I just turned 69 last week and I would love to live in Scandinavia. I visited Copenhagen last year with my daughter and we absolutely fell in love with the hygge vibe there, the quiet saneness. The Danes are so chill, well-educated, soft-spoken and polite. The streets are spotless and there is a sense of quiet order (the only ones jaywalking were the tourists!). The Danes are very calm, and they respect and follow the rules. As soon as my daughter and I returned to the States, it was like re-entering chaos. I always feel so calm and happy whenever I'm traveling in Europe or Scandinavia. It's just a whole different vibe. I hope to visit Norway someday. I love their feisty independent nature and quirkiness. I'm a little quirky myself. 😉

Great video, guys! Ronald and Victor were very informative to those seeking employment in your country. Of course, Victor is so likeable, it's easy to see why he'd be hired. I admire his determination to secure a job related to his education. The info about hours of work is helpful for those outside the E.U.., as was his comment about interacting with Norwegians. Great questions, Ronald! Your next video should showcase Mads dancing the Flamenco 😆. Hope your next video is not so far away. We miss your humor and sarcasm.💖💖

Thanks for uploading the video (still waiting for Julia's bit Ronald :) I don't think it's possible to get a white collar job without speaking Norwegian. Careers in finance, banking, law or construction probably require you to speak at least business level Norwegian and learning a new language takes at least 5 years. But that shouldn't deter anyone from studying in Norway. You can complete a bachelor or master level degree in Norway for free and there are many programs taught in English. University of Oslo is well respected and tuition free for both EU/EEA nationals and internationals. That is truly amazing, those people are super cool for doing that (just for comparison, my uni in the UK charges twice the amount for internationals.) Please thank the commissioners of this video on my behalf. University is not a place to look for work it's there for people to learn. Final question: are you going to make a video about the student visa application process, accomodation and general expenses?
@scandinordic
@scandinordic 5 жыл бұрын
5 years seems a long time. If someone needs to be fluent quickly in a language they can get there at least halfway quickly, there's lots of methods. One is to learn the 50/100/1000 most common words and join community organisations that embrace Norsk culture. It is possible to be at least semi literate in a matter of months with time and persistence
@YOURWAY2NORWAY
@YOURWAY2NORWAY 5 жыл бұрын
In finance I think English would work, but maybe not law and construction. 10 years you had to speak Norwegian in Victors job, not any more. E is taking over. LOVE! This was so useful on so many levels. Plus I have the image of Mads dancing flamenco burned into my brain. It is NOT pretty! (Only joking Mads :)x But the Welsh girl has a question: You mention that EU students can work as much as they like but non EU students are limited in how much they can work. Is that to do with agreement/arrangement Norway has with the EU? I'm just wondering as now Britain has left the EU, how it would affect British students wanting to work and/or study in Norway.

In Canada, where I live, no one and I mean no one charges less than $50 an hour for violin lessons. I have been looking on finn.no to see how much people charge for violin lessons but I can't seem to find any. The nice thing about teaching music is that people come to your home for lessons - you don't waste time traveling around to your students' homes. Does anyone know how much people typically charge for music lessons (violin and piano) in Norway ?

@@YOURWAY2NORWAY I hear uk is kicking people out... My Canadian friend as been living here for 4 years and she has to go back and reapply for another visa... In the USA if you been living there for 5 you can get a permanent residency visa. Now the uk is changing laws us brits have no idea what its like for the Europeans and non living here. Its a complete mess. We could of easily changed how people enter through airports and ferries...

Useful advices though my current problem with norwegian professors can be summarized as different understanding. While they try to be short but concise it is difficult o deliver the true purpose when you write a paragraph and receive a sole line then something definitely is misunderstood that need you rewrite another email. Pls tell us how academic position recruit PhD scholars thanks

I applied for a position at Oslo University, it said they need ppl from my country for i donno some crew diversity. 28 ppl applied, and they rejected me. I Checked and the guys they accepted were both Norwegians. I was a poker face the whole day. I mailed a complain but they did not reply anything logical. It seems to be hard to find a proper job in Norway. Good luck out there.

I know that it can be difficult, also for Norwegians. You send your appmication and hear nothing.. The university has to have a public notice when they need ppl. But many times they already have people in mind, people that are already working there.. Don't give up. Good luck to all of you 🤞

I agree about wanting not to get a common job. But in my experience, getting a job in your field (even for part-time job) is like a nightmare, especially if you’re not from engineering study. Still, I really suggest foreign students to keep learning Norwegian as English is never enough to land you a job you want. Even for a position as a waitress in a good restaurant, Norwegian is still necessary :)
@YOURWAY2NORWAY

Hi Nin A. I think you are right: Its much easier for engeenering and IT skilled people to land a job only speaking English in most parts of Norway. I think it is a different situastion in Oslo. When I am out eating, more and more waiters are only speaking English. The same when I get a haircut at Cutters. Sadly, you have a different experience, so I am not categorically at all. Crossing my fingers for you! Thanks for sharing your experience and advices. Cheers from Ronald & Mads

YOURWAY2NORWAY hi Ronald & Mads, thank you so much! :) After applied for around 50 student-job applications, I got to some interviews and finally hired! One of the biggest restaurants in Oslo turned my trial (prøvevakt) down just because I have no sufficient experience of being a waitress. Yet, I communicated pretty good Norwegian. So, jepp, nothing is easy :)
