The hot warning rings true. My son who is nearly 4 has been inching closer and closer to the wood stove. We’ve told him a million times to stay back, it’s hot! We even have a little tape line on the floor that was a reminder for a “safe distance”. Well the other day he walked by it while we were vacuuming and no one specifically said hey get back it is hot. In passing he brushed the side of his hand across the stove. He earned himself 3 solid blisters (which we took care of and are healing now) and real understanding of “the stove is hot”. He’s little enough to not be worried about protecting his ego yet so he came right out and told us he touched it on purpose. I haven’t seen him walk inside the tape line since though! Some kids need their lessons taught by experience. He’s my fourth child and the 3 that are older then him took my warning and never felt the need to touch it, but some just have to learn differently.

*FOR BURNS* - I was told by an R.N that she used apple cider vinegar for her children after they've burned themselves, and I have found it's like magic. It stops the burn from hurting, and whenever I've used it, I've never had any scarring.

Speaking of motivation, when I was a college student I worked after school at a home with three boys ages 8-12. I was to make sure they got their chores done, fixed supper and got their homework started as both parents had their own businesses. One day the 8 yr old was to vaccum his room. He wasn"t going to do it. Didn't want to. I explained to him that this wasn't a vaccum. No, No! This was your dance partner! And I proceeded to dance with the vaccum cleaner all around the bedroom. He squealed with delight and he soon danced around his bedroom with his dance partner. Mission accomplished!

I watched my mother and gramma in the kitchen but I wasn't taught how to do anything. I taught myself the best, most efficient way of doing dishes, I taught myself how to clean windows, I taught myself how to do laundry (at age 12, I was doing my own), I taught myself how to cook (starting with boxed mac n cheese, also at age 12), I taught myself how to bake (again, age 12...and fun story: I didn't know back then that a half cup of butter/margarine meant a stick so I scooped off-brand Country Crock into a measuring cup LOL). Heck, I even had to teach myself to tie my shoes (4th grade). As an adult, I taught myself how to do even more - everything from balancing the checkbook and making a budget to gardening and preserving food (with a LOT of help from books and the Tube). My mother constantly harped on wanting us to be "independent" and "self-sufficient," but didn't teach us HOW. I don't want to repeat that mistake. I wish I'd had someone like you 16 years ago when I was pregnant with my oldest. I did start teaching all of my children basic skills and let them all help with things but there were too many times where I was impatient and/or the bigger resulting mess was frustrating. It's something I've been trying to work harder on and I often find myself wishing for a "do over" button haha Anyway, thank you for doing what you do. And blessings on your daughter's wedding and marriage ❤

I grew up in a family of 10. When we had our son - 14 years into our marriage (by the GRACE OF GOD) He was on my back in a carrier, then in a tiny floor seat, and by the time he was crawling, had his own special drawer to pull out plastic bowls, cups. By the time he was over 2 years old, he was mixing flour, baking soda, salt, and water (yes, I set the perimeters on the amount) on the floor over heavy craft paper I could then scoop up and use as fire starter for our wood stove or the campfire. By the time he was able to stand on a kitchen chair beside me (safely) he was learning measurements and making up dishes with me. By the time he was 9 years old he was fully a "chef" and while I was recovering from knee surgery was putting together incredible meals and desserts - and would ask me over the stair railing area that separated the living room from the kitchen - if he had questions and I would talk him through the steps. Then it was a period of NOT wanting to cook or even reheat food! He is now a university student and his favorite cuisine is Japanese, so while we didn't cook that way as he was growing up - he has no problem creating and cooking his meals with what food he has on hand or the home-grown pantry staples we send with him each "school" year. Every basic tool he needed to be on his own that we could grow-him-into, we did. And, yet, I STILL learn from folks like yourselves! Love seeing children BE children and YET learn an abundance of skills along the way and the responsibility to do so!

One of the comments really triggered my memories. I truly love my mom, and miss her terribly (I lost her 25 years ago when I was 34). But she didn't allow me much instruction time in the kitchen--whether she didn’t want to deal with my extra mess or take extra time with cooking, I don’t know. But believe me, I WATCHED! I remembered ever after how to do things, and have replicated a lot of her food. She did teach me how to peel potatoes, how to use a rubber spatula to get EVERY DROP (I'm a stickler!), how to bake things properly. But I wasn’t expected to take a turn cooking or washing dishes. I wasn’t given any chores at all. And that was not good, I recognized later. I will also readily admit that I didn’t teach my kids very well, either. I lacked grace. They would tell you that. I'm ashamed of that, but God has given me a second chance with my grandchildren! And what fun!

I raised three sons and they all helped in the kitchen and learned to cook and clean as well as other chores . When they are little they want to help and work next to you. I feel like so many people wait until they are teenagers and your window of opportunity is limited. I agree with everything you said. I have said this before I wasn’t looking at it like I was raising sons - I was raising future men and I wanted them to not only be competent but be good partners which they are ❤ I live right outside NYC and other moms thought I was being SO HARD on them 😂 my sons are 30,28,26. As they reached their early teens I gave them cookbooks and they could choose a recipe and they shopped with me for the ingredients and made the meal and they were so proud! One thing I learned early on is when raising children discipline means to teach 💕
@lisatakeitorleaveit
@lisatakeitorleaveit 3 ай бұрын
Side note - I did this in all areas as I can see you do too. I also handed them an nyc train subway map when they were early teens and have them plan a day. Then I would happily get on the trains they choose and when they made a mistake I let them figure out how to solve it. It builds competence and confidence. - my youngest son joined the Marines when he was 17 and after boot camp his drill instructor came up to me and thanked me for raising a competent young man that knew how to get it done 😂😂😂😂😂

First, LOVE the hair. Thank you for teaching your children to go out into the world and be adults and take care of themselves. Too many parents don't think of these things. They just complain about being so busy then that kid isn't ready to move out. They also want to be their kids "friends", they don't remember they have the responsibility of sending them out.

I remember when my oldest son had the chore of folding towels from the laundry. It was his 1st time for this chore & he did not want to fold towels. So he rolled them into balls & thought he was finished. When I noticed his work I said "It looks like you are having problems folding towels, so from now on that will be your job until you learn to fold them right." I have to laugh about that now because the very next time he folded towels, they were perfect! I think sometimes children will do a half way job because they think it will get them out of having to do it again.

Love this! THANK YOU ❤ Here is a little condensed story that happened about 25 yrs ago when I had little ones: Our 12 yr old daughter was the eldest and during calving season, she agreed to help with meals. One day, we had a set of twins and ole Angus Mamaw cow decided to only nurse one calf. After a quick trip to our local dairy for fresh colostrum and then several hrs feeding our 'rejected' calf, I tucked our new baby calf in and took a bath. I thought several times I should transfer the new colostrum to another container ( it was in a typical store bought milk jug🍶 ) but exhaustion sent me to soak in the tub to thaw my aching muscles. At that same time, our daughter started a batch of pancakes: thinking she was feeding her siblings as well, I left her alone knowing she would do a great job! About 30 minutes later, my husband arrived from the barn: I heard a brief kitchen conversation then abrupt laughter!😂 Apparently, she was NOT feeling generous and quickly made a batch of pancakes only for herself.....and ate them! However, her lack of 'generosity' backfired: she had inadvertently grabbed the colostrum to add to her pancake mix instead of milk! Initially, she was pouty and a little mad she'd been 'caught' not feeding her brother and sister, but we laughed so hard about her eating colostrum that we forgot her 'oversight'. Lol! Good times and precious, precious memories ❤

My younger son is 36 and autistic. He has been in the kitchen since he was 4 or 5. He can cook a full meal and even makes up recipes on his own. He washes dishes almost as well as I do, does his own laundry and putters around in my herb garden. He doesn't do things just the way I do but he is confident and capable. It has saved me a few times when I have been sick and he has taken over and done everything for me.

Excellent video. Thank you for your wisdom. Raising six children as a full time out of the home sole provider, developing my children’s skills has been difficult. I’m excited to begin to implement these skills beginning this morning. My children have the desire and I often shoo them away because I’m tired or there’s time constraints, etc…I now see that I’m not allowing them to develop much needed life long skills. I have three adults out of the home but I’ll sure be doing all of this with my younger three. After watching your channel, I’ve been so inspired to begin to follow my hearts desire as a mom. Even if I’m working outside the home and likely will be a single mom again, I can do this. Children are a gift, not a burden and one thing I’ve learned in the 24 years of being a mother is that you cannot get the hours, days, years, back. There’s no do-overs.

AMEN! Once again your advice is sound, tried & true. My husband & I had families who believe as you do. We had chores inside the house & out. My brother & his wife taught their 2 boys the same way as did my husband & I with our 3 boys. I cannot believe how many boys grew up without a clue as to how to cook, clean & do laundry or even grocery shop for the very basic of items. Obviously their moms didn't believe they are skills that would help them throughout their lives. My brother's boys & our boys (all grown by the way) are not afraid to cook up something on the stove, in the oven (even baking) or on the grill. Our oldest son even cans a few items & one even makes homemade ice cream for Mother's Day. We are all proud of the competent young men we have turned loose on the world. Or is that turned loose into the world? 😂

I firmly believed the boys needed to know how to do basic cooking, sewing up a rip or replacing a button, doing laundry,etc. It helped that their dad liked to cook, and kept trying to learn how to sew a button on. I basically taught hubby along with the boys....lol, and being of engineering background, he learned to make pie crust better than I do...lol!

You are an amazing mother! If more mothers were like you, then our younger generations would be far better off. At my age of 62, I know what you say is true. However, I have met very few mothers that have the insight and fortitude to teach their children what they NEED to know. Kudos to you for sharing all your wonderful knowledge with the world at large. You are saving so many young mothers and children tons of stress that is not necessary. My grandmother did not teach my mother things because it was "more work than she could handle". Yes, her circumstances were different, but my mother did pay the price not having learned those skills early in life. As so, in a domino effect, so did her children. So, when I see someone like you who breaks it all down so anyone can understand, it makes it so much easier to understand. You are REALLY helping people with this video. May God bless you and your wonderful family! And I pray the wedding has gone beautifully! And a slide show of the wedding would be awesome!!!

I pray the weather provides the glorious day you have prepared so hard for. ❤️ I trained my children very young and by four they were canning applesauce. Cutting, cooking and milling apples thru a sieve. My youngest at four made soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. At four they also drove the lawnmower on their own after years of steering. At seven they cut tobacco with a machete. I was a helicopter mom yet also knew they needed their independence with some chores. By the way they also were in the A Honor Roll all their years. 🥰❤️🥰 I adore you Ruth Ann for your energy and great motherly practices. 😘

Ruth Ann, you’re the best Mom. You have such great advice, and I so wish I’d had your KZbin videos when I was raising my two sons, who are now 50 and 47. I was too impatient, but I was young, as I had them at 18 and 21. I watch a lot of Homesteading and Farming videos, and your cool and calm personality always makes wanting to see more of your beautiful family. Congratulations to your daughter on her wedding day❣️ I can’t wait to see anything you have for us regarding the big day. God bless all of you❣️

I appreciate your wisdom and sharing it. All four of my boys learned how to cook by being by my side from early age. Today they are all grown men in their 50s. Two of them actually had jobs in restaurants and worked their way up to lead cook and helped work their way through college in that job. One of my boys was a weekend cook in a sorority house in college. And when they got married, I am not kidding, none of their wives knew anything about planning and cooking meals and my sons ended up having to come home from work and cook dinner if they wanted to eat. Even after grandchildren came along, they still were doing the cooking. Crazy. Just this last Christmas they started talking about picking fruit in the orchards and coming home to help can and freeze food for the winter. They also talked about how I did batch cooking, making one dinner for the night and one to go into the freezer for another day. The memories of their learning was positive and I was so happy they shared that with me. Skills of independent living. Blessing on the new couple. I know they will have a good life with parents like you.

I love your spirit! That is the key factor in your wisdom. It reminds me so much of the way our Heavenly Father approaches us; meet them where they are and lovingly, tenderly take them from there to where they need to be. It’s a big picture, long range goal, not a harried, impatient immediate perspective. You bless us all! Again, I hope your daughter’s wedding day will be covered in blessings! 🥰

You are a good momma. I grew up with many siblings and my momma made sure all of us knew how to cook, bake, and clean the kitchen. I did the same with my children. My daughter started at 9 months with cookie dough and by age 3 she was frying chicken by herself. My son was about 1 year b4 he started playing with cookie dough. Both of them are grown and excellent chefs in the kitchen. My daughter is a 3 generation canner as well. All children need to learn how to cook, bake, and clean. We have saved a lot of money because we cook from scratch. Ty for sharing this video. So many parents are afraid to let their children in the kitchen. If children are taught at an early age to work, when they grow up they become responsible adults.

I wish I had known these things when my children were small. I was a young mother of 3 boys and most the time I was trying to figure it out myself. I can now take this solid advice to my 6 year old granddaughter and hopefully create some good memories as well. Thank you Ruth Ann!

I like the way you think. I raised boys who at 11 years old could prepare simple meals, do the laundry, clean the house (including kitchen and bathrooms) and mow the lawn. Now, my grandchildren are learning. The oldest is 11 years old. She is responsible for doing 2 loads of laundry on Thursdays after school and that girl can cook a brisket - changing oven temps and basting - with a flavor and tenderness that will rival the best chefs. She likes to bake a treat for the family (she is the oldest of 5 children so far) on Saturday afternoon. She mastered her favorite bread recipe when she was 10 years old. The next child is 6 years younger than her and the other 3 came within 2 years of each other-this is just 1 of my son's family. The 4 and 5 year old children are quickly learning with excitement to be able to do what their oldest sister does. The 2 year old helps clean up and get utensils. I anticipate the newborn to be even faster at these tasks. It seems that once the oldest child was taught with patience and consistency followed by complements, the other children are eager to gain a place in the family's positive spot light!

I sure wish that I could have done this with my son. I unfortunately wasn’t saved till I was about 45 years old. I was married to a really bad man that I had to leave. He started drinking, then got into drugs, then got into selling pot. So I had to get away from him. Even though he got busted growing pot, a South Carolina judge the state is crooked as all get out, gave him partial custody. Which meant I had to baby my son to keep him away from his dad as much as I possibly could. But praise God He is faithful and true fast forward 30 years later we are both saved and so is my husband.

Hi Ruthann, I'm in my 70's, Oh how I could have used your WiseNess years ago, when I had a Headstrong young redheaded son. Even though I don't have young Children anymore, your Approach to working with and teaching your children, what all parents or child caregivers, should be teaching their young children about what they need to learn to become self sufficient young adults ready to leave the nest, Is so Inspiring. Have you Considered writing a book on the Subject? I Truly enjoyed this video. Hope you had Beautiful weather and a Beautiful Wedding!!!

You are expressing yourself very well. I wish I had this kind of knowledge when my children were young I feel that they would have learned kitchen skills a lot better than they have them now. I did a little bit but it was very stressful and my son at the moment does not have fun in the kitchen and I think it's because of my stress when I was young trying to teach my young children. Thank you for putting out this video and forwarding it so nicely that I'm understanding what I did wrong and what I can change now. ❤️❤️

If anyone is worried about the dishes not being sanitized by hot enough water, the solution is simple. One more dishpan with clean water and a splash of bleach, last step after the dishes are washed and rinsed. And when you're all done toss the sponges and dishcloths in there.

I have seen your philosophy in action on 3 Rivers Homestead videos. She has her toddlers helping her stir and add chocolate chips, etc. They all have outside chores appropriate for their age/strength. Her young teenage boy bakes a lot and now wants to be a baker😊. They help with butchering and caning. Everything you said here was spot on.

I was lucky not only did my Mom teach me but my Dad did as well as my Aunt who’s was like a second mom to me, from Cleaning the home, kitchen duty’s, cooking meals from scratch , laundry , how to can and preserve food, to killing and cleaning chicken, and I did love each thing I learned, most of the time lol sometimes it seen bad but it was not, and my Dad taught me with his big garden he had each year and each year it seem to get bigger lol but I love gardening and being out side in the fresh air and sunshine, on my hand and knees planting it’s so much fun love it, , I can not do a big one where I am but a small one is 0k, one day I will have a big one and I consider my self very lucky and thankful that I had people who wanted to teach me . I thought everyone knew how to do all this boy was I wrong collage open my eyes to just how thankful I was lol. when I have a family I plan on teaching them to, everyone needs to know how to take care of themselves with good quality skills, I am not sure I will get to teach them about the chickens but the rest I can teach them . Thank you Ruthann for everything you do for us , Congratulations to your Daughter and Fiancé, or Husband, which he might be by now lol. And congratulations to your Daughter and her Husband on their first baby and your first Grandchild. I know that it will be blessed with a GrandMother and a Mother who will teach it wonderful things.

I remember, at the ripe old age of around 5, that my mom had me " help" her clear the table and wash dishes. As i grew older all 3 of us kids learned to carry our own dishes and eating utensils to the kitchen, scrape our plates and put them in the dish water. We all had our turn washing them as well. When i was around 8 i started helping mom prepare add ins to baked goods, baking apple pies, etc. I started cutting up and preparing veggies and fruits for canning around the same age. What fond memories you raise up in me RuthAnn.

I spent a lot of my time watching and learning how to cook from an early age. As soon as I could stand on a chair and reach the stove, I cooked all the eggs for breakfast for 6 of us. Eggs to order. Dad always wanted over easy. Eating has always been important to me for some crazy reason.😃 I was cooking for myself by 8 years old. My problem wasn’t eating, it was doing dishes.

Congratulations to your daughter and for new husband! And of course to the whole rest of the families. When my son was really small like a year and a half I would take his hand just on the oven door outside, it wasn't even real hot touch it real fast. And say ouch hot don't touch that ouch. I would do this numerous times. In fact, I would actually do this with my animals as well. To discourage my dogs from maybe jumping up with their paws onto a hot stove. Work like a dream. Also with having a cat in the house. Whenever I have something boiling or frying. I always put a screen on top of it. I'd rather not go to any type of hospital if possible.
