Six years ago I got out of the shower and fell to the floor. I didn't have the strength to get myself up. I was on the floor for a day before I finally got help. Since then I've been too afraid to get on the floor. And I'm out of practice to do so. Your video is going to help me ease into the act of getting up and help me build strength, and confidence, again. It's so weird having to train to do something that came so effortlessly for so many years.

As an occupational therapist who has worked in skilled nursing and with the elderly for over 15 years, PLEASE speak with your primary care provider to get a prescription for physical therapy services. Then tell your PT "I've got a history of falling and I can't get off the floor. Please give me exercises so I know I can do this in the future." Any PT worth their salt would be happy to help you with this. You do not have to wait for something bad to happen in order to get therapy. A prior fall or a fear of falling is a major risk factor for future falls, and it's critical you have the confidence, coordination, and strength to be able to get up off the floor.

I’m 73 and I make it a priority to get up easily from the floor everyday.. I still sleep on a futon on the floor and don’t have a problem with it. Very helpful. I am a 77 year old man who lives alone in Australia and walks about 14,000 steps a day. But gardening this week I sat on our deck about 150mm above garden level and I couldn't get back up. I hadn't fallen. I slid back, rolled over onto all fours and stood up. I couldn't get up as I always had. That surprised me. Your video was most helpful to plan for my future. Many thanks.

As a former case manager, who worked with the senior population, I can attest to the fact that this is a huge problem for seniors. Once they fall and can't get up, they can spend days on the floor until somebody finds them. Thank you for addressing this issue. My unprofessional opinion... When we seniors get down on the floor and stay there for a while (playing games, etc.) ... at least for me, I seem to stiffen up and it is hard to get up. My point is; you might not be so bad off as you think. Try getting on the floor and then do as Mr Farnham suggests, and get up, using a chair.

I'm a 70-year-old stroke survivor with right-side weakness and mobility challenges. My passion is recumbent cycling (there's no upper age limit for adrenaline junkies!). I have a trainer who visits me once a week for a one-hour workout, most of which is taken up with CONTINUAL repetitions of the 'getting up from the floor' exercises. Your video is a clear and logical explanation of the steps involved. In my case, all those drills proved to be a life-saver when I lost control of my recumbent trike on an Italian back road and overturned it. I managed to (painfully) shuffle on my arse to a roadside boulder and, with the assistance of my wife and a passing stranger, managed to lever myself up and drop into the welcome relief of my righted trike seat. It proves the value of constant repetition!

Stupid idea. Most people, even not necessarily older people, cannot easily sit up from lying on their back. Best thing is to roll over. Then get to your hands and knees. If you can't get to your feet from there, you can probably crawl to a place where you can pull yourself up or open a door or grab a phone.

My husband wasn't there, and I really bumped my head. Once I stayed down making sure I wouldn't pass out, I got to my hands & knees, brought my stronger knee forward, and without any furniture around, got up on my feet! YAY! Dollar store purchases will help. Use swimming pool noodles for visual cues. Of course you have safety grab bars. Use rubberized shelf paper for shower stall floor. Easy to launder, give it the size of a doormat. When I assisted my 94 year old dad, I’d say-like a phone booth…left hand on the grab bar, step, draw the second foot in. Gave him confidence. Lots of people think shower stool, but sore knees…even a chair with arms doesn’t help. Definitely use gripper socks though. Wash feet independently, get in and out. Feet can be done outside the bath, while seated. Can highly recommend the new mats made of diatomaceous earth. They’re heavy, soak up water right away, no slip. Costly, but so is having an accident.

Thanks for excellent practical advice! You could say, we should get down on the floor and move, before gravity takes us there! I would add…if you have weak abdominals, you may want to roll onto your stomach and push up and get up on your knees first…then find a chair or handhold (doorknob, etc) to get your feet under you…it’s really like practical “ exercises”, that are everyday movements we all quit doing at our own peril…keep moving…and that includes, from the ground up 😉

I have had reconstructive foot surgery, and a total knee replacement, so getting up off the floor, at almost 67, is becoming more and more challenging. And of course, once down, there isn't always something near by to grab in order to help me get up. So I do the roll over and onto my knees, but I can't bend my knees very easily, so I arch my back up, until I can get my feet up under me, and gradually move my hands closer to my feet, and then onto my knees, so that I can push myself up that way. It ain't pretty, but it works. I never expected my body to be getting older this fast! Thanks for your good and helpful video.

I have always had bad knees. Am now in my mid-50s and overweight (working on that bit though). When I've fallen I can't get up because I can't get on my knees. I fell a few years ago on a sidewalk in the pouring rain... I was ready to just lay there until spring. Finally just had to go on my knee and it was awful and I still needed a neighbor's help to get up. Would also love to hear a way to get up without having to pull all my weight on a knee or two.

Hi Mr. Will, I have watch so many videos how to get up from the Floor for Seniors, and I find your ways beat them all. It is just so simple to practice. I am 86 years old with a bad foot drop on my right leg which is strongest leg after years of playing soccer. That said, my left leg, which is naturally weak has to bear the work load of every activity, thus causing so much strain on the leg. But I think your ways how to get up from the Floor are a joy to watch and practice them. It is an inspiration. Thank you Mr. Will.

Very good video. I like the way the whole movement is broken down into smaller sections in a phased approach. However, I have a modification to suggest. I am fit and strong but have some trouble getting up from the floor because of arthritis in my spine. I have been told by PTs, yoga and Pilates instructors to never do a straight, front-facing sit-up. It's not only painful but could further damage the spine. With that in mind, and considering that many people who can't get up from the floor might have a similar condition, I suggest, rolling over to one side and then pushing up into a sitting position (as we do in yoga) as an alternative to the standard sit-up. This puts less pressure on the back and is possibly more attainable for people with physical limitations.

This is brilliant - an important topic presented calmly, logically and clearly, with the modest suggestion that the routines may need supervision, and that they won't all be for everyone. Such a pleasure to see someone fully engaged with their subject matter, rather than with their own importance. Lucky Farnham! When i was school age and teenager, if i lay down on the floor, i couldn't get up, the only movement i could do was gradually roll onto my side then bend at the hip and knees, this once, at my worst, took 5 minutes, then wait till i could roll onto my knees while getting on to my elbows, wait sgain for my back to ease then rock back and forth, side to side and then was ok to push up and stand. Once it took ages, 10 minutes, but i did improve my muscle strength afterwards and never looked back. I'm now approaching 67 but will never forget those times. Keep moving and improving 😉

Hi Will, You're doing a very great service with your exercise demonstrations. Only one thing: Those with osteoporosis put themselves in danger of a spinal fracture if they round the spine forward, for instance with the sit-up type movements. In this case, they could roll onto their side from being flat on their back and from there get onto their knees. It would be safer and not any more difficult IMO.

You’ve got the right idea because simply, you’re thinking ahead. We should be suiting up. Athletes do it. Compression wraps, knee pads. Getting the right size is the hard part, but once you have it, you’ll be done. A lightweight jacket with pockets will hold emergency whistle and strobe flashlight. It’s padding to break a fall.

My knees look like they are holding my marble collection. There will be no kneeling. Many people my age have the same problem, so can you do this over without the kneeling? Otherwise I am pretty good at getting up from the floor. If I have to kneel, I use a kneeling pad, but I think you're referring to a person who's not deliberately on the floor. Probably not going to have a kneeling pad handy. I've had a couple friends who have fallen and couldn't get up, they were laying there in agony, so I really appreciate your video! Thanks sweetie!💖

There is a variation to the chair portion of the exercise that I find much easier - and also more versatile because you can do it outdoors were there is no chair. From the hands and knees position, pull one knee forward and up. If you can get your knee far enough forward so your lower leg is vertical, perfect. If you can't get your knee far enough forward, crawl backwards with your hands and your other knee far enough to get the forward lower leg about vertical. Place both hands on your forward knee and push down at the same time you are using your thigh muscles to push yourself up. You can push a lot harder if you are over your knee and pushing straight down with your arms than you can if your arms are stretched out to a chair. You can see from the video that he is not pushing down on chair much at all. He is just using his thigh muscle. It is much easier to use your arms and your thigh to push you up.

I’m only 43 but have a newfound respect for the EXTREME dangers of seniors falling and unable to get back up. I am suffering from a vascular issue that causes excruciatingly painful open wounds that lasts for years on my feet and toes. I cannot wiggle my toes, I cannot even step with a single toe on an electrical cord or it will lift my toe and send me screaming in pain. THIS makes pretty much all of the “how to get up” instructions out of the question for me. Adding to the problems is I have sensitive knees and cannot kneel unless on a VERY plushy pillow. I’m desperate to find a better way to get back up that doesn’t cause my foot wounds to backtrack by months.

I was thinking the same thing. Instead of doing a sit up one can roll over onto their side then get up on their knees. Crawling to a strong supportive piece of furniture may be necessary to help get yourself up so that should be practiced too.I haven't fallen or anything but if for whatever reason I need to be on the floor like it may be easier for me to do something I many times have to roll onto my knees to get up. If iI have a problem still getting up I put my hands on the floor then from the doggy position l lift my butt up in the air and walk my hands up my legs till I'm standing. That is if I don't have a piece of furnature to help me. Don't know how the doc would do it.
