This was probably one of the best videos ever teaching how to do the gliss for Rhapsody in Blue. Great job at explaining and demonstrating this technique.

I once sat and watched painfully as a first chair clarinet in a professional orchestra spent an hour after rehearsal trying to master the Rhapsody in Blue gliss for the upcoming concert. He never got it. They had to bring in another player for the solo. So, good for you to have these skills at your age. Hope you are still playing and doing well.

Wow you're in high school with THAT clarinet? That's high quality there. I played a solo in this piece Blue Shades (Ticheli) and kinda thought about it as "kissing" the note. Keep up what you're doing bc I didn't do this until college.

mrbigg151 Thanks! I'm actually in university, I couldn't gliss in high school haha

Oh ok lol but you still have a great tone. Are you considering teaching younger clarinetists? At that level, I found out how much fun it could actually be to play a broader repertoire.

I play violin too and most of all love the piano . Many pianists used to believe they could change character of a sounded pitch by doing something to the keys . I'm not sure spiritually I believe much is possible and body movement and facial expression can subjectively influencewhat an audience perceives and experiences. Lang Lang and GlennGould are beautiful communicative examples of this . Violin vibrato is much easier than this . I compose all day so I really want to learn clarinet had a woodwind class in college 20 years ago - didn't pay attention !

That's the first clear explanation I saw about doing a gliss :D I have the problem that my tone is not going low enough, is it because I'm doing something wrong with my tongue? It is just a quarter tone I can go lower.

I find it hard to lower my note a decent bit. I just can’t manage to get my mouth open enough. I don’t know why. I can lower my notes, but it is just harder to lower it to reach the next lower note. I mean this as if the clarinet had no sharps or flats. I wonder if anyone here has tips. I really want to learn Rhapsody in Blue. Lol. I originally heard it in the 1996 dci show “Another American Revolution” performed by the Glassmen. I found out the name of the song accidentally when I was watching a KZbin video where someone was making a video on a closed hole clarinet. (Forgot if that is how you say it or not, but I think the technical term is “plateau.”) The funny thing is that the song has been recommended to me by KZbin, but I never listened to it. So I was oblivious as to the name of the song until a few days ago. Have a great day everyone!!
