Calling: First time I fell, phone was out of reach. 14 hours on the floor. Finally realized computer was within reach. Nobody I could think of had active email service (ex: hospital) EXCEPT THE SHERIFF's office. Emailed them, they were here in 20 minutes. Said they check it fairly often.

Very helpful. I fell in my driveway, broke the femoral neck. I couldn't even lift my head the pain was so intense, nor could I let my leg down to lie flat. After realizing the situation and checking myself out, I began yelling for help. We 10 families all have 4 or more acres so are not close. My neighbor fortunately was taking out her garbage and sent over her daughter who as a former EMT understood to just make me comfortable as she could which meant putting a support against my hip and a flat pillow under my head and staying with me until the ambulance came. It's now been 9 months and I am doing great, finally was able to put on my socks with my leg over my thigh and I'm hiking in our mountains, mowing my grasses, etc. I cannot afford a life line type system so I wear my phone on a lanyard ALWAYS it also has a whistle attached. In a little pocket on the back of the holder is my Driver's license, medical insurance card. a credit card and a card with contacts and medical info. I also now always have the cane, trekking pole or walking stick in my hand even though I don't need the assistance but having it at the ready I can stop a fall. They are also a great self-defense device. I recommend every elder have a means of calling for help and a means of stopping a fall. A friend also arranged for me to message on Facebook at a set time. If he doesn't get that message he calls. If I don't answer he calls my neighbor or the sheriff.

I was happy with the description of this video. The contents were good, too, but I was hoping you’d address one more thing. If I end up on the floor for any reason, I cannot get up because I can’t put any pressure on my knees. If I could, the rest would be a piece of cake. Also I just want to make a suggestion. Technology has come a long way since the first life alert type products. One of these advancements is the Amazon Echo (Alexa.) I have an Echo in range of my voice from anywhere in my house. Alexa can call anyone on my phone contact list. There are many other possible tech options for a situation like this.

My issue is my knees. They don't hurt at all walking or up and down the stair BUT putting weight on my patella on a hard wood floor is almost impossible due to the terrible pain. Unfortunately I live alone and ALL my floors are hardwood with zero carpets. Also, if I don't have shoes on the pain I have from my toes having weight put on them is just as bad as the knees. It is a terrible situation for me. I do leg exercises at the gym so my legs are stronger, and everything else, but the terrible pain on my knees and toes prevents me from moving much and I have spent hours laying on the floor until I finally make it to bed side and I can haul myself up on the bed. It is hell not being 18 anymore! lol Am 77 in case anyone cares.

Great advise guys👍I fell over in my over the bath shower and after getting over the initial shock of the ordeal which was similar to being in a car crash I laid there for a while thinking about different scenarios looking at things solid that I could grab on to and there was nothing apart from the handles for getting in and out of the bath which were far too high for me to get a hold of .I then stuck my feet over the lip of the bath and had to swing myself backwards and forwards like a pendulum until I could grab the edge of the bath and work my way out.😩 by this time the floor had flooded because shower rose had fallen onto the floor .I didn’t break any bones but some bruises . It was quite a long night for me😩

So VA gave me one of the alert buttons. Being a tad arrogant for a retired trauma nurse, I thought I didn't need it and wouldn't use it. UNTIL my MS butt hit the floor. Even though I fall about twice a month (who counts these events?) and I still haven't needed to use the alert, the tips here are enough to keep me working on strength and weight-bearing. To the vet who said the device was 20 feet away- swallow your pride and wear it. I keep mine in a pocket and if I am wearing clothing without pockets, I wear it on a very nice (but discrete looking) and sturdy chain. It's longer than for a necklace, so I don't get strangled with it, hopefully-but tucked inside a t-shirt, blouse, sweater-whatever-I wear it. My taxes help pay for 911 and emergency services, and even though to this date I have not needed them to help, one day I might. There's nothing wrong with those big buff guys just itching to help the old bat up off the floor. They're awesome and I have nothing but respect for all of them, for all they do. B&B are equally cool for putting up a video on recovering your feet. Lately, I am actually levering down to the floor in different places, like the bathroom, kitchen, yard, driveway, patio-and then identifying what I can use to help in rising. Practice, practice, practice before you need it but the next time I drop like a rock, I will have a plan. (I hope!) Thanks guys, this is so very helpful!

Phones have to be charged. Life alert pendants & bracelets need to be charged. The longer it takes to get a response or for them to find you, the power is going to drain. Especially if it wasn’t fully charged when you grabbed it to go to the kitchen, bathroom etc. So it’s not always pride that’s the issue.

I have a 10 yr old knee replacement & am 8 wks out on my other knee replacement. I stumbled & fell a month ago & pretty much did as shown except for getting on my knees. I used my upper body strength, got to the couch & pulled myself up-with a lot of moaning & groaning I might add. I’m getting older, 63 now, & realized I’ve got to slow down & be more careful. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The ER medics said they would not touch it themselves. Said I had to go to the ER. Thirty minute + drive. I managed to shove it back into place pressing against a wall because the pain was so agonizing I could not wait that long. It is a REALLY necessary emergency procedure everyone should know.

what happens when the stronger leg is the one that's hurt? I did that. My right knee was bad. and I fell (tripped over the rug... yup) landed on the bad knee, but weak knee was too weak to hold my body so I fell all the way down. thankfully it was right in front of the couch so I had that to help myself up. Knee blew up like a balloon. went to walk in medical next day. I have crappy state insurance. they said, "Oh it's sprained" gave me an ace bandage and sent me home.

With me & all my physical problems, my overall balance is awful. I have spinal stenosis & spondylitis. (( Arthritis in your neck, upper & mid spine, also known as your cervical or thoracic spine, can compress your spinal cord. This is called spinal stenosis. When this occurs, the nerve signals don't travel efficiently from the brain to your feet & cause you to lose your balance.)) So, once I'm 'down,' I'm really down. It takes a very strong man, or, maybe two average men to help me up. Any helpful thoughts are definitely welcome & appreciated. 👍

Just stand up. You don’t need to be able to see to stand up. Also, as for catching yourself from a slip/type of fall, land into a push-up position and then lower into a plank to ease out the impact, and if you’re going backwards or sideways, rotate in midair to land facing forwards as best as possible. Also, if there’s something “in the way” of where your hands would land, then it’s actually better because you can use it to your advantage and just fall on that so you don’t have to fall as far.

What saved me was I was able to grab a coat from the closet and bunch it up under my knees. By grabbing the lip of the kitchen sink I was able to pull myself up after several tries. Scoot backwards on your butt. If you have books you can get to or cushions or pillows, even clothing you can lift your rear onto a low stack then make another stack, like a low stair case until you are high enough to get into a chair or onto a coffee table using just your arms. If you are only lifting your rear 4 to 6 inches it doesn't take a lot of arm strength. From that position, evn though it will hurt some you can push with your legs as well.

Hey Bob and Brad, what about if you are 2 miles from home out for a walk with no phone on a residential sidewalk and fall? 2 years ago I was doing my usual walk on Spring morning, was looking up at some birds in the gorgeous blue sky and didn't notice the 2 inch rise in the sidewalk. I am a fast walker and I hit that rise hard and went sailing with nothing but the concrete sidewalk to grab. I dislocated my shoulder . Had to brush myself off with my left arm, put my shoulder back in place and walk back home. Trouble is 2 years later my neck is bothering me and I get vertigo from time to time.

@Kathleen How awful! Why on earth have you not been seeing a good Chiropractor to adjust your neck and a PT?

1) Go to the doctor to get that all checked out. 2) How do you trip on a 2 inch incline while speed walking? 3) How did you dislocate your shoulder from that?

At the moment, I have a broken leg in a cast, 😬 and I'm temporarily in a wheelchair. It's Summer, and I would like to lay out at the beach, or on the grass at some park, but I don't know how to get up without putting any weight on one leg, I just can't figure it out. I can use my knee, though. I'm not as strong as some permanent wheelchair users, and I'm kind of heavy, like 250lbs. I try and use crutches as much as possible, but I use the ones that have support for underarms, not armpits. (European kind) Could you make a video about that? Thanks!! ❤️

The jump cuts in the video are getting pretty bad now. It’s almost Max Headroom-ish at times. Did you change the video codec recently? 🤔 This is a new phenomenon. Greta information as always. 😁🖖

Show do you suggest removing oneself from a nice warm bath in a classic bathtube? Made the end of the soothing water for arthritic pain but had to call my devoted husband to assist in getting my naked body out of that tub. Sad.

If you can reach towels, you can roll them into a tigth ball or tube to raise your hips up to gain some leverage to get over the side or to perch on the side and stand up.. Everyone should have support bars and/or shower chair within reach as a preventative.
