This was really interesting! Knowing about the distortion, eq tweaks and reverb made sense but actually hearing the dry vocal track pre treatment was great because understanding how it sounds at source is also really helpful in recreating this style. 👍👍👍

I think you're not fair about distortion on vocals. Great albums have some kind of effect in the vocals: - Filosofem - Burzum - Suicidal Emotions - Abyssic Hate - Ofte Jeg Drømmer Mig Død - Afsky - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide, - Leviathan - Telepathic with the Deceased - Xasthur So, future one man band out there, It's ok to use distortion on vocals! Great video, I really enjoy your channel!

The vocals on Filosofem are something very special, generally I feel black metal vocals are too exaggerated and sometimes intrusive, but Varg managed to do something that is both haunting and atmospheric. Pardon my pun but it's like a wolf's howling

@@Kaozgoat Filosofem has loads of distortion on both vocals and guitar and that's very obvious, I think also Varg likes to tell this oversimplified take on it that he "just recorded his vocals through some crappy stereo" which seems almost on the same level as the urban legend about Ulver recording Nattens Madrigal in the woods. It's ok for artists to admit they use distortion to make something sound more "lo-fi".

Nice tutorial. I think compression is important unlike you said because otherwise vocals will pierce the ear so much making it unlistenable. Btw compressor did not work due to 1:1 ratio.
