This was one of your most intresting videos uve ever done! good job Jon ! :) More like this! I Would be very much intrested in what the mastering engineer said about Kygos tracks, Especially the new ones are super Crisp, amazing clear mix, amazing strong silky low end and still loud and feel good and big in club speaker and home speaker

I just tried it on a track and went from -10 RMS to -17RMS and was able to limit it all a bit more but I was also able to turn up the volume on the kick. So the end result is louder, sounding a bit more balanced (which I previously tried to achieve by reducing the bass synth's low end impact), and the kick "feels" like it has the same ~60Hz (where my kick was tuned to) oomph. Since it's a 90's style Eurodance song I don't plan to limit the hell out of it for volume, but the end result is still pretty fantastic. Thanks Jon!! (I still have to add a rapping portion to my 90's Eurodance bit so everyone wish me luck on that, LOL)

Things are changing big time regarding loudness!! Spotify, iTunes use LUFS (Loudness Unit full scale) to measure perceived loudness. Spotify uses -14 Lufs. That means that everything above it will get played softer to match the Lufs. But because of this the tracks will sound weaker. Mix with more dynamics. You will sound fuller and better. So when sending music to online services like KZbin/Spotify/Itunes check LUFS and not rms.

Hey Jon, thanks for the tip with the eqing of the fundamental of kick and bass by 2 or 3 db. would you also recommend that for a club track or is this only for the radio?
@Jonsine

try it out. if you feel your track is to quit go for it but in general would reduce kick and bass to much for club tracks

Something that i do that also really helps is by sidechaning the exact kick to the bass. It allows you to keep both at a balance while prioritizing your kicks thump with the lasting power of the bass.

If you want your loud tracks to sound clean do this -- maximize each channel to make the most of dynamic and frequency range, take care of excessive dynamic differences, eq-ing unimportant frequencies out. Do it with measure so you still like what you hear. Big problem are peaks which you can't actually hear therefore learn to use an oscilloscope like Smexoscope while adjusting your sound with a transient shaper or a compressor. Take care!

You could also use more than just one limiter and one compressor on your master. Having two (or more) doing a little compression/limiting is usually a better option, unless you're in for that distorted sound.

I also think arrangement plays a large part. If you have like 16 instruments all doing crazy complex things it is very hard to get it loud as opposed to having very simple arrangement like a kick and a cymbal on every beat and a bass and synth on every offbeat and thats it. It is a lot easier to distort and limit the shit out a minimal arrangement where the sounds don't overlap or clash or could get lost in the noise.

There is one song that breaks all rules. One song that defies the principles of loudness and sub. ONE SONG... (being dramatic here) Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter That fucking song makes my head melt. How did the manage to get so much loudness without losing any bass?! It shouldn't be possible! Vishal Adhikary you might also consider a shure sm58 if you want something that you would be able to use on other instruments as well. Theyre extremely durable and pretty much the gold standard for live vocals. You'd never see an sm58 used in a pro studio for recording, but in that price range, its a great mic to have around and they by no means sound bad.

Jon is it really necessary to make the track -6dB RMS when Spotify will normalize it to -14 LUFS anyways? It's ok if you'd distribute it on CD but that's probably already dead.

+Chaos if it's just for spotify i wouldn't push the limiter as hard cause it really doesn't make any sense but making kick and bass a bit thinner can still help to make seam louder.

Quality mix and mastering is not about how loud you can get a song. The game is all messed up nowadays. Of course you want loudness, but not compressed all to hell where you're loosing the beauty of the music... Buy the way David Guetta knows nothing about music..... You need to go back to school and learn read music..

Your video should be called, "How to continue the loudness war." Or "How to ruin your clients tracks." Have you heard of Replay Gain? Your supper loud hyper-compressed track will get turned right down. Why are you making songs loud? With Replay Gain, compression in radio and normalization in streaming services why are you doing this? Stop killing the dynamics in music.
