@@hananpus slow descents 5-10 times a day. Treat it like an actual workout set. Place your hands correctly as she said. Raise yourself up either jumping up or using a stool. Then hang for dear life. Then control as much as you can on the way down, slowing it down as much as possible. I also did the laying down pullups where you get under the bar, almost lay down and pull yourself.

One piece of advice I always give people who are trying to do their first pull-up is to imagine bringing the elbows to the sides. This pretty much forces the body to use the lats. I have seen people go from 0 pull-ups to 3 pull-ups with this simple trick. On the subject of pull-ups: I made my first one hand pull-up yesterday!

Good video, I am now 71 and feel like 101, when I was in my 40 's I could do 38 pull ups and 60 push ups, I keep trying to get in to shape last year I could do 60 push ups but only 9 pull ups but come summer I stopped working out and now can only do 2 pull ups going to try what you say and hop I can get in better shape this year. It seam as you get older you get out of shape very fast, Just set up a home gym so hop to be able to keep working out all year, but summer gets very busy with garden and canning in the fall. Your video is very inspiring, thank you very much.

I’m 75 and was watching sone young guys at the gym doing a couple of pull-ups. Remembering how I use to do many back when I was much younger I tried one. No way! I wasn’t even close to doing one single good pull-up! So this has been my goal for the last 30 days. I’m doing most of the exercises you have mentioned in this video. I am so close. Actually I haven’t tried one yet and think I may be able to do one. I want to wait until I can do a full one maybe two or three. Actually I want to go to my chest! Thank you for this video. I learned a few pointers. One thing for sure. Don’t let age stop you!!

I have an update. I see it's been a year since my last comment. After a lot of time and a lot of training, I can now do chin ups again. Only a small number of reps but that's still something. Such a great feeling to be able to do them again. I was doing negative chins and inverted rows every second day in my training and that helped immensely. Oh and I no longer get lower back pain when I do dead hangs. When I can do more reps on my chins, I'll start concentrating more on pull ups.

NEGATIVES 100%! I always had a hard time with sticking points, there were parts of the movement my body just didn't understand, muscles would turn on and turn off and I'd just drop uncontrolled through parts. The negatives really helped my body learn to stay activated through the full range of motion.

Meg! This has been something I have struggled with my entire fitness journey. I’m a amateur strongwoman athlete and I still can’t do a pull up yet 🙄

Hi Meg Avi here, this was the most structured video on how to go through progression to get your first pull-up and was also fun. Thanks a ton I am working towards it.

@@sean.momentum hey man i've been binging workout tutorial videos in preparation for my first time going to the gym, and noticed that you've commented under a lot of them. your comments are always so encouraging and nice and i just wanted to say that i hope you're doing well and that it's nice to see your positivity. starting fitness can be very daunting especially with the attitudes of some gym bros so it's cool to see that not everyone is like that :)

@@caramelldansen. hey man so good to hear you noticing me! i couldn't believe it haha. hope you're doing good and ready to hit the gym. I remember the first time i went to the gym, I was excited and clueless. KZbin was not yet a thing back then. so it's really good you're doing your research. also if you need any help with anything, let me know. i'll be more than happy to help you out :)

I did my first ever chin up today, and have found that the eccentric chin up introduced to me here has really helped me progress so much quicker than only using bands and machines! Hoping to get more chin ups and get a pullup this year!

Great video. Ive been swinging kettlebells for a few years and built some killer arms and legs, pullups and dips are something I have neglected. I now have a bar and some instruction on how to use it to smash the lats!

Thanks for the tips. Especially the shoulder shrug lesson. I've been having the most difficulty getting started with the pullup from the dead hang. I can pull myself up on a low bar starting from standing, but can't move very much form the dead hang. I think I'll try doing some of the scap pullups.
