You can also use track pad at a high sensitivity and gyro for precision. I usually have track ball with high friction, and and the pad at 30° to more closely match the natural angle my thumb likes to swipe at.

Hey, loved your video. Great approach. The hardest part of customizing controls for me is finding a starting point, so starting with 90 degree turns and then fine tuning from there made it feel doable.

Having just tried it tonight, I recommend also turning Sweep Sensitivity Scale all the way to 0 while calibrating if, like me, you find that your 90 degree turns are inconsistent. I was calibrating for the game Prey, and unfortunately I wasn't able to find a way to get sweeps to work without completely throwing off the 360 rotation.

Good video! I also like flick-stick but was never sure if I was using right. It's nice to see you use it more or less the same way I do. I really like your system for dialing in your settings. As the creator, is there another use case or layout I should try out? Yes my settings are what work for me, but they were born out of a lack of direction on how to take the settings and apply them myself. Anything you've played with that would illuminate an area of flick stick I've not thought of yet?
@JibbSmartGD

@@mrexpendable1232 Interesting question! Using the God of War example, a lot of 3D games mostly only operate in a 2D plane. If they had a built-in automatic vertical camera reset, they could be comfortably played with flick stick and no gyro (except when aiming). I don't want to shoehorn flick stick into games that aren't suited to it, but it can be argued that traditional stick controls have been shoehorned into games that aren't suited to them either (Mario Odyssey, God of War, etc where vertical camera control is rarely necessary). But since they don't have automatic pitch resetting and people like you and me rely on input remappers, one thing we can do in games like that is have flick stick on always, gyro off by default, gyro enabled with the aim button (like left trigger in God of War), and also enable gyro whenever flick stick is "engaged". This way, players can tilt the stick forward at any time to correct their camera pitch with gyro but otherwise have gyro off for most gameplay. Maybe this is less interesting on Deck, though, where you can always set stick touch to activate gyro whenever you want without having to press anything else :P Most of my time is spent with standard console controllers, because I believe we don't use them to their potential. Other folks do much more creative things with the Deck and Steam Controller, as well as custom controllers, which is great to explore but just won't be available to console players for the foreseeable future. Oh, and some people set it up so they have traditional stick controls when the stick is near the center and then enable flick stick on the edge. I'm not savvy enough with Steam's settings to do that on Deck, but it's an interesting one!
@mrexpendable1232
@mrexpendable1232 Жыл бұрын
@@JibbSmartGD a lot of call of duty games have a keybind to return pitch to neutral, which is great. Because not every game does this, I don't use this feature as it'd be a crutch. Besides pushing to get gyro in all standard controllers, next up has got to be capacitive sensors. I know people that use a button like square to pause gyro and that seems like such an unnecessary problem to have due to lack of capacitive sensors. For me, it would be another barrier to entry and eliminating those will be key in seeing more support from devs. I'd love a PS6 where gyro + capacitive is the default with flick stick. If I could ask one more question, what are your thoughts on fps games that change sensitivity based on context? Tarkov almost never has a consistent sensitivity because every piece of weight slows your sens down. Battlefront 2 classic nerfs your sens while sprinting. How would flick stick work in these scenarios?
@JibbSmartGD
@JibbSmartGD Жыл бұрын
@@mrexpendable1232 I will always prefer a gyro off button in "always aiming" games, but thankfully there are many games that have dedicated aim buttons -- like almost every PlayStation blockbuster -- that should make gyro easy to get into for pretty much everyone (if only they actually supported gyro). Yeah, capacitive sticks are brilliant -- and could largely do away with the need for any other dedicated gyro inputs. I hope to see standard console controllers with them next gen. Regarding changing sensitivity on context -- I usually dislike it, but I haven't played the examples you gave. A mouse player on a sufficiently big mousepad can turn as quick as they want anyway, so reducing sensitivity seems silly to me. Some games will do a turning speed cap, which works on every platform but feels so bad with mouse and gyro (and flick stick). I think the best example to follow for something like this is the example of pretty much every tank game ever -- let the player turn their camera as fast as they like, but have aim / movement direction / etc turn to face that direction as fast as it can within the limits set by the gameplay context. This way mouse/gyro aim doesn't feel bad, flick stick should still work, but the constraints of the game are respected. What do you think?
@mrexpendable1232
@mrexpendable1232 Жыл бұрын
@@JibbSmartGD my solution for slower sens on sprint is to set sprint to a hold button and whenever that button is held, steam input changes layers to a new flick stick that's tuned for that specific speed. This method works for battlefront 2, I've tried it. For Tarkov, idk. I respect their creative freedom to have heavy players turn slower, but like you said they can already turn as fast as they want or use dpi shifting. The player already moves slowly when heavy as well. I can see why they don't want a fully loaded guy to be able to do instant 180s tho. The tank idea is really interesting though. Anyway, thanks for the kind words and thanks for making such a cool and powerful control scheme. IDK if it was your work on this new steam update or if the valve guys went off on their own, but I can tell a visible difference in how much more fluid the new system looks and plays, not to mention the vast expansion of available options. Can't wait for the changes to hit stable!

this was an excellent vid! i wonder if flick stick would also be great with trackpad? for playing in bed, some people use the steam deck case to rest the deck on. i actually made a chest-stand for it with a wide base, so it can stand on its own. picture the switch dock glued to a stiff mouse pad. i made the whole thing out of higher-density (stiff) cardboard. its awesome! on another note, trackpad + gyro is great for steering in racing games, and also great for special moves in fighting games like street fighter as well...

This is an awesome video and was exactly what I was looking for to start out with Flick Stick. Though just to be pedantic, and it doesn't change anything in your video or instructions but you have yaw and roll swapped in your explanation. Think of your device doing a barrel roll and well ... that's roll. Yaw is what you start with on the left/right movement. Again doesn't affect anything in the video since your advice is to combine yaw and roll which means it doesn't matter which one is which but figured I'd just let you know. What's the point of putting a video out on the internet if not for random strangers to point out every minor thing, though seriously great video!

I want to say that in my experience, Flick Stick is better with Gyro always on and only disabled when a button is held (I use R5 for that). With normal stick+Gyro the capacitive enable is for sure the best way to do it but when I use Flick Stick, I like to start using the face buttons and only touch the stick rarely for the flicks and turns. Often times I just use my disable gyro button to ratchett instead of a flick just so I can keep my thumb on the buttons.

This is pretty much how I've set it up as well. R4 to disable gyro when held. I would rather keep my thumb on the right touch pad (set as mouse) for the majority of the time, occasionally hitting the analog stick to flick view (which only takes a split second. I rarely use the sweep function except to slowly check surroundings.) Clicking touch pad reloads. I've also added a recenter camera feature which activates on double tapping (not double clicking) the right touch pad. Steam Deck probably has the greatest amount of control options over any other current handheld PC. Was considering the Legion Go, but will need to see more reviews first.

Let me start by saying this is a great tutorial for those who do not know anything about flick stick or gyro yet. Great explanation. But I think you switch what yaw and roll are on the deck. What you mentioned as yaw is actually roll and vice versa. Roll is a steering wheel. I get that on a controller you hold it flat, and then tilting the controller left or right is roll and moving left and right while keeping the controller flat is yaw. But you dont hold the deck flat. the sreen is more yowards you r fae and you are looking ahead at it, not from above.

I followed your steps to the letter, but every time I try calibrating the 90 degree turns its different (without changing the sensitivity), gyro is off, deadzones are identitical, release dampening zero. Every time I try I zero in on the starting spot, then tap to the right 4 times, the final spot I'm looking at is different every time, without even making any changes to the sensitivity. It changes somehow based on how hard you tap the stick and its preventing me from calibrating. Edit: It was easier with the deadzones turned up to 100, but its still inconsistent each time and I dont understand why Edit2: Turning up flick turn tightness made it noticeably more consistent, still not perfect, but way better

I haven't tried it long enough to give up, but I feel like I'd be in more control with a regular joystick+gyro and a dedicated button for flipping 90 degrees on a dime. With a steam deck the aiming is kinda scuffed because you move the entire screen while aiming via gyro. Also whats going on with your camera? Did you forget it in a microwave? Cool so I tried some risk of rain 2 with dualshock 4's idk why I didn't just play it on deck lol. But the biggest issue as usual with controller gaming is jumping while aiming, its alleviated with gyro quite nicely but anytime you try to circle an enemy its very hard to do properly, i guess take it with a grain of salt with me having a whopping 30 minutes of gyro experience lmao. But i wish I had some additional buttons like on the deck to keep jumping while shooting and aiming properly. Also aiming up and down is a bit of a struggle, and then I recenter the camera by pulling it up past the point where i can look up and then bring it down lol im too lazy to set up the recenter properly as it fails half the time for me just putting the camera into the dirt. (now i remembered because ror2 isnt a very button heavy game I could have used the right top bumber to jump and switched X to equipment use to have the jump key easily accessible, though i would have probably swapped left top and right top bumpers to be able to shoot easier while jumping because I'm a bozo and dont use my middle finger with the index finger to have all 4 back buttons easy to press at any time. I mean you don't either but a lot more understandable on a deck because its pretty hefty and those backbuttons are a better way to spend the middle fingers anyways. Also a good way to calibrate gyro for yourself is to lay the controller on a flat surface and if the game spins around like 3 times or something on 1 spin it should be a pretty solid sensitivity to start fiddling off of.

What joystick caps are you using?

The left one is skull and co Xbox caps from Amazon. The right is some Razer universal grip tape that I punched a 12mm circle out of. The decks capacitive sensor is a no go with all 7-8 different cap types I've bought. When the dbrand ones release, I'll make a video with my conclusions

Your sweeps for 180: It's prob cuz you can spot things on the turn and stop, whereas the flick is so fast, you will prob overshoot a target.

I feel like the actual stick flick should be more for reaction to other things, like taking damage and turning to what is attacking

I'm trying to get flick stick set up on team fortress 2 and no matter what I do Even after setting it to 90°, it's turns aren't 90° every time. I'm getting little bits of variation that add up. I fiddled with all of the settings and can't get it to stop doing little movements after each flick.

I was able to fix this by turning Sweep Sensitivity Scale all the way to 0. Unfortunately that does mean sweep will be off.

Has anyone else here tried this on a Windows PC? Because I've tried setting it up for Infinite multiple times and it's never really worked. There's even a few setups explicitly for Switch Pro controllers and they don't work. Gyro as joystick works fine, but gyro as mouse doesn't work at all despite functioning well in other games. And it's not like mixed input isn't supported, I can use my left joystick for movement and my mouse for aim. Disconnecting my mouse entirely doesn't change anything. Steam itself is handling the scheme just fine as the mouse starts moving as soon as I exit the game.

Same problem, mostly games doesn't work both input like using a controller + moving a mouse. They block/conflict that when i use stick or moving a mouse. (example I press a left stick > mouse/gyro stopped work, or using a mouse/gyro first > left stick stopped work). I gave up and i play more with mouse + Keyboard for mostly Shooter and some games playing classic with my Xbox Controller. Bye Dualshock 4 with nice gyro function what i tested, mostly games on pc doesn't allow this both input controller+gyro as mouse. 😟😉

@@MillhioreX I almost wonder if it's something to do with how Windows handles games specifically now. There might be some weird input cleaning going on behind the scenes or something.

@@colbyboucher6391 I think isn't windows fault, is just games fault (not good programming or doesn't allowed from game devs). Example Doom Eternal or Ultrakill worked fine/allowed using same time with a Controller + moving a mouse/gyro. That not complicated. Like 80-90% of games doesn't work/allowed. 😶

Using the gyroscope entirely to control the y-axis would be too difficult to control the recoil. Originally, the recoil is a precise operation, and the operation in the real space is smaller.

I'm sorry about that. The glitching is in the camera, not in the edit and I tried to work around it. My phone freezes and restarts when recording video and I had to use my webcam. It's not good footage, audio, or gameplay due to my setup, but I hope the information at the least can be helpful

1:1 movement means that 1° in real life is 1° in game. that's how a mouse works, and gyro + flickstick works the same way. Just like a mouse, you can multiply these values, so 1° in real life can be 3° in game. That's how and why you can have kb and mouse precision with this method
