Don't forget the quarter turn when you put the two pieces of pipe together. The demonstrator didn't call that out here, just did it, but another vid I saw the demonstrator said that's to ensure the cement is spread properly.

Thanks for watching. That would have been good to go into extra detail as in most cases a quarter turn is helpful. For larger pipe it is sometimes impractical to give it a turn.

A few things not mentioned (please comment / correct my points?) - The 1/4 turn not mentioned? - Not sanding the edge of the male pipe for better adhesion? - Not chamfering the edge / how to do it fast and effectively...

Some of our troubleshooting videos shows the access and testing of multiple components but fortunately the KZbin chapters makes it easier to navigate. After putting the “glue” how long do I have to join them. I’m asking because of a job I have that will require me to be on crawl space and in the bathroom at the same time for a toilet fitting. If I apply it in the crawl space, get back into the house in less than a minute and install the fitting will it work?

Thanks for watching. It depends on the temperature but you might find that after applying the ABS cement, waiting anything more than 20 seconds, it will harder to a point that it might make it difficult to install. It's worth doing a test first to see exactly what it will do under your conditions.

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. That is a point that would have been worth clarifying on. A quarter turn can help push the pipe into place and help it seal but it's not possible in all cases. When gluing large diameter ABS, it is generally not practical to do a quarter turn.

Hi, very helpful. In my basement, I have a hairline crack in ABS elbow, which means replacing it and the pipe going into it and out the other end. In removing the elbow and relevant sections of pipe, I'll drain off the water and dry the the existing pipe as much as possible. What is best cement to use when repairing ABS pipe where moisture has been present? Thanks.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found it helpful. Always try to dry the pipe as much as possible. In some cases a little bit of moisture won't matter as the pipe cement works via solvent welding, chemically bonding the plastic together. You can always do a test with a spare piece of pipe first just to be sure. There are "all weather" abs cement if you can find it but these are not as common.

Thank you so much for the video. I have a hair line leak in an ABS grade 3 drainage elbow. The leaking elbow is connected to another elbow which connects to a third one, totaling three. Is it possible to cut the 2nd elbow from the middle and use a coupling that will connect the half cut elbow with the new elbow that replaced the leaking one? or do I have to remove the three elbows and install new ones? The reason for my question is that it is to hard to get to the third elbow. I said the word elbow too much in this comment :)
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found the video helpful. It isn't recommended to partially cut an elbow or to connect a coupling to a half cut elbow as it will likely not make a good connection. Replacing the whole leaking elbow will be best.

Hi, for this connection, you’re connecting a p trap to what kind of pipe? Is it just called ABS pipe? I’m trying to find out what pipe I need to connect an ABS adapter to an ABS p trap because it needs a little more reach, and because I’m new to all of this, I don’t know what kind of pipe extension I’m looking for. Is it called Charlotte pipe? Thanks!
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. In this video we demonstrated connecting ABS pipe to ABS 90° elbows. When it comes to p-traps you'll want to use the same type of pipe as what you are joining. Here in Canada ABS pipe is used for drainage. Plumbing codes might be different in some places in the United States or in some municipalities. Though it is not common, there is special cement for adapting between ABS and PVC pipe if needed. When joining PVC to PVC, a 2 step solvent is generally needed.

Does anybody know when ABS is ideal over PVC?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 жыл бұрын
PVC is more flexible, but ABS is stronger and more shock resistant. ABS is also better at very lower temperatures. Still its best to check the plumbing codes in your area as some use PVC and some use ABS.

I've heard that even though the glue sets very quickly you want it to cure for 2 hours before running water through it. Is that accurate?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Caleb, thank you for watching. Always read the abs cement manual as full curing depends on your room temperature and the pressure inside the pipe. If you have a 1-1/2 to 3 inch diameter pipe that was glued at room temperature, then it'll cure in 2 hours and handle up to 180 psi. Above 180 psi will take 12 hours. Abs cement that is applied outside or in a very cold room can take up to 24 or more hours to fully cure as the drying is slowed down.

The pipe from our well is leaking at, or very close to, the 90 degree fitting just at the inside face of the concrete block basement wall. As I cannot access the pipe from the well head (it is buried several fee), I thought to cut a coupling so I might get it around the black pipe without having to cut the black pipe. Then, I thought, with enough Transition Cement I might be able to fuse the coupling to the black pipe (securing it with a hose clamp until set) effectively sealing the leak. My problem is, I am not sure what this black pipe is made of because I am told ABS is only used for low pressure (drainage venting) situations. Is there a way to tell if it is ABS?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there thank you for watching! On a well that is for potable water the black pipe likely ABS but there is a chance that the pipe is CPVC (Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride), which in rare cases can be black.. For testing if it is PVC or ABS there are few suggestions that you might find helpful in this link but it depends on your setup. www.researchgate.net/post/Is_there_an_easy_cheap_way_to_distinguish_PVC_and_ABS

@@AmreSupply Thank you. Interesting site. Of course, my problem is the need for a non-destructive 'test' of the BLACK pipe I cannot remove without jeopardizing my supply of potable water!! Frankly, I am all but certain it is NOT PVC - though some have indicated a black pvc was sold at some point. And, I found a black SHED-80 PVC on a manufacturer's site, but they replied that they never manufactured pipe - just fittings! I think I may go ahead and try TRANSITION cement - maybe in another area first - and see if it appears to melt the two plastics together tight enough to trust over the 'invisible' crack part.

@AmreSupply

Thanks for watching. You are correct. Since ABS and PVC are chemically different, you need a cement specifically designed for use on that type of pipe or you will not get a proper bond.
