How to get the Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship in Germany?

Thank you for sharing your experience Dr. Ganguli. Just a question, is it mandatory to provide a reference from the PhD supervisor (for postdoc applicants)? What one can do if his/her supervisor refuses to provide a recommendation? would it be detrimental to the application? Thank you.

The review reports come from anonymous experts who are sent your proposal. These focus of your proposal and determine weather it should get funding.

Sir, as you mentioned 5 journal publications: does it mean 5 first author? I have 3 first author and total of 12 papers (including 2nd & 3rd authorship). Please assess my case.

No they don’t have a specific number. Even one good journal paper may be enough. It looks like you have a good case. The decisions are made on a number of factors which include CV, project proposal and its review, letters of reference and the papers and thesis topic itself.

@@Drganguli Thank you for your prompt response sir. I have already got the Postdoc offer from Gottiengen University (in Chemistry) also my postdoc boss will provide 6 months of bridging fellowship. From 1st July. About letter of Ref, I had two PhD supervisors and I worked in a SERB project in another institute for 8 months under another prof in a different chemistry field, also had publications with him. But in the application form only supervisor and another one referee options are showing. How can I give 3 names? Please suggest.

@@N_Mukhopadhyay This looks like a software issue. You should contact the Humboldt people by email. Sometimes they just want to limit the amount of application materials each candidate provides to handle the paperwork better.

sir, i am applying for this fellowship. In the section of key publications, where papers in the pdf format has to be uploaded i am able to upload only one file and not the others. what should i do?

You need to check with the Humboldt people. It may be that you are supposed to upload one pdf file with all the papers. It is possible to amalgamate many pdf files into one file through different software. But do check the details on the application and ask Humboldt staff by email directly.

You can apply in your last year of PhD, about 3-6 months before the degree is obtained.

Yes it should be possible to get postdoc in Germany. Seven published papers looks good. You will have to find a host professor for humboldt.
