@@djabthrash I did a quick video on this. It's more of a demonstration than an explanation, but the key for me was to start out by ramping up into a nice strong clean mixed voice, then adding the distortion over the top, being careful not to lose the clean tone underneath. I should also mention that I'm very much still learning how to do this. So definitely don't treat my demonstration as "the way" to do it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWXZmIh3hrGjkNU

Dude “fry scream” is an umbrella term with multiple different techniques. Modern false cord screams also require vocal cords closed and you can keep your scream for 10 and more seconds which would NOT happen if there would be a huge gap in your throat leaking the air. Most of the FC screams nowadays are almost the same as fry screams but with low larynx and cartilages vibration. Think Whitechapel and lotta other bands

@@elishaorosco... this needs a long explanation but i'll try to keep it short. First of all, not the whole community. Some people :) This is essential to understand. He joined that Discord server when there were some "core" people already. Like Topest and his... Well... Say, "friends". They had some audio files on Dropbox. And Topest helped lots of them which is fine. He was (and surely still is) good at screaming so he helped lotta people there, mostly verbally. Then Marcel joined and started to share his materials. His website, his GREAT tutorials and audio files etc. Also he started to give lessons there. The old bunch of "friends" did not like that at all. They kept arguing over and over again at some points. And I saw all that shit they put on Marcel. Looked like a bunch of jealous kids. Marcel was extremely helpful for newcomers, while the old guys mostly just sat on their asses acting like "meh this is bullshit but I won't even bother to explain the correct way". You know what? Some assholes there even blamed Marcel for stealing (!) their materials (!) publicly. So he organized a call with the owner of that server and them. And they came to conclusion he did not steal anything. But I unintentionally just got myself in the middle of that war and I had no intentions to stay there. Marcel is one of the most objective and chill dudes. And he was very helpful. While Topest and his "friends" were full of shit and arrogance and ignorance all the time. Eventually I just freaked out and said everything I thought bcs I had no intentions to stay in such a toxic shit hole. And they kicked me ofc :) Months after that, I talked to Marcel and found out he left the server and deleted all his materials because that toxicity still continued to exist and he was just tired of endless shit they tried to poor on him. That's what he told me, I didn't see it by myself but I trust him he's a great guy. That server is actually full of extremely talented dudes, one does amazing whistle screams, another guy got massive growls like Alex Terrible. But that small percentage of assholes that were jealous... Damn it's only like 5-10% of them but they treat that server like their own place and hate when someone else starts talking to people there. Hope it explains things lol

I got lucky and screaming always came very naturally to me. I've always been able to do high and low false chords, fry's, inward and outward pig squeals etc. Don't do inwards btw guys, they have some risks to the vocal chords but classic inward pig squeals are fun to do, cant lie lol. I started in 2006 so screaming is very second nature by now. You should be able to go into any of the above styles of screaming at literally a talking volume level with zero throat strain. That's how effortless it should be to get into a scream. Many people think screaming HAS to be loud but real diaphragm, throat and vocal control means you can literally get into a scream at whispering volume levels. I'm basically saying if your forcing your screams out, straining your throat and/or can only do them 'loud' your probably not doing them 100% correctly and could lead to injury. Once you are able to understand how to do the basic fry and false chord screams you can easily add distortion/texture by changing mouth shape, jaw positioning, tongue shape/positioning and should be able to go from high to low and change vocal styles in literally one breath / note. Yes, you can switch between vocal fry and false chords in 1 breath once you understand how to get into each of them. Some people only ever unlock 1 type of scream and that's fine, but I urge you to try to learn them all and keep practicing. Don't get discouraged, once it becomes second nature its really quite fun.

Shitttt! I’m a woman and made all of these « mistakes ». Dont get me wrong, i didn’t try alone. I followed step by step but still… even if you try not to do mistakes, you can’t. It’s learning steps. I like to call them « learning to understand what I’m doing » cause I immediately know that it’s not quite right and I try to change it but i juggle a lot in KZbin. I’m testing shit until I understand what it produces in me. Second day now and still no scream. Meh. With a bunch of reverb, lots of dub and volume up, it can almost pass as back vocals (not lead vocals) but it’s cheating. It’s faking it. First day 3 hours of wraaaa wraaa crap. Second day 30mins and i think I made one small scream there in my first minute and I was like « this is it!!? » but then nothing happens again. but I have no idea I what I made different. Mostly, I keep on doing vocal fry, on and on, it’s not ear-candy! Vocal fry, I got that right away for some reason… 🤷🏻♀️ but THEN? every time I try to project the fry : or I lose the fry, or it’s an annoying not louder sound (like a fucking nose buzzer) that comes out. Some say « do a head voice », some chest… I try both. Why can’t I scream? Is it that I kinda do scream but I have a weak natural voice so it sounds quiet or I just don’t do it right yet and i only do vocal fry? The sound is there (I think) but it’s so thin and quiet that it’s irritating ears. I’ve started with the « having a pissed off day » exhale sound to do a sorta growl. Did few words (surely wrong). But I didn’t like the feeling. I felt like I was asthmatic! I kinda am anyways. I’m Leaning toward fry scream. It’s literally taking me no effort in breathing. I just wanna add phrases, words or backing vocals in some non-metal songs. (Yeah I’m weird) so no death metal scream, no growling like a beast. Just saying words in a high pitch with a nice tight distortion but still a singing melody. One day, when I’m good at it, I’ll try some whistle notes with fry! Cause I do whistle hehe that would be awesome!!! 😮 I’m a contralto.
