Valve is beta testing a new gyro method and once it's finalized I'll redo this guide. Steam Input's UI has radically changed but all of the settings shown in the video still exist; they've just been split into separate menus and buried deeper in the interface. Action sets are the biggest change, so here's the gist of the new process: 1. In the "edit layout" page, scroll all the way down to the "+Action Sets" option. 2. Add a new action set and give it a simple name like "aiming" or "gyro." 3. You should now be able to tab between the regular and aiming set menus by pressing the L and R bumpers. Fill in the aiming set with the keyboard bindings like gyro mouse, WASD stick, and any other actions needed while aiming. 4. In the default set, add a command to the left trigger. Scroll right to the "action sets" tab and choose the "change action set" option; choose the aiming set, and disable the beep and notification. Afterwards, use the gear to right to change "regular press" mode to "start press." 5. Use L or R to switch to the aiming set and repeat step 4, this time choosing to change to the "default" set. Set this trigger mode to "release press." I will fight Gaben for this

Hey, Nerrel. I think there is a feature most gyro users end up missing out: you can have both gyro-aim on hold AND flickstick in a single config! I got the idea from RE4 where you can press a button to do an 180 turn. By this logic, when possible, I create a flickstick action layer that is activated on (?) button hold. It feels like a great middle ground between a more relaxed and a responsive/snappier playstyle!

I tried to follow the instructions with the new big picture, i can't create my own configuration, i can only use presets, that i cannot edit, whenever i try to change the mapping of a button it revert back to default automatically, and when creating an action set it get deleted, i cannot edit anything and its realy annoying how it work.. I would love for an updated guide with maybe a better gyro support tool than steam

I’d say there’s 2 things that you should’ve talked about: 1. There’s quite a handful of games where all you need to do is slap a mouse onto the gyro with a default gamepad template and it’ll just work. No action sets to keyboard layouts necessary. Doom eternal, risk of rain 2, borderlands, and quite a handful of games have no problems with this simple setup. IMO this should be the first thing you should check, before putting in all this work to have 2 separate sets. 2. As far as the shakiness with pulling the trigger while using gyro, or just shakiness in general if your hands shake too much: minimum movement threshold saves the day. It’s effectively a “deadzone” where you can adjust how much movement is required on the gyro before it’ll actually move you crosshair. It’s very helpful if you have trouble with pulling the trigger and the controller gets jostled around, or if you’re a person that has very shaky hands. Just wanted to give some tips about it. I’ve been playing with my steam controller since 2017 and it’s easily one of my favorite controllers.

Can confirm the first point as i'm currently playing Grand Theft Auto III (original version, not the so called "Definitive" edition) where besides putting the Ginput mod to give controller button prompts and set a profile, I just had to go to the settings with just the Gamepad steam profile and put mouse on the gyro options for the DualShock 4 (although mouse camera only works if the in-game controller options are set to Standard as Classic it's pretty much like PS2 GTA III and has no mouse camera). That said, i'll now try to test flick stick for quick turning.

It's also worth noting that if you use mouse input for gyro, it's good to first lower the mouse sensitivity in the game's settings to the lowest option, and then raise the sensitivity and smoothing of the gyro in steam's settings. This allows for the smoothest possible input as the gyro has more data to work with per movement.
@akuro6470
@akuro6470 2 жыл бұрын
This is very true, and for anyone wondering why there's a difference think of it like this: There is a raw input (which would be the steam gyro sensitivity, in this case) which is the base speed and is as smooth as it gets, and then there is an input modifier which is the in-game sensitivity setting. This setting basically applies a multiplier to the raw input, which can result in jittery movement and skipped pixels as it doesn't interpolate (usually). As far as I'm aware, this also is an issue which crops up through the windows mouse sensitivity settings so if you're experiencing general mouse jitters, give that a look, you want to be changing the mouse sensitivity through its own driver or hardware DPI switches. TL;DR in-game sensitivity is a modifier to the raw input which can sometimes for example make 1 pixel worth of mouse input into 2 or more in-game pixels of mouse movement.

Games really should consider implementing a vertical camera reset input binding for the scenario that someone may be using gyro for aiming. Valve recently added that to HL2, Portal 2, and L4D2, and it makes playing those games with a controller really pleasant.

JoyShockMapper has this built in. You can assign a button that while held will "lift the mouse". Essentially it pauses all gyro input until the button is released. This is better than Splatoon's camera reset because instead of trying to find a comfortable position through trial and error, you just aim the camera where you want it to be, pause the gyro, tilt the controller into a comfortable position, then unpause the gyro. Simple as that.

Splatoon devs had a good reason to do it this way. At higher joystick sensitivities theres change of input errors in the vertical axis since motion with the thumbs are not perfect in one axis. Theres a lot more vertical control with the motion sensor specialy when using 2 hands to stabilize the controller. People just dont like it because they ard not used to it.

@@Refreshment01 That doesn't really make sense when I play a laundry list of PC FPS games using gyro with full right stick control and on-demand gyro aiming. There's no good reason to limit other forms of aiming just because gyro is also available. At least make it an option so that people that don't have this non-issue you're describing can opt out of that nonsense. There's no reason to force any alterations to a game's normal control scheme at all when offering gyro. It is literally a drop-in upgrade.

A suggestion for anyone using PS4 or 5 pads: Set the fire action to Soft Pull on the trigger, then make sure the Soft Pull Mode is set to Hair Trigger, then set the Sensitivity to pretty low. Like Nerrel points out, analog triggers can wobble your aim more than digital triggers, but this helps with that. Also, not gyro related, but play around with the touchpad. You can get Steam to do some pretty cool things with it. At the very least, mirroring the D-pad to directional swipes lets you access those functions without taking your thumb off the left stick. The touchpad is the main reason I don't use my Switch Pro.

YES! THIS! The touchpad is just incredible. I split it into two sections, and then assign each to four buttons. This creates 8 buttons on the touchpad. This was incredibly useful when playing Rage 2 on the Xbox Pc gamepass. That games needs a ton of buttons. It has many weapons and “magic” powers, along with several secondary items (like grenades, health stims, and ability or overdrive infusions). I’ve never seen a FPS requiring so many keys. I can’t even comprehend how much more complicated it would have been on a Switch Pro. Don’t forget to take advantage of Steam’s ability to activate different keys using the same button through varying between short presses, long presses, and double taps (and more). Even with 8 extra keys from the touch pad, it STILL wasn’t enough to fit all the controls. So I definitely had to take advantage of the differing button press activations.

The only thing I'd add about polling rate is it's noticable at framerates higher than 60fps. When using a controller with a poll rate of 66hz at a 120hz monitor, the camera seems to turn at 66 frames per second, even if the game is actually running at a higher rate. It's weird to describe, but it basically means the switch pro is capped at 60fps for games using the gyro, which is fine for anyone with a standard monitor, but probably not enough for players who put a lot of money into their rigs.

Okay, I've rewatched this 3 times because I love your videos on all things motion sensor. This way you can skip the "start press" and "release press" steps. You can also adjust the long press duration to be short enough that it'll mostly be unnoticeable, but you can still tap LT normally for quick-time events. #3) You may improve DualSense performance in gyro shooting by activating hair triggers or just setting the firing action to a soft press.

Your earlier videos on gyro aim got me to really learn and appreciate it, and now I am totally spoiled and feel offended when gyro aim isn't available if the controller supports it. You have fully converted at least one person that is now a gyro fanatic that spreads the word. Quick tip: Make sure you are using a high-quality bluetooth adapter on your PC. I had a hell of a time getting Switch Pro/DualSense to work reliably using the ancient USB dongle I dug out of a drawer, but after buying a new one they work correctly. It wasn't a problem until I started using gyro, I'm guessing that it was always slightly janky and I just didn't notice because it's so much easier to tell if there's a problem with a smooth input like gyro. So tl;dr don't use a shitty BT adapter. Bonus tip: You don't have to have a down-sights or over-shoulder-aim button in your game to use the hybrid method, you can still setup a "gyro on" button in the exact same way by using a free button or a paddle on the Steam controller. I usually use a high-speed camera on the right stick for fast turning and then a gyro-aim button on a spare trigger, bumper, or paddle for fine aiming once the target is in view.

Tip - Set the default action set for controller triggers to be analogue on soft pull, with their trigger types set as normal threshold. This will keep the trigger presses normal like a traditional controller, with full analogue ranges, and only the full pull of the left trigger switches action set to the mouse-gyro aiming. Also, you can mimic the multi-press modes of face buttons via the show-activators and add multi-keypresses with different press modes (tap/hold/double-tap/triple-tap) and their start/end times in milliseconds via the sliders. This works well for a M&KB only titles that have a separate Use key (E) from the Reload key (R); You can set the X-button on an Xbox controller to act with tapping it activates Use (E), but holding it for a short period (2ms more) activates Reload (R), or vice versa.

Never heard of flick stick as a concept until now. I have to say that is pretty awesome. Controllers are usually better than mouse and keyboards for games that map the full 360° to the stick, like 3D platformers and twin stick shooters. Flick stick essentially turns every fps into a twin stick shooter and let gyro deal with the aiming. Instead of making gyro and the stick do the same thing but each with their disadvantages (sticks are not very precise and gyro can't do very large continuous movements), let them do different things, each focusing on what they do best. It is genius.

As nerrel mentioned in another video, in gyro and in mouse controls you engage your wrist and arm joints in the motion. you can get greater travel and finer control than what you would get with 1cm of thumb motion. @@UniqueVagueHope Yeah... I agree that is an option. But I think is more of a patch over a system that doesn't work very well instead of a solution. It solves some problems but creates others and not everyone can play at high sensitivity. It is fundamentally different than flick stick. And maybe flick stick is not the best solution either, I haven't tried it yet. But it is a very interesting inovation which tries to solve a problem instead of walking arround it. Effectively adding a feature exclusive to a controller while retaining at the same time the precision of a mouse or something close to it. But of course... your option is an option, also increasing sensibility of gyro and decreasing for the stick is another possible option with its own advantages and disadvantages for other players.

The problem here is: People. The advantage over flickstick is that it works as peopld expect with the addition of finer control. Since the Wii we have had a more natural, precise way go point/aiming but people refused to adapt. Even camera control was improved but the industry rejected it.

I really hope Fortnite is what leads more shooters to implement gyro aiming & flick stick. Usually most of the other shooters follow what Fortnite does, so perhaps gyro/flick stick will be another instance of that. With that said, the fact that Fortnite doesn’t support the Switch Pro Controller on PC is unfortunate. As for mixed input, it should be a common feature not just for gyro, but also for accessibility reasons (Ex: Mouse & a Left Joy-Con).

Hey Nerrel, I do want to thank you because I've been using Gyro Aiming whenever I can and I have noticed in FPS gaming (when configurable) that my KDR has increased somewhat. The biggest issue I find is gyro on/off and its a bit jarring. But it has been quite smooth beyond its hiccups for games that aren't specifically configured for it from the gate. It hits a strange gray zone of 'this feels great' and 'something is off'.

Playing with gyro with the first time changed everything for me, I was shocked at just how natural it was. I’ve played with dual sticks for two decades but just playing gyro for a few weeks now I literally cannot go back to dual sticks lol. Thanks for turning me on to this
@Creshex8
@Creshex8 Жыл бұрын
Your experience is similar to mine. But I’m shocked at how so many people have the opposite experience. I synced with the gyro almost instantly. I just needed to adjust to not using it TOO much for looking (this will make it feel like you don’t have enough range in your hands and arms). I needed to put a little more of the work load for lookin onto the right stick. But after that, it almost feels like the crosshairs are now being controlled with my thoughts. What amazes me is not how incredibly easy and fun the gyro is, but taking very difficult shots even with a mouse are almost effortless. I’m playing God of War Ragnarok, and the ease at which I can snap shot people in the head or legs is just amazing. And maybe more hilarious, I actually think the disadvantages of the gyro are a feature: the aim shake from pulling the trigger. Keeping steady hands is a welcome exercise to train while playing with the Dual Sense, since it’s a skill useful in real life, like when shooting actual firearms. The best use of the Dual Sense was definitely in Horizon: Forbidden West. You pull all the way back to draw the bow, and you had to work to keep steady hands to release the trigger and let the arrow fly. It was challenging but a lot of fun. But I also had to laugh at the absurdly impossible shots I made that would have been incredibly difficult even with a mouse. I’m talking about shooting small bolts off giant robotic turtles, shooting tusks out of the open mouths of the robotic hippos, and even taking insanely far headshots from humans riding mounts at distances so far away I had to calculate arrow travel time. I beat the game on hard with no aim assist (as I always do when I have access to gyro).

Valve needs to add "analog emulation" to all remappings of analog inputs to digital outputs; many of the modes do not let you control the rate of key tapping in proportion to how much you're pushing/squeezing the input (or how fast you're rotating the gyro), and in many games if that was present it would produce pretty good results.
@superswiftpics
@superswiftpics 2 жыл бұрын
I kind of use the hybrid method. I eventually realized that trying to force the game to accept multiple inputs is a useless gesture and most games support analog movement but not button presses. I have everything on my controller set to keyboard actions and have my left analog stick as the only controller action. If this still doesn't work I just set gyro as controller mouse. It's not as good but it's not the worst compromise. I really wish that more games supported native steam controller support. Rocket league is one of the few examples that actually use this but since epic games bought it, the steam controller support is broken and some inputs don't work. I hate how I have to spend hours in halo infinite getting a control scheme I kind of like and then barely play the game. Playing CSGO was amazing because I could just open up the steam input screen and set whatever action I like to whatever button. I like having one button that does a 180 degree turn, steam has that baked in. Having native steam support means I don't have to go through the hassle. I don't know why more developers don't support it.

Excellent video! Thanks for pointing out the strength of the steam controller; keyboard and mouse, only without the keyboard and mouse. Its the single best controller that was ever made to fill that task. Depending on how you set up the right trackpad, it doesnt even matter that its not as good for flickstick. I tend to play with the sensitivity high enough that a single full horizontal swipe results in a 360 turn, so a half swipe (because the thumb stays mostly centered on the pad) accomplishes the same thing as tilting the stick back with flickstick (a 180). I then crush the vertical sensitivity scale by half, 180 for a full vertical so a 90 on a half, for easy y axis recentering which is something flickstick cant do without an additional dedicated button. Enable trackball with low friction and high vertical friction scale, and it even has a form of infinite turn! I'd say the trackpad likely has a higher skill ceiling than flickstick as a result, but flickstick will be easier to get used to (sort of, trackpad low sensitivity easier than flickstick, flickstick easier than trackpad high sensitivity).

I know some people who can’t get used to MnK, some who literally can’t. Aim Assist helps for making their experience more enjoyable, but can be abused in a competitive setting. Some games know this and don’t allow aim assist which makes even casual play with a controller a pain for the people who don’t like MnK. been a fan of this channel for about a year after i saw the steam controller video and it also got me into gyro aim w/ my ps5 controllers + steam. really awesome to see a dedicated vid on this topic as these controls are super under appreciated and not very supported by devs. anyone looking to get into this should read some of these top comments for other tips. especially checking if a game supports gamepad + mouse and keyboard. this is easiest to set up and gets you analog controls + perfect gyro + rumble, which is just awesome. the real game changer is a game that supports steam input api, like days gone. w/ action layers you can get full analog brakes + gas on bike but when on foot the left trigger can be used to set up gyro aim. on polling rates the ps5 controller can be "overclocked" when plugged in for even more response when playing at ultra high fps. there's youtube tutorials on it. one last thing to mention when comparing controllers is rumble, if you plan to use it. ps4 gyro is heavily affected by rumble which ps5 is not.
