How to get to Cosmic Ocean on Every Run - Spelunky 2

A step by step walkthrough from the Dwelling to Cosmic Ocean. This route is designed not only to get you to Cosmic Ocean on every run but to get there with the best possible chances of success meaning Guaranteed Kappala and 99 Bombs and Ropes, Ankh as well as guaranteed Climbing Gloves if you want to do Vlads Cape Skip though I go over the Quest Chain if you’d rather just get Qilin.

NOTE: Quickly check under the drill for Shops or Kali altars if you have ropes to get back up. If its a bad drill check for a Spike-Ball trap to dig down with or use bombs. If you're forced to Drill through a Kali Altar you'll get -16 Kali Favor. THIS is the kind of Spelunky content I need. I’ve gotten to CO 3 times now, and somewhat consistently get to Neo-Babylon. But I always end up running out of bombs before I can finish neo bab, and then I’m doomed in Sunken City. These tips are genuinely helpful, and I’ll be using a few of them in my runs, especially trapping the hired hands. I know how useful it is to have them hold gear, but they always end up getting themselves killed. Had no clue you could train them in little cubbies!

That telefrag at the end by croc man basically sums up my whole experience with CO. I either get neo-babylon or temple at 7-7 and get crushed by elevator/crush block out of nowhere, or get blasted by a spark trap or alien ship out of nowhere. That's just the classic 7-99 experience. Great video, very informative.

Last 4 times i was at the CO, i got hit by fire in a volcana level, my jetpack exploded, and i either went flying and died of infinite fall damage, or i fell in lava.

In tide pool, there is a guaranteed idol, because at 4-2, at the bottom right, there is a entrance to the back layer, where there is a dead caveman and spikes. Go all the way to the left and pick the idol, this will guarantee to get the clone gun.

This is easily the most digestable, and easy to understand spelunky 2 guide, although it skips over the specifics of certain skips, like the olmec skip, this is still easily the best guide for cosmic ocean that I have ever seen, im working on getting to it after beating my first hundun run recently, and every tip I have seen from this video has been incredibly usefull

6:07 An observation for this. You can clone the dice whenever you get a 4 or a 5. You don't need the 5. If you get a 4 you clone your dice and throw whip one of them to get a 6 (50% chance). If you get a 5 you just clone the dice and that's it. If you do get a 4, it's better to clone it immediately instead of wait for the 5, since you have a 50% of getting a 6 next throw instead of 16.6% that you'd have if you go for the 5. It can save a little time, specially valuable if you get an eggplant 4-2 or a very awkward altar in 4-3 and you want to Ankh skip.

14:01 If you fail while climbing a rope and you don't land on the floor with the forcefield you'll go through the floor below Tiamat, fall into the water and be safe, a good reason to bomb down there if you're not comfortable with your chances.

@@Mathemaniac187 It won't happen due to weird interactions if you're climbing a rope when you get stunned and fall through the hole without landing on the floor with the forcefield. It's something very particular. You'll go through the floor instead of hitting it.

An observation for the mothership with climbing gloves and Vlad's cape: The door to the ship can only spawn in three spots: the 5th block from the left wall, the 6th block from the right wall, or the 15th block from the left wall/16th block from the right wall. Test the two possible spots to the sides and if the door isn't on them you'll know that it's on the middle spot (15th block from the left wall/16th block from the right wall). There's no need to try grabbing the ledge, just count the blocks, fall down on them, and if you don't see the button input for opening a door after about a second of being below the screen climb back up and try the other side. Also, approach Lahamu from the right (where you unlock Pilot) to not risk getting killed by shopkeepers.

I think it's worth noting that Camera will also one-shot Vlad, as will the ever so reliable method of Freeze Ray, should you come across either before reaching him Also, all you need to get the Plasma Cannon is a single bomb placed next to the force fields protecting it, which will destroy both provided you don't lomger long enough for Lahamu to shoot you (and either the Alien Compass or a lucky guess on the entrance location)

@@creativeusernvme It is 7-56 but I am pretty sure I can get a 7-99 if I play lame, that 7-56 was archived with Vlad's cape springs climbing gloves and I didn't clone the bag I also have a 7-48 where i got poisoned in ~7-10 (didn't have the ankh), had about 20hp and i ended up playing really lame, then I died in volcano because a random caveman fell on top of me while I was jumping above lava and just died to the random enemy falling on top of me off screen. I usually play relatively slowly until I get to cosmic and then let loose a little and enjoy the game untill I inevitably die. It's no surprise my PB is that low (compared to my playtime) I'm getting to 7-99 eventually, there's no need to rush

You can also get normal shopkeeper dice shop and steal a dice from there If you find the dice shop before 3-1, you can get a guaranteed hired hand to carry the bow, then you can carry the dice, then drop them both at Waddler You can retrieve the dice back at 5-1 if you have no climbing gloves Using this technique will have shopkeeeper aggro (it can be forgiven easily, but i wont explain it now), however it wont anger Tusk

Great strat! I’m gonna keep that in mind as a backup strat if I ever get an early dice shop. I think it was just a few days ago Tusk didn’t give me anything to fight the bodyguard with so I tried to cook a bomb, failed and lost my ankh. Haha Crocmen are definitely RNG, true. You know I’m unsure if I blame myself for that death or not though. If you stick a crocman and stomp him it usually kills them before their safety teleport refreshes (2-3 seconds). Maybe I stomped too soon and it refreshed before the explosion happened? Though it does look like he teleported into a 1 tile gap re-watching it now which can de-aggro them instantly. Instant de-aggro = instant teleport cooldown? I wonder.. Probably should’ve just avoided him to begin with, I guess

There is actually an easy and pretty safe hundun kill that requires no resources. Go to the very left, and wait for hundun. When he gets to the left go to the very right under the pink pipe shaped like a C. Like 95% of the time, the bird will kill the snake with fireballs before getting to you. If the snake lives you need to get back to the left before the snake destroys the platform and do it again. After the snake dies you can just Drop with spike shoes on the bird for the kill.

I usually always go Volcana because if I feel confident in my ability to chain skip it means that I can get the Alien Compass, which basically eliminates 1/4th of the process of finding everything in CO levels. The only problem is that because I play on console I can't download a mod to practice chain skips, so I only do it if I have a jetpack.

Yeah I only go for the Alien Compass if I have a jetpack or climbing gloves + vlads to Qilin skip. I really should learn how to bubble skip so I could go for the Alien Compass more consistently (even though I generally prefer cloning the challenge bag) but I play on console as well and learning skips is a pain on it. I recommend trying seeded runs if you want to learn some more skips. Saves a lot of time when you don’t have to reset for a 1-2 jetpack or climbers. Seed 00000006 has springs and climbers in the 1-2 shop and the key is right next to Udjets backlayer. Speedrun to 6-4 and attempt Vlads Cape Skip. The first time you make it you can float down from the top and try again for more practice. Shoutout to @Zomb1eCube who came up with that practice routine.

I've found it's easier to stomp Hun Dun as he's coming up as he has less of a clear shot with his other head. Other than that...spot on. I just figured out from this video that it was the vampires occasionally screwing me up on the Sun Challenge by occasionally breaking the bubble blocks and I get knocked in and squished. New it was something and only happened about 1 in 5 times. Been playing this game at least once a day since release now and despite platinuming it...still haven't beat co. 7-67 is my current pb.

Sorry if this has been addressed already. I was just wondering if the ankh skip on 4-3 has been patched. I’ve tried it multiple ways and every time everything just blows up and lava falls on my head - but perhaps I’m doing it incorrectly. I just recently got back on the game after a couple years off and your videos have been super helpful! End goal is to get that 7-99 and I just hit a pb of 7-41 last night. this game doesn't really get patched, and when it does it doesn't remove tricks. the game creator himself said he discovered the paste ankh skip in playtesting and decided to leave it in. every single ankh skip is still possible. as a rule of thumb, unless it seems like a glitch (ex. if someone found a glitch to skip levels) or seems like it would heavily disrupt the games balance (ex. choosing what comes out of crates, finding a way to get multiple ankhs) every single trick since the games release is still possible.

I always throw my bombs inward (especially when I have pitchers mitt) because if u throw them outward they have a chance to barely not reach. If you have pitchers mitt u almost always are slightly too far of you throw outward (this is from personal experience of my 4500 hours)

Thanks! There’s two reasons why you throw the vampires below while doing the Backwhip Strats. 1 they’re harder to stunlock than other enemies and 2 they’re heavy enough to break the Regenerating blocks you need to stand on while doing backwhip Strats. You’ll whip a vampire onto the regen block and suddenly you have no where to stand, I usually just give up and bomb the spawner if it gets to that point.

For me, the main problem of carrying dice and clone gun to neobab is that hired hands are awful =) This strategy should make sense for daily, but since I simply want to get most CO entries in fixed time, I think I'd better go Black Market and then Duat for fallback.

Haha fair enough. Hired Hands are pretty awful but once they’re trained it’s just two buttons to put them to sleep at the start of a level and you don’t need to worry about them (for 2 minutes at least). That sounds like a really fun route though, jungle -> temple. Don’t let me ruin a good time :)

For my run the Alien Compass was invaluable in getting all the way to 7-99. Unlike this route I would restart until the first shop has climbing gloves or the Mitt, glasses and spring shoes together (that way you can guarantee climbing gloves when you sac later). I found having 99 bombs wasn't that important. My route was: Dwelling > 1-2/3 Get Udjat, Steal from shop (to spawn Sparrow) Volcana > 2-1 > Rescue van Horsing, kill Sparrow (Skeleton key) 2-2/3 > Complete moon challenge (Bow), Use drill, Kill Vlad (Vlads cape) Free HH's for saccing later. Olmec > Kill Olmec, Give Waddler the bow, Get ankh. Temple > 4-1 > Find Horsing (Alien Compass), Kill Anubis, take scepter. 4-2 > Complete Stars challenge (Royal jelly), Go to golden city. 4-3 > Golden city: If you have climbing gloves or are guaranteed them then sac for the kapala, find a mummy and farm 99 hp Ice Caves > kill yeti (spike shoes), Alien cave for Pulse cannon Neo Babylon > 6-3 > if you don't have kapala yet, Kill tusk, sac all body guards for Kapala 6-4 > use cannon to kill Tiamat and break floor, do Quillin skip Sunken City > Find Waddler grab bow, Complete Sun challenge (24 x Bombs/ropes), use spike shoes to kill Hunden and enter CO

Thats a really good route and great write-up, wow! Yeah the Alien Compass is really good, true especially if you're not super familiar with C.O. I still prefer Cloning the Challenge Bag personally but I have so many hours in this game that its not too hard for me to find the exit off of game knowledge (weird flex I know). Or if I already found the exit I'll usually mark it with a rope or even several to lead me to the exit if I forget where it is (budget Alien Compass lol). But again its about personal preference and how comfortable you are in the Cosmic Ocean with or without using many bombs on enemies/traps as well as finding the exit. For me I have to use a lot of bombs to kill enemies or to deal with traps so It's nice to be able to play it safe and use several bombs on a hard level without worrying about running out of resources later. Don't get me wrong I've finished runs where i started C.O. with 24 bombs and Ropes, just hate doing it like that personally. Thats really, really cool route though and great explanation! I only have one question/note though, I suppose you could skip sacrificing in City of Gold if you don't have Spike Shoes yet (since the only 2 items left for Kali to gift at that point would be Spike Shoes and Climbing Gloves if your 1-2 shop had Glasses, Spring Shoes, Pitchers Mitt) so you could get your Spike Shoes in the Ice Caves and sacrifice in Tusk's Palace for guaranteed Climbing Gloves. What a cool way to play though! You should make a guide out of it! Or if you don't want too than I can do it and give you shoutouts in the description and a pinned comment as well as in the video itself. It's up to you! Let me know :)

@@creativeusernvme Don't worry I know that exact flex haha. To be fair, I would still take the time to find the exit and clear any enemies that could obstruct the exit path. You can make a guide for it no problem haha. I completed my CO run last year and since then I've been too busy to take the time to edit and upload the full run. I have almost 600 gb of extra footage that I still plan to wade through and edit down to a 10 minute youtube video. 😅I doubt it will be anytime soon.

Hey, no Hired Hands can’t hold the dice except for one scenario which isn’t very exploitable. If you whip a hired hand while he’s standing inside the casino he’ll pick up the dice (correct me if I’m wrong, please. It’s been a minute, lol). If he walks outside of the store it’ll count as stealing and will anger Tusk/Shopkeepers so best to keep HH’s napping outside of the Casino/Store. Strangely they’ll only pick up the dice if Tusk or Shopkeeper are still alive so it’s pretty risky and not very exploitable since they’ll kill the HH pretty quickly. Sorry for the late reply. Just had my first run where i got clone gun and bow to 7-1, survived the sun challenge, and then could not find Waddler cave anywhere. Even blew up a frog to look at back layer and could not find him. Any tips for where he can spawn? I looked until almost 5 min on clock then ghost got me. Feelsbadman.

RIP, that’s an unfortunate way to lose a run. From what I know Waddler is guaranteed to spawn on 7-1 and will always be on the main path to the exit unless.. A) You haven’t stored anything in Waddlers by the Ice Caves B) You angered Waddler There is a rare scenario where Waddler could get angry without it being your fault which might of been the case. Its caught me off guard before. Basically if a Mech blows up on Waddlers entrance in the Ice Caves it could anger him. This is because Mechs have a larger explosion radius than normal bombs (like Power Pack bombs) and since explosions happen in the back layer as well as the main layer (if the explosion happens on the back layers entrance/secret door) the increased explosion radius destroys Waddlers Wooden Tiles and angers him (you should hear Angry shopkeeper music too). Side tip: This is also why you should remove your power pack before opening Waddlers This could happen from a UFO destroying a mech off screen which is what im guessing happened. Well that’s my best guess anyways, hope that makes sense.. on the other hand maybe you just got the worst spelunky seed ever and Waddler was in a really weird spot 🤷. I won’t lie it is pretty difficult but does get easier with practice that’s for sure. I can do the Dice strat blind folded at this point (not really but you get what I mean). At the end of the day though it’s just one way to play the game and definitely not necessary to have a good/successful run. Play how you want to play :)

Well I wouldn’t consider it RNG if you memorize all 3 spawn points. Then it’s just a matter of checking each spot. If you found it on your first try though I guess that would be considered good RNG or if you found it on your last try that would be bad RNG. Also dying to Shopkeepers inside of the mothership is kind of RNG now that I think about it. If a shopkeeper is the first enemy to spawn you kind of just lose. There is safer ways to get the plasma cannon though which I wish I added to the video now that I think about it. You could a) jump on the springboards and quickly skip past the spawn points, ignoring the Alien Boss and bomb the forcefields protecting the plasma cannon Or b) use bombs to dig a tunnel under the Alien Boss, climb up and stomp the boss avoiding both spawners in the process. Oh, gotcha. To be honest I don’t think I’ve ever died trying to find the mothership. You can float several tiles off screen into the abyss before dying, it’s surprisingly forgiving. And as long as you have climbing gloves (I only go for the mothership if I have climbing gloves) you could just float to the side and climb back up for another attempt. It is pretty scary the first few attempts at finding the mothership without alien compass though, especially in the middle section. Definitely risky, true but a pretty valuable skill to learn that’s for sure. But ultimately it’s an optional step and you could definitely skip it if you wanted to. Great question, thanks

@@creativeusernvme I have to say it's kind of funny how you automatically assume every scenario has climbing gloves (because why would you not), while maybe the greater part of the community automatically assumes _no_ scenario has climbing gloves because so many people hate them with a passion. As this scenario clearly shows though, they're incredibly powerful despite being hard to use without getting stuck somewhere and dying, so people probably just need to focus more on learning them and not let a few deaths completely turn them off of the item.

I'll be honest when i started playing Spelunky 2 I hated Climbers but yeah now after learning their value I'll never stop preaching them. It is a painful process learning how to use them though like you said. I can't blame anyone for hating on them. I do wish more people would give them another chance though!

Not sure what you mean exactly. Do you mean the game audio (as in sound effects) are at a lower pitch? Can’t say I’ve ever noticed that. Could be a skill issue on my part in terms of editing or something gone wrong in the processing. If you mean why there’s no music it’s because editing skill issue. - I’m working on it :)

this is a great video except for the vlads skip. the only and most consistent way is walking along the bottom, and you don't even need the the plasma cannon / bombs to do it safely.

Yeah I feel like just going across the bottom is the optimal way the only issue I have with it is the Spark Traps on the top and bottom are randomized each run so you can get caught off guard by some pretty nasty rotations once in a while so I usually bomb out a few spark traps to be safe. Plus if I choke I’ll have a bit more of a chance to not get crushed and try again. It’s definitely an optional step though.

The Cosmic Ocean has always been in Spelunky 2 it did take players a while to find it though (being the final secret area) so maybe you just missed the news when they finally did discover it?

The idea is that if you don't have climbing gloves by the Ice Caves you could hold onto the Clone Gun and the Dice and carry them all the way to 6-3 where you clone and sacrifice the Dice for Climbing Gloves at Tusks guaranteed Altar in her Palace. That way you can get guaranteed Climbing Gloves every run to Qilin skip in 6-4. It's an optional step and even when you do steal the Dice you hope to find an altar before the ice caves so you dont need to carry the clone gun all the way to Tusks Palace in 6-3 but unfortunately its not always the case... but again its an optional step. Hey DadTier! Yeah exactly. The Kali gift changes depending on your items plus a few other factors. I try to maximize my chances of getting Spring Boots from Kali by collecting every other item first. Spring boots isn’t a guaranteed item, unfortunately. - also if I have spring boots already I might sac the bodyguards before the dice. If Kali gives me climbers I get to save a clone gun shot.
