Holy crap thats a clean blank! What do you use to cut them out? Watching you grind is giving me the idea my belt grinder is way to fast. And only one speed unfortunately.
@StarkKnives3 жыл бұрын
I get some of my blanks waterjet cut. That gives pretty clean blanks usually. Being able to slow the grinder down definitely helps a bit!

@@StarkKnives Yes they are super clean! I am looking at the router speed control boxes. It says they dont work on soft start grinders. How do i know if its soft start? I got the palmgren 2x42.

Question, what do you do post heat treat? Do you go back over the bevels to get them as thin as you need?
@StarkKnives3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! For the stainless steels, I often don’t even have to thin them out though. I just grind to finish thickness and then have them heat treated. The stainless doesn’t warp as easily.
@paulfletcher1133 жыл бұрын
Great video...thank you! Can't wait to give a compound grind a try! What thickness of steel are you using please with an 8" contact wheel? Brilliant instructional video! 👍

I forgot to ask before, what was the grinding wheel running at when you were roughing and finishing The hollow grinds In RPM’S ThankYou or S F M

@StarkKnives2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure actually! I haven’t done any calculations and with the hollow it would be hard. I just go off of what works and feeling. :)
@xaztekgodx4 жыл бұрын
Hi, nice video, I loved it, one question, what's the angle on the tip of it, is it like to be like straight to the how the belt runs? I guess I'll say 90 degrees to how the tip is to the belt, I can't really tell on the video, I already try making a few knives and I always mess up on that part, the tip of the knife.
@StarkKnives4 жыл бұрын
I grind the tip at the angle that makes the front/tip edge be a horizontal line across the belt. So basically you’re holding it so that the vertical of the platen makes a 90 degree with the horizontal of the edge when you’re looking at it from behind. I hope that helps and makes sense. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
@xaztekgodx4 жыл бұрын
@@StarkKnives Thank you so much that helps a lot, I been trying and I already wasted 2 knifes because of that, I was just grinding with no direction, I was just trying to make it work moving the knife all over the place :)

Is this after HT? Im guessing its really hard to finish this grind up if done prior to HT without messing up the beautiful grindlines...?

@@StarkKnives oh really. Nice! Any good tips then for easy cleanup of gunk/miscolour from HT/tempering? Without messing up the grindlines. Appriciate your vids!
@StarkKnives3 жыл бұрын
On stainless steels I just go over with my finishing belt or acid wash. On carbon steels I just do the same grit progression that I started out with before. It’s not really any different than before HT in my experience. 👍🏼

Is your grinder super quiet or did you exit tho noise out? When I'm grinding, there's sparks flying and it's loud! Maybe I should show the speed down...
@StarkKnives3 жыл бұрын
I usually turn the volume of the grinding clips down a bit so they aren’t too loud for the viewer. I have sparks too. This is a stainless steel blade that wasn’t hardened yet, so there are always less sparks that way.
