanding. 152k miles and hopefully only do about 5000 more before the new vehicle. Just have to pay off a credit card and save up $10,000-$15,000.

On the safety side, I would add a two way satellite communicator, such as a Garmin Delorme, especially if you travel alone. If you have no cell service and need to call emergency services it could be a life saver. I’ve used mine once before to call on a newly started forest fire.

I absolutely agree on getting one eventually, but I don't think it's for someone starting out. I personally have the Spot messenger, and use it regularly. It has paid for itself once due to poor planning on my part. In Maine last summer we weren't sure if there was a gas station on our route, and would have had to backtrack hundreds of miles if we hadn't confirmed it.

Very informative. Anyone starting out should know it will be a work in progress kind of thing and a lot of learning on the way. There's probably not a more fun, exciting way to learn than just getting out. Your tips of starting out with someone that has done it before is a great one not only for the actual experience but really to save a lot of $$ by not buying useless things. When it comes to buying equipment sometimes paying more once is better than buying cheaper 3 or 4 times also. The best way to overland is just save $$ for gas...that's all you need. ;-)

Starting simple is really the way to do it. The buy once, cry once motto is a tough one though - sometimes it's good to start out cheap, and sometimes it's a waste of time and money. I started with a $15 Walmart tent before buying a RTT, and don't regret it at all. I've also spent $100 on a tablet for Gaia, which I had to replace a few months later since it couldn't handle all my routes!

I don't know what triggers it but be prepared in your mind that your fire extinguisher will eventually give up and spray the inside of wherever it is automobile or you're home. If it is the 100% powder type a vacuum cleaner I guess is mandatory but it does take your back when you look in a room filled within maximum mass.

With tires, your by and large correct. But, I found out the hard way that mud terrains really don't like ice. So if you know your going to have to deal with ice, steer clear of them.

I use the Masterflow MF 1050. Inexpensive but works just as well as the overpriced compressors. Amazon had them for $70 a while back but the last I checked, they were gone. I bought mine for $90 at Pepboys but they're cheaper now.

I took my 1994 Ford Explorer over landing. Let me tell you something right now, there is NO better vehicle on this earth than the 94 Explorer. Before everyone starts thinking I’m joking I’m not joking one little bit. I passed everyone else on the trails as fast as I could, I got flipped off at least 12 times in one day. I got da Mickey Thompson tires and da broke door that don’t even work but it doesn’t matter cuz da ENGINE is literally perfection. I don’t bother with stupid recover bull crap because I never get stuck because I actually know how to drive even tho I failed my learners test about 13 times. I carry one first aid kit and it’s called a bottle of whiskey, a can of snuff and cigs.

In place of a proper winch and mounting solution whether that be a bumper or winch plate you can spend around $100 on a "cable puller" or hand winch. Harbor freight has an 8k lb winch and combined with couple tow straps of varying length NOT recovery straps (tow straps do not stretch), a few d rings and some elbow grease will get you out of most situations. I have seen good deals at tractor supply for shackles (d-rings), remember if your rig weighs 4k go overkill and get 8k shackles or more. These are the last thing you want to break. This goes for all recovery gear as well, in general go at least slightly overkill and look at the WLL or Working Load Limit. Generally there is a safety factor of 2x or 3x the WLL for break strength but if they list both do the math and see where you stand.

I’ve been overlanding and off roading for 35+ years and I’ve never had to air down my tires. I’ve driven every kind of terrain that exists in 2wd and 4wd without touching my all terrain tires. I’m sure there are people that get some sort of benefit out of it but I’ve never felt the need. Also, I’ve never gotten a flat while overlanding either.

Try it next time you’re on a rough road. Your ride will be so much more comfortable. It also helps with getting up on rock ledges - I’ve had a couple of times where I struggled at street pressure, aired down, and crawled right up.

Tires....I would go with E-rated AT. They can pack the load on hardball and shrug off basalt in the desert. The trade-off is they can be punctured easier than a balloon MT even when aired down, but won't be shredded apart by sharp rocks (rubber is getting more and more expensive, some longevity is a boon). Balloons are awful for loading up with weight. I hunt...I can run for a day+ on Interstate to get somewhere with a heavy load, then air down and crawl through the nasty stuff for many hours with that same load. Overlanding, to me at least, is about the same idea. Lots of kit, lots of travel on AND off road. MT will wear out FAST on open Interstate and not support the load well while cornering even worse.

I liked the idea of RTT until I realized I couldn't take my jet ski down to launch every day without taking apart my bedroom lol. Get a proper tent, fill it with all your ish, and it's always ready when you get back from 10 hours on the lake :)

My wife and I are in our 50s and don't want to climb a ladder or sleep in a tent. To many issues with H2O inside, packing up wet n dampness in general. We've used a '01 WJ Grand Cherokee the last 3 years and love it. Currently have 3 WJs. Use a memory foam mattress inside with the rear seat bottoms removed for more headroom. Have lite cabin tent to put coolers, toilet,if we take it and to change clothes in. Also a canopy. A small gas grill does for cooking. We have a winch on the rear as well as a high clearance cargo rack that doubles as a cooking platform. 3" lift with the rear sway bar removed, 265-70-17 Goodyear Duratacs and factory limited slip diffs. In both axles. Works very well off road and is comfortable to sleep in. Stay warm and dry. Enjoy you Jeep😁🚙

@@bugsnstuff5643 very nice!! Yrah so far my wife and I camped on the beach. Wasn't perfectly comfortable in the back of the jeep but it was our first time. So we could def make improvements. But ya learn as you go. Sounds like you have a nice set up. Mine is still all stock but have plans for improving it.

J k - If you have back problems, like I do, I strongly recommend getting a self inflating or foam mattress when you start camping in the tent. Air mattresses tend to be very cold on the back & will cause lots of sore muscles. Enjoy your adventures & be safe.

Why not use CO2 tank for airing up? Love my PowerTank - quieter and quicker than any compressor.

Revere Overland - less reliable? I’ve had mine for years and I’ve never had an issue. Powerful enough to air up several large tires in less time than the compressor. Size is an issue I’ll give you that.

I have a older Toyota Highlander and like to explore on forest roads but not capable of 4x4 jeep trail type paths.
