Call me a sand bagger, but I'm trying to stay at White belt as long as possible and rack up as many tournament experience/medals as I can (once Covid-19 limitations lift). Going on my 3rd year as a white belt (2 active at the dojo/class/rolling and 1 year, studying at home, drilling and learning moves on the grappling dummy). I like being a white belt because there is no pressure and everyone is helpful. Sure I can get railed from time to time, but that's fine. Iron sharpens iron.

Been training BJJ since May 4, 2021. Most weeks I train 2-3 days, but sometimes I only got there 1 day a week. I’m 33 years old, in moderate shape, and have a decent ability to learn. I received my first stripe June 15. I don’t feel like anything special. I know I’ve learned so much; but I still feel like blue belts are almost untouchable-except when they let me work. We have some amazing blue and purple belts that are awesome training partners. I really feel the phrase, “chase skills and belts will come.” I wasn’t ready and didn’t expect a stripe.

Love the advice, man. I’ve been training on and off for two years now and just recently started getting consistent with my training. Honestly, I really resonated with your point about just enjoying the journey and coming to class with an empty cup and ready to learn. I learn something from everyone, even if they’re brand new. I always write down the techniques we practiced that day in my journal and practice it in my mind.

Hey brother. Love you outlook and wise words. I am a purple belt in BJJ, it took me just over 4 years. I trained 6/7 days a week, travelled to various countries and attended BJJ specific camps to allow me to train more than my normal routine while holding down a full time day job. You mention you got blue within 10months, how many times a week did you train and what methods did you use to progress so quick? Curious as I live out with the UK and I understand all schools have different criteria to meet each belt. Of course this can be based on ability, skills, competition and/or time spent on that mat. Keep up the good work. All the best.
