Greg, you inspired me to visit my MSF course area today and practice my low speed clutch maneuvering, low speed cornering, and emergency stopping for a few hours. What a humbling experience and I feel *much* more comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. I would like to extend a *sincere thank you* on behalf of myself, my parents, and my insurance company.

Hey can I ask you - do you think a Yamaha FZ-7 is an appropriate bike for a new rider? I am shopping for my first bike. Wanna stay used and most seasoned riders have told me to stay under 700cc.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
I don't like the term new rider or a bike for a new rider...my gf's 390 Duke is my track bike! It's awesome and I love riding it. I would say test ride as much as you can and whatever bike you get, take it to courses and practice, a lot.
@anon911536 жыл бұрын
I see. I guess I just mean that my experience is limited so far to the 125cc bikes we used in the MSF training. A few guys in videos have suggested that certain bikes are more forgiving for inexperienced riders (ie - some bikes are more "twitchy" on the throttle) - and I believe even in your own experience you expressed that getting a 1000cc sport bike as your first ride was probably something you were not ready for. But I hear what you are saying - practice and technique are the more important things. Thanks!

I am......super impressed......if anyone lived in NYC, going on the small curve on the Brooklyn bridge going from FDR to Brooklyn. I always try dropping that knee for a tiny bit on my 1200 sportster crushing at 20mph. And.....I always end up too close on the line to the other lane. It's really scary and hard because sometimes I feel my lean is too much and I hear my foot pegs scrapping the road.....and if I'm not leaning too much...I'll end up on the other lane when I exit the curve unless I slow down. Sigh.
@AntonioRockGP6 жыл бұрын
There are cruisers with very low big foot pegs. One time I tryed a friend's cruiser and in the second roundabout I was scrapping the foot peg on the ground. And I was not using any considerable lean angle. I was just going around at normal speed. Those foot pegs were just very low to the ground! I don't know if the bike was like that stock or if it was a modification. But I lost all interest in cruisers that day...

I'm sure there's a time and a place for this....but can you show the tightest circle you can make with this movement compared to a proper turning technique? I see a lot of cool "hanging off the bike" close ups, but off in the distance, when making those quick, u-turns, you appear to be pretty vertical on the bike, and making much quicker faster cuts than the cool hang off the bike turns that are highlighted. newer rider, btw, I've only ridden dirt so far
@jayzeeshawn6 жыл бұрын
a lot of inexperienced cruiser riders wreck because they freak out when it comes time to lean the bike in a corner. Cruisers re meant to lean, and physics keeps them stable in a lean as long as the speed is appropriate for the bike to complete the turn before losing traction by a too extreme lean angle.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
Yup!

Maaaan, I wish I could take a class from you on this. I ride a gs500, and I’ve tried moving over on the seat a few times but I find I have to put a lot into the bars. When I move over the bike wants to lean too much, as opposed to the goal of keeping the bike more upright. It’s like I’m fighting to keep the bike upright. I also find I’m having to put a lot of pressure on the outside bar to keep bike tracking and not leaning too much. I know you can’t diagnose my problem from this, but sure wish you could!

Impressive riding skills. I am riding a fully stock Suzuki Boulevard M50 400cc weighting nearly 650pounds and under-powered. Its impossible to turn sharply like this cruiser. So would this be the proper technique to use when taking a hairpin turn? A "V" shaped turn. Kind of like a switch back turn. I wish that I had a photo I could show you. Your going downhill and you literally have to look over a bank & around it to see if there is traffic coming towards you. A slight pressure on the front & rear brake with a little bit of throttle with your clutch in the friction zone. As you shift your weight by positioning your hips to the side of the seat. Then, as you straighten up the bike slightly roll on the throttle as your easing the clutch out slowly? I know that I sound like a beginner but I've ridden dirt bikes when I was younger & have never wrecked or tipped one over. So that's a plus, right?
@MotoJitsu5 жыл бұрын
All depends on your pace...but you never touch the clutch in a turn or before unless you're shifting....you also don't ever need to move your lower body on the street.

Wow! Did you touch the ground with your hand? Very showy👍. Have a beginner’s question, what is the purpose of knee-dropping? Does it help you lean more? Or is it because you lean so much that your knee naturally drops? Or is it just for the fun of it? Looks very good.

WHY LEARN & PRACTICE KNEE DOWN? #1 because it’s fun!! 🤪 don’t need any other reason but if you do want to know👇🏼 #2 Learning to do this provides a way to be comfortable being uncomfortable. It teaches you how to do something that’s challenging, which can be applied to any aspect of your life. Learning and practicing full body position gives you a lot of confidence, it teaches you what your bike is capable of, you learn various levels of grip with your tires, you’ll understand how leaning causes motorcycle to slow down, so you need to slightly increase throttle the more you lean in order to maintain your speed. This is a great way to practice your vision, staying relaxed, committing to a goal, build muscle memory-you’ll learn how the timing of when and how much you move your body makes a difference in how the bike handles. You’ll discover the limitations of yourself, where your fear threshold is, where to place your weight, what’s comfortable for you, etc. If you never learn how to do this or even attempt to, you’ll never understand the difficulty and benefits it provides. Many people simply have never tried, attended a class teaching body position, or practice therefore prematurely say it’s pointless-giving an opinion about something outside your experience is just ignorant. Go practice and see for yourself. Set up a 40ft diameter circle, wear full gear, and get to it. As a reminder, I think knee dragging or any movement with your lower body is 100% unnecessary on public roads. In fact, if you followed behind me on the street, even if we are going at a good pace, I hardly move my body at all, if anything just upper body.

I couldn’t see the crowd very well. But I’m hoping that younger and new riders are engaging with the content. Though around here there are a majority of senior riders. Who surely have their way of riding set in stone for good or bad. So much around here is like perfectly straight roads. Not much challenge in that but you can certainly get into a peaceful place for a few miles. Thank you #fasteddie for another round of wisdom.

whenever I lean my Harley for canyon carving, I find myself moving my butt forward just before the corner to put more weight to the front. Initiate the turn with either counter steer or shifting body weight to the direction of the corner. Then be sensitive with throttle not to upset the suspension, trail break and apply gas at mid point of the corner. Not sure why I do this. Am I doing it wrong? because you said sit back. why I do I feel like applying additional weight to the front?

This is only for knee down, nothing to do with canyon riding

Awesome video as always, this might be a stupid question. How do you keep the bike up from falling on top of you when you are leaning to the side?
