The Universal Plater - Chrome Edition Is a great machine for those who want to plate onto chrome plated surfaces. This machine will accomplish all that our Universal Plater will do as well as the functions of our Gold Star without the additional luxury items.
This machine comes with the ability to go in and out of the chrome stripping mode, which requires a reverse polarity. It has an increased power supply of 12 volts and 10 amperes. This will help decrease the amount of time you need to spend stripping the chrome off an item so that you can gold plate it. It is also designed to have a safety function that will de-active the activator and plating ports when in the chrome stripping mode so that you don't ruin your plating job if you fail to switch back to the plating mode.

How hard wearing is the gold? I know some do golf clubs. would it wear off? or would you put on some kind of protective coating? Thanks

How long gold plating will last purely depends on a few variables. 1) How thick the gold is applied. 2) What type of item is it/How will it be handled? The thickness is controlled by how long you plate the item. For instance, if you were to stop plating immediately after the item turns gold, that would be a very thin plate. However, if you spent multiple minutes plating that same area, it would be very thick. The thicker the gold the longer it lasts. Different types of items are handled differently, some a lot and some not at all. If it were a decorative item that is never touched it would stay gold plated indefinitely, could be centuries. If it were something like a Wedding ring that is worn daily, it then depends on how thick the gold is plated. If it were a thin plate it could wear off in a week. If it were very thick, like Vermeil plating (100 micro-inches) it cost last a lifetime. When done properly, gold plating lasts many years if not decades on most items. If it's a thick gold plate, even on an item that is handled properly, it should last many years unless it is purposely removed by abrasive means (polishing etc.)

You could, yes, if they're made of metal. However it is much easier to simply buy a new emblem. Most emblems fall into the $15-$40 range for a brand new one, and brand new always looks better. But if you're set on keeping those exact emblems, you just need to do whatever you need to do to get them to a shiny finish. Keep in mind that if they're plastic emblems, you can't remove a lot of metal or you will get through to the plastic and ruin them.

I already have gold emblems on my car but they have faded. Do I need to strip them or just plate on top of them?

It depends. We always advise people to try it on one and see how it turns out (only apply a thin layer of gold). If it looks good, continue on. If it doesn't, then it will need to be polished off and plated. It's always worth a try to see if it will cover up without having to polish off old gold. If we were doing a plating job we will always polish it off and start over, just to ensure good adhesion and quality plate for the customer.

Are these emblems aluminum? I'm curious as I am looking to work with casting aluminum and plan to attempt to gold brush pieces.

Almost every car emblem is nickel plated and then chrome plated. We do not sell products to brush plate aluminum as it does not work well at all. Aluminum has to undergo special plating procedures and only turns out well if done properly, by a trained professional, in a bath type situation.

I'm wondering that if i plate the toyota emblem in a wrong way and there is some dull spot on it，how to remove the dull spot(the gold)？how to plate it again？in most instances we can't remove the emblem.

Typically when a mistake is made on an emblem you need to polish off the gold using something like "Mother Mag & Aluminum Polish". You need to be careful though that you don't damage the paint around the emblem though. Once you've removed all the gold, you should treat it as if you were just starting on it. Chrome Strip, Activate, Gold plate. Hopefully this helps.

The emblem in this video is actually plastic that is chrome plated. As long as the surface is metal, what is underneath is irrelevant as far as Electroplating is concerned. Any chrome surfaces can be plated in the same way shown in this video.

If you have the Gold Star, the switch that toggles between chrome stripping and electro-cleaning only affects the chrome stripping handle. On the Universal Chrome, when the mode switch is in chrome stripping, the polarity of the chrome stripping handle is reversed and the other ports are disabled. When the switch is in normal plating then the polarity of all three handles is forward polarity. Meaning the item you are working on has the negative charge.
