In Jazz, airy sound is very much desired at times. Evokes a sultry mood. It's like someone singing Jazz with a husky sound rather than a full-toned operatic voice.

It's so funny hearing people criticizing someone who is a proven master of the instrument. Whether its jazz, classical, airy tone, vibrato etc. He's paid his dues period! If Mozart was alive today, even he would get grilled on youtube.

During my classic music academy I always wondering why clarinetists don't do vibrato. Now I know:) for some reason, to me, the clarinet sound seems lifeless without vibrato, I used to play the bassoon. :) Nice video !

it airy because in jazz you can't hear the air but only his awesome sound. you see in jazz you have a background band or at least drums which are loud enough.. a dark tone is good.. bluesy

Wonderful!!! A master has a favorite note on his instrument . this was an entirely new concept fo me .I got it immediately and wondered why I had neve heard this issue broached before.I love the open g and A strings on violin .G so low and earthy the ringing , modern steel of the A3 . But the harmonic e above its top e string is a ringer in a concert hall and never to be forgotten . difeent types of vibrato . slow and fat or fast and shivery . wonderful and thank you ! Flutes and piccolos get the best msic along with strings and glockenspie ,vibraphone,claves and other percussion instruments ! in my orchestral music !

so, since I have a natural vibrato that I don't consciously make and much to my own frustration, and that of my numerous teachers and tutors over the years, I can't play a straight tone for the life of me, I shouldn't consider playing the clarinet classically?

@xxyuli Sorry, I made a mistake. And also... 'His F sounds like D sharp' Of course it does! A clarinet is written in B flat, or a step above concert C. Since they SOUND a step lower, their F sounds like an E flat, AKA D sharp.

that is is because of his jazz set up, and that airy sound is not audiable from 3 meters, but he is using very open mouthpiece.

ma lui dice che Nama i bocchini chiusi...
@Supremedalex5 жыл бұрын
I use a very open mouthpiece as well, and I do not get an airy tone, it probably has to do with the level of hardness of reed he is using with his set up, I tend to use a softer reed and I get a fuller, more powerful sound. He probably is using a harder reed giving it that light, airy, and resistant sound.

@xxyuli He was fingering an A. Even considering concert D sharp, or clarinet F, there's no way he could drop 2 whole steps from a mis-tuning. It isn't possible. My favorite note? G twice above the staff. Played right, it's a soothing, yet piercing lullaby of one note.

You guys have to realize that the microphone placement for the production of this film is centered on Mr Daniels voice. That placement is not the same place that an engineer would place a microphone to work the instrument. That's the 'air'.

@thepopshop23410 жыл бұрын
This technique uses a "pitch bend" in which case you drop your jaw, slacken your chin and change your throat. Their is also the technique with your fingers, where you move your fingers across the tone holes whilst playing the notes quickly. I recommend watching the video by Kathy Devries

It's not that he needs more air, it's the resistance of his mouthpiece. Up close, it sounds airy, but farther away, such as in a concert hall, it projects and is nothing but pure tone. Just listen to his recordings, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
