I bought a foil board earlier this summer and couldn’t get up on it for the life of me so I put it up in the rafters. After watching Shawn’s video I was excited to try it again with his super easy riding tips. Yesterday I was able to get up on it and actually foil. What an amazing feeling really is like nothing else!!! Thank you Shawn! Love everything you do and the way you explain it all! 🎉

So fun, and Shaun explained it all perfectly. Foiling is hands down our favorite thing to do behind the boat now, and this is coming from a family of skiers and surfers. Terrifying the first couple times, but stick with it and you’ll be riding in the surf wave before you know it 🤘🏻.

Finally ~ a tutorial video that starts folks on a long line! Great overview. I still recommend folks as they pump to waves further back, wear bright colors so other boaters can see you. Without a tow line out that far back, I do not trust other captains to see me so I wear bright orange or neon yellow dry-fit shirt over my CGA vest!

I had Detention back in the day (caught the reference BTW). Going for my first wakefoil sesh this Saturday, on my progression towards Wingfoil. Can’t join you on the lake, as I moved away from Orlando back in the early aughts, and now live in Barcelona. Thanks for the pointers, (I can see all the mistakes I was making, when I spent an afternoon trying to get up on the Air Chair, years ago) and the flashbacks.

Thanks for the tips Shaun! I struggle most with the lateral rolling of the board where it seems to have a mind of its own and usually end up getting bucked off one side or the other. I appreciate your insights.

Great question Jeff. It's a way slower turn/bank than anything I've ridden before. It's just very slow to turn essentially. BUT, it's very fast to climb so in that direction be sure to make adjustments in very small increments, but in the turns it's super super slow, so wait for it and be patient.

Shaun, Loaded question. I learned to foil on an old Slingshot F1 board, 15" mast. Graduated to a 72cm mast with 1700cm front wing. I have extended flight with no rope, still working on pumping and hoping to transfer between waves next year. I want to upgrade to a Hyperlite wake foil package that I can grow into. What board/foil package would you recommend? Ute, Starship or Shuttle? Thanks, Dave
@Shaun.Murray2 ай бұрын
Starship is my personal choice now. Shuttle is great to teach and learn on but if you're looking to pump, Starship for sure

Do you have video of how fast the boat is going at 'idle' when you are first flying? How many mph is it going? This looks so much more controlled than ALL the other learn to foilsurf videos!
@Shaun.Murray10 ай бұрын
I don't yet but you can begin to fly the wing around 6-8 mph on a 75 foot rope bc your speed from cutting is faster than the boat. You can fly the Hyperlite Booster 1300 and Commander 1300 around 8-9 mph going straight. People generally go way to fast on the start and makes them think foiling is scary and super hard. It's not. It's different than anything you've done bc it's a wing and we don't ride wings elsewhere.

Have watched a few "how to foil" vids, but this is the one I was waiting for! Especially after the history of foiling series. Love the way you explain it as you're actually doing it (shout out BBTalkin) and as always the tips and hacks are huge; hope to get to try one before the season ends. Curious on one thing - how do you know when you're about to breach? Is there a feeling from the wing or just learning how tall the mast is and not flying too high?
@Shaun.Murray Жыл бұрын
when the water is calm enough you can look down briefly and see the wing's clearance from water surface. Then look around and see how it feels/looks. Mid mast is a good place to cruise for starters but feels like you're a mile high.

A board with more weight can help but a long fuselage can help too. There are about 5 major components to a foil. Front wing, fuselage, stabilizer (rear wing), mast, and board. All of those have something to do with how a wing flies. The Hyperlite Shuttle is what I currently put beginners on and Hyperlite is getting ready to release a shorter mast for teaching. You can see the different setups on Hyperlite.com

Nice video, was the one I was waiting for to decide on buying one, however the Hyperlite Shuttle set isn't available for purchase anymore in Europe... I have an e-foil (for when I don't have a driver for our boat), how is the comparison to being pulled by the boat?
@Shaun.Murray Жыл бұрын
E Foil helps w the understanding of climbing, descending, and banking, but you lean pretty far ahead of the wing. But definitely is helpful in my experience.

Im 6’2” 270lbs, should I adjust or deviate from the video based on weight difference? Any other tips?
@Shaun.Murray4 ай бұрын
Still the same concepts so you shouldn’t need to change too much other than maybe slightly faster at cruising speed. But that can change depending on your wing as well. Probably around 12mph to fly decently. The general rule of thumb is if the wing and board feel like they’re locked on rails when trying to move around, too fast, but if it feels like the tail is dropping and the nose of the board is going high, you’re stalling and it’s too slow. If you have a setup already, lemme know what it is and I’ll try to help w some of those numbers

I tried to fly for days last summer. 66 really bad knee. Best I even did was to briefly surf the board standing. This year I am on a new knee, but I still can’t bend it much, so all this squatting is not on for me. 100 litre board with an axis 1150 (smaller board was really hopeless🙄) I started kneeling then stood. The turning trick sounds like it will help. How about an even larger board so I can start from standing??? Desperate to fly!! We sere using 5-7 knots as a speed. Any tips for me and my crappy knee situation appreciated folks!!
@Shaun.Murray5 ай бұрын
If you get a board with not many liters you could push it under water and bend your knees very little. Might even be able to do it with a board that has buoyancy but may be a little harder to get it under without the knee bend.

Is a ski rope better so it does not bounce you like a wakeboard rope?
@Shaun.Murray Жыл бұрын
For foiling it's not super important but honestly wake ropes are static (no stretch) and ski ropes are more dynamic (stretch). For the most part.

Fantastic. Get some straps on, like the wing foilers……I’m really looking forward to a strapped flip or raley, just like the wing foilers. It takes plenty of practise……but the tricks that the wingfoilers are doing just show that the ‘full airchair’tricks is possible standing. It just needs someone to push the sport behind the boat!

Isn’t it better to start with straps or at least with one front foot strap? My 10yo started in straps on first session after 10-12 tries on my macrochip with png 1150. Foiling at speed about 5-6 mph IMPORTANT! For those with wakeboarding waterstart experience it is easy way to get severe damage while starting in straps. Falling back with board going up between you and the boat is very dangerous as you fall far below the board level so feet extension is abnormal if you relax and count on your usual joint elasticity

@@Shaun.Murray the idea is that adult could (learn) water-start on big pump and glide (pump and dock) wing like axis png 1310 or sabfoil leviathan 1550 or gong Sirus 136. These wings will be super early planning with much less towing speed than 11 mph and have insane lateral stability
@henryhester18978 ай бұрын
Seems the most unstable position on a foil is going straight. Much better to pull against a 3mph boat and control the line yourself.

For sure! Left foot forward riders, cut left, almost 90 degrees, and right footers, go right. Makes a big difference
