I’ve been in the car business for almost 7 years now, 3 of them at the luxury dealer (BMW, Audi, Porsche). I’ve been a technician for that time, but have just moved up to service writer, and eventually would like to move as far up the ladder as I can. Everything you are saying rings true in my ears, Ed. I’m just glad to hear some reassurance that it is possible, and it wasn’t just me going crazy telling myself that!

I love the honestly, especially taking about these young dealership owners, straight to the point they were given them and came from a lot of family funding. People see 18yr olds in exotics and say I wonder how they did that, well 99% of the time someone helped them exponentially get there, finally someone who admits where the funding comes from and not some kid saying he can afford a $500k exotic at 18, love the videos keep em going

As Ed mentioned, there are so many auxiliary jobs in the industry NOT related to selling cars. For example, the entire staff of Xtreme Xperience is in the exotic car industry and get to drive, play with, work on, photograph, etc our cars. My marketing team members are all enthusiasts who get to play with supercars, but they are professional marketers, photographers, videographers, have PR skills, or content skills, or advertising skills. My point is, you can often apply your current skill set to a segment of the automotive industry. Most people imagine all the "driving" you'll do, but 90% of jobs in the automotive world never get to touch cars.

I work at a Bmw dealership and everything he is talking about is so true. I get a lot of overtime and spend almost all my time at work and never get a pat on the back. Stuck on a VinWiki video binge while it's slow at my dealership 😂 😂 let me say there's more than truth to all Ed is saying. I had to work at many used car lots making no money with barely anyone coming in to just a Chevy dealership at 22. I started out at 19 so I guess I'm doing alright at 4-9 new cars a month with five other sales persons on staff at once. I'm at least making more money at Chevy than all the used lots. I want to be able to work at a Lamborghini dealership and hopefully get to move up to this Mercedes dealership this summer.

Im 35 and have changed income venues several times. I have found the statement "work hard and youll be rewarded by being required to do more hard work" to be very true. Its nearly impossible to find a job that lets you have a personal life and support yourself comfortably. So you need to choose burning yourself out working or living on less and being happy.

Declan P so many people expect thing's to be handed to them. When I was in high school I had myself a truck, a snowmobile, and a dual sport Dirt bike. I had friends in school that used to basically cry to parents to buy them a snowmobile or a Dirt bike. The thing is I got the things I wanted because I was willing to work for them. I used too walk around door to door shoveling roofs and driveways and mowing lawns in the summer till I was old enough for a real job.

My grandfather worked in the car industry for about the last 15-20 years of his career and was always the top in sales. He started his career as an Army officer who ended up working in Washington, then he got his PHD. He tried his thing in teaching and that didn't do it for him. So he went and sold cars. He did really well for himself and I still don't know where he got the money that he has. But he enjoyed doing it. Until the economic downturn happened and he was pretty much forced to retire, since he pretty much taking money from guys who need the money and he was just doing it because he enjoyed it. He didn't work for an exotic dealer and worked for Mercedes, and I feel like he'd fit in better selling Mercedes.

Totally agree. A couple of years ago I had the license to Publish TOP GEAR in my country. 27 Years old and already had a contract with the BBC thanks to my background in the Manga industry (Japanese Comics). Also I had the chance to met the famous trio and invite them and their Producer to dinner. That never happened: “Patagonia Special” was filmed and we all know the outcome. After only 4 issues we closed the company, but, the time we had, the cars we drove and the friends I made, were totally worth it!

As someone who works at an exotic car dealership, his advice is absolutely correct. I started at 20 years old and still in college. Still working there today. Got the job there because I took the time to get to know one of the salesman and eventually was offered a porter job. Now I’m product specialist and work 60+ hours a week minimum. 90% of my job is networking, 5% is selling, and 5% is cleaning up messes. All of it is nothing but hard work. And that last part is the most important. It’s very cutthroat and if you aren’t just the best at your job, but entirely irreplaceable, you won’t have a job for long.

What Ed just said has to do with life in general with any career path. Schooling can only get you so far. I was always told its not what you know its who you know. I was having a conversation last week about what i thought they should teach in high school to help kids get ready for the realy world and my answer was in college the class i got the most out of was effective speaking. Theynshould teach that early on in school because It made me develop skills to not only hold a conversation but how to captivate a audience, once you can do that you can have your network be as big as you want it, the sky really is the limit. Thats when doors start opening up for you in life.

Step one, monitor the jobs page on the website for the factory franchised car dealers near you and apply for every non-management position available. It's better to take a higher position at a mass market brand than be a porter at a mainstream luxury brand (i.e. Mercedes). Step 2 Either work your way up, don't limit yourself to working at the same dealer, or get either an Engineering, Journalism, or Marketing degree. Step 3, at this point paths are diverged enough that you've got to figure it out for yourself.

Step 1: Watch the video. Step 2: Get out there and meet people while doing shitty jobs. Step 3: Don't quit trying

Go look for youth projects by car companies in your area, do this put in a lot of afford and be nice. Then say "I'd like to do more" and with a bit off luck you are in for another internship or job. At least you then know someone.

I started when I was 18 as a car detailer. I excelled quite quickly and became a detail manager (about 30 people under me). When I turned 20 I was promoted into sales. It was tough but I stuck it out. I'm now 37 and am opening a craft beer bar.

My tip would be to ask your way into the industry in person. I started at 17 as a non-experienced salesperson at a Buick GMC. 3 years later after many failures and “no’s” and many people telling me I’m too young for this and that. Now I’m a sales manager at decent big sized used car dealership. My 2nd tip is to be a good person make friends and connections. When you least expect it thanks to that you can get to places you wouldn’t have thought of reaching. Good luck

So basically, if you can't be a shrewd negotiator then you need to come from money.
