How to get trunk open on 2004 Mercedes s430

2024 UPDATE: This is “the best” video that you’re going to find on this topic. However if you get “stuck” on the step pertaining to the “nut”-it’s not a nut, it’s a threaded bolt. Pliers aren’t going to help you at all in anyway 20 years later. That bolt shouldn’t be seized but it won’t turn because standard pliers won’t be grip enough material to apply the necessary torque. You’ll need a rotary tool/Dremel (which is just a brand) and a cutting wheel for the rotary tool. Score the head of the bolt appropriately, I made a simple Mark for a heavy duty flathead, relatively deep into the head. The bolt turned pretty easy from there. The next step that follows removing the driver’s side (L) license plate light is the trickier part. There is nothing from the low viewing angle that you will have that looks like an obvious lever. What you can see [with a flashlight if necessary] is a spring. Thats the upper part of the lever. Follow that assembly to a [ball] joint. That attachment will lead to what looks like another spring [if not well lit] but it is a rod-other videos will call it a cable; it is not a cable at all. That rod is what you need to LIFT UPWARD to release your trunk. It’s very easy to do. You need to lift it firmly abs smoothly because you are dealing with a plastic piece that could certainly break under unnecessary force-this piece is not weak but don’t muscle up on it. You may not notice much movement in the lever but you should hear/feel a very soft click. From there you can lift the lid of the trunk. If you still need to troubleshoot an issue from there make sure to place something to stop your trunk from closing again.

This shows how to open the trunk with the license plate panel already broken off, this is impossible on a serviceable car, the author of the video is a stupid idiot. The license plate panel is screwed on from the inside with 8 bolts, 8 fucking bolts that need to be broken off.

Yep. S430 with same issue. I drilled out the headless bolt holding the plastic panel because I'll use a bigger bolt to replace it. Once you have the assembly to the left of the lock removed get a torch and a long screwdriver. The lever he is talking about in the video is a grey plastic lever with a plastic ball shaped heel above a spring the width of a finger. Use the screwdriver against the lever in a downward motion against the lever and the boot will open. Thank you

Hi, are you sure you needed to take it apart? Can't you just insert the thin little key from the key fob into that black box in the middle directly beneath the Mercedes emblem? I just did that on my 2002 S430 with a dead battery and it worked (even though it is not mentioned in the owner's manual). I heard you say: "The trunk wouldn't open, either electrically, key fob, or with the key." I guess that means you already tried the little blade key inside the key fob? Thanks.

(Tag will cover the damage) but I still don’t understand why was it so much harder and any of the videos I’ve seen. When I’ve used everything, a dremel tool, hammer drill , nothing worked.

Yep, the dremel worked. I squared off two sides then used a wrench. It is a square bolt with a nut so it takes a little bit to get it going. Once we manually engaged the lever the trunk popped right open and now all the electrics are working fine. So maybe it was just stuck?

The spindle is the lever. Push the spindle up with a long flat head or a panel popper which is what I used
