There is so much setup for a lot of b-roll footage that people never see. Doing a lot of prep work for small snippets of footage. Worth it though. Totally worth it
@mattih7 жыл бұрын
Yep 100% truth
@GadgetJohn7 жыл бұрын
Too true, for every 1 second of final video I must have 30 seconds of b-roll video and setup time, and yet it's still not enough sometimes. 99% of youtube viewers will never see the work that goes into each video creators make. Such a shame we get hate comments after putting in such hard work.

So, I'm getting ready to start my own channel, and through out the planning process, learning how to shoot b-roll, and actually going out to shoot b-roll has been the most fun I've had with my camera in a long time. @MatteoBadini7 жыл бұрын
Hi Matti, love your work, this is a great video! When I film B-roll I usually start from one setting shot, like a medium shot of the subject, then I do all the different details. When an object is involved I try to think about what sounds remind me the most of that object, for example if I'm filming the preparation of a cyclist I'll film the shift whit a gear change, the tire on the road, and the the brakes. With this technique I can bring the attention of the viewer to the subject of the interview firstly with the words of the interview itself, then with sound and lastly with the image :)

Love the whole thing with B-Roll, and something I’ve found pretty difficult to get when I’ve been out shooting... Mostly because I hadn’t planned it as I was on a trip. As they say, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. It was also interesting that a tips video I’ve tried to shoot before, but it just didn’t work out, suddenly came to me in B-roll as I was watching. So I can continue to describe what I’m doing and add B-roll to show it in a more interesting and cinematic way. Closer details of setting up with mid shots showing a little more environment. Thanks for churning my creative brain matter Matti. Have an epic week Cheers JT

@MarkHoltze7 жыл бұрын
That 6Dii RIG is genius ! Love that camera hack to get a shot. Depending on where you're shooting I find it easier to shoot the camera content first, put that together and when you have a clear cut go out and shoot the very appropriate Broll for that video. You don't always have the opportunity to do that (travelling, location etc) but I also get a lot of cool ideas as i'm assembling my on camera stuff. Then you can go out and shoot very specific stuff especially if don't have the time while shooting. Good tips Matti! Happy 2018

@CollinAbroadcast7 жыл бұрын
My tip is just film all your broll at 100fps or above. You can always speed up, but will have shitty footage if you try and slow it down. There's so much you can do once you have that buttery smooth footage. Edit: film it all on a gimbal as well
@mattih7 жыл бұрын
The problem is that if you speed it up and use it all in real time your shutter speed will be way off and look messed up. But sometimes it doesn’t matter
@CollinAbroadcast7 жыл бұрын
Yea I mostly just use it for speed ramping anyways. But now further into your video, good tips on different types of broll for different types of videos. Not everybody is going to want cinematic shots

Congrats on quarter mill! As for broll my approach is exactly that - plan, make time for it and make an effort to produce it. On my last video which turned out to be my biggest one so far - I actually had a list of broll shots I need to make, and it was a lifesaver because I was shooting in three different parts of manhattan and trying to make it before the sunset. So people - right down a checklist of broll shots, you will not regret it.
@loganandblake7 жыл бұрын
When I'm filming I always try to go in with a the entire video in mind so I know what B-roll I'm going to need and what would be nice to have. When I film Sports I always know I'll need a depth of field shot an establishing shot and a few creative shots for everything going on. So I go back and forth from cheerleaders, band, crowd, and players waiting for the right shot to show itself. In short b-roll is filming everything. haha!

Great Video of the creative process of filmmaking! Never have enough B-roll. As Matti says, make sure you have enough B-roll that covers all scenarios or flavours of the scenes you are shooting. The minute you think you've got enough or that there are still some shots you want but are debating with yourself to get them, go and take them. Worst thing you can do is procrastinate with film making. You won't regret it later in post when you are struggling to find enough footage to cover that gapping hole in your edit timeline! Been there done that a few times.

Doesn't have to be 120fps, honestly a lot of regular footage looks great being speed ramped and any movement can be speed ramped (usually). Just get more and you will start getting the right footage.

i love new camera angles and nice cool shots as the one you used to make the opening of the video. Truth is we get stuck sometimes worrying so much about shot composition that we lose some of that creative juice. I would add to these suggestions, being calm, relaxed and sometimes excited, because thats when creativity shines! when we are under pressure, stuff always go wobbly, footage goes shake and the drama in post is the worst.
