Such great tips and tricks to grocery shopping. Something that I found to be really easy is keeping a grocery list on my phone under the notes app. It's so handy because I'll never forget my list at home and I can add ingredients that I know I'll need from anywhere. Love this video!

I would have added: shop with the rainbow in mind. Because the more colorful your food is, the more nutrients are packed inside and available to you when you eat it. Things like orange sweet potatoes, red beets, blueberries... all these bright colors clue you in on how powerful they truly are. ☺️

@@lisachandler2010 Depending on the store, you just go and weigh your jars at checkout first. However, not every store will allow this so best to check before lugging all your reusable jars to the store.

You don't think it's dangerous to tell the general public (which might be a portion of your audience) to avoid fortified food? Fortification was done for a reason and you should consider explaining why "synthetic vit. D" should be avoided and not just avoidance of fortified foods in general.
@joyoushealth6 жыл бұрын
Not at all. You absolutely cannot rely on fortification or enriched foods to be healthy. There aren't studies on nutrients other than folic acid that show that fortified foods are improving our health. Folic acid is also the synthetic form that doesn't naturally occur in food. There are also concerns that fortified and enriched foods may be causing people to get harmful amounts of certain vitamins and minerals in their synthetic form. The best advice is to eat a diet in whole foods. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to buy dry lentils than to eat a loaf of fortified bread.
@RozzBerry276 жыл бұрын
@@joyoushealth I understand your perspective but fortification was done so that adults and children wouldn't suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Most peopme who live paycheck to paycheck, or don't even make it and need support, don't have time to make food from scratch for themselves or their families. So without fortified foods they'd get horrible diseases such as rickets and terrible issues with their skin and vision. Fortification isn't necessary for everyone, especially people who do eat as much whole foods as possible and take some supplements. However, when you put content on the internet for everyone to see you should consider that actually everyone has acces to it...and for people who don't know any better, hearing the information in this video might put them at risk. All I'm asking is for you to consider what I'm saying and be more cautious or hive more information that is backed my scientific references.

@@joyoushealth one more thing I suggest you do is research the effects that iodized salt and vit. D fortified dairy has done on a global scale...then tell me fortification is dangerous.
@joyoushealth6 жыл бұрын
@@RozzBerry27 The last thing people need is more salt from a very refined processed source like iodized salt especially in a population that consumes way too many processed foods and therefore getting too much iodine and too little selenium which helps to balance iodine. Too much iodine is not great for your thyroid or your adrenals. Again, this is where nutrients that are naturally occurring in real, whole foods is the best choice. You just can't argue with nature. Vitamin D fortified dairy is also not the answer. Go eat some sardines, much cheaper and way more bang for your nutrition buck than fortified milk and waaaay better for you! :)
Are there any nut milk brands that don’t fortify their milks? If not, how do you get around that? Thanks for the video, I love vids like this 🙏 💖
@joyoushealth6 жыл бұрын
It's definitely gotten harder to find but the main thing is not to rely on fortification for your nutrients (unless you're vegan, you need foods fortified with B12 like nutritional yeast). I think if you're having a bit of coconut milk in your tea each day that's not a big deal. If you make your own nut milks which is super easy you don't have to worry about synthetic nutrients. The point that I didn't make in the video is that these synthetic nutrients won't harm you, it's just better not to rely on packaged foods for nutrients. Hope that helps!
@mamabee21516 жыл бұрын
You should really amend that in your videos to PARENTS , because children will absolutely need fortified nut milks if they're not able to have dairy /soy. Regular almond milk is just water and like 5 almonds. The nutrition is coming from the fortification ...@@joyoushealth
@joyoushealth6 жыл бұрын
@@mamabee2151 Parents who feed their children actual whole foods do not need to provide fortified products, even if they are not consuming dairy. My daughter does not rely on almond milk as a source of calcium or vitamin D. I give her a vitamin D supplement because in the winter in Canada we don't get enough sun but she gets calcium from eating real food like vegetables. If you're talking about a baby (under 1 years of age) then yes, they need an actual formula if not breastfeeding but beyond 1 year, it is not necessary.

@@joyoushealth Oh, I thought in your video you said you advise against supplementing with it? Maybe I heard wrong.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant in my video is to avoid fortified foods and buy whole foods. Most (not all) fortified or enriched foods use very cheap/synthetic nutrients. I'm sure there are some exceptions. But I would not rely on fortified almond milk for vitamin D, I would reco taking a high quality vitamin D and eating foods with vitamin D naturally like salmon, sardines etc.

@@joyoushealth you're correct! But vitamins in food are bound up into complexes too! take spinach for example: the bioavailability of iron in spinach is incredibly low compared to read meat. It is non-heme iron and it is bound up into complexes and contains oxalates. High dose vitamin and mineral Supplements do this cool thing in the body where they don't follow the normal path of absorption, like the nutrients in foods! They can be passively absorbed throughout the digestive track. Please don't bash artificial nutrition. For someone who has had part of their ileum/jejunum/duodenum resected for various medical reasons, supplements are one of the only ways they can get complete nutrition. If that person decided to get their nutritional information from you, instead of their dietitian, it could lead to some serious nutritional deficiencies.
@joyoushealth6 жыл бұрын
@@jdog321123 Agree, not all nutrients in food are in their most bioavailable form (as you mentioned, spinach being a good example unless consumed with other vitamin C rich foods to enhance iron absorption and good fat to enhance absorption of the fat soluble nutrients) but synthetic nutrients in supplement form are not always bioavailable either. Look at folic acid for example or other B-vitamins. Cheaply added B-complex vitamins added to your typical white pasta is going to do little if anything at all. If someone has had part of their intestines removed, it is doubtful they will be getting any medical advice from a youtube video - mine or otherwise. I think you've gotta give people more credit than that. And if you're a dietician I'm sure you'd be recommending they use natural health supplements with bioavailable nutrients anyhow -- not Costco vitamins. My point in this video, which you've taken out of context is to just eat real food and don't resort to using foods that have synthetic nutrients added because they don't offer any viable nutrition on their own.

Don't worry! The only point I really wanted to make was that the majority of your nutrients should come from whole foods vs synthetic nutrients added to food. Often people see "fortified" and rely on these packaged foods for nutrition!

I don’t believe they take out the weight of the bag I had them prove that to me one time and it didn’t work at my store in as busy as grocery stores are there going to take and we not Kroger not Jungle Jims not any of the market that I go to would take out a bag or a mason jar I look for even the tennis bag that I can’t so I’m not even paying another answer to when I’m buying expensive organic foods so that part I don’t understand. But that would be very nice if they were able to do that I love the idea

Avoiding fortified nut milks would be awful advice for anyone who can't feed their child cows/goats milks. You absoultely need vitamin D for the absorption of calcium, as well as additional fats & protein that you're not going to get from watered down almonds. Vitamin D is really important and not everyone can get enough from the sun!
@joyoushealth6 жыл бұрын
I agree vitamin D is extremely important that's why I recommend taking a vitamin D supplement for most people (however, that's not what this video is about). Making blanket statements that people should be consuming fortified nut milks especially when most are fortified with synthetic vitamin D that cannot even be absorbed would be very bad advice. Furthermore, recommending people get their calcium and vitamin D from a fortified nut milk is also not a good idea. Eating whole foods is the best way to get calcium if you're not eating dairy.

As a “nutritionist” you have very little authority. I agree with the fortified foods comment someone else left. I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the organization (they do massive studies across the country in the US with their portable exam units and essentially give people free exams in exchange for using that data) but they have found that children who consume kids cereal have a higher nutritional status (blood tested) than those who are given Whole Foods (eggs and toast, oatmeal, fruit, etc) There’s a reason fortification is there. Your lack of credentials is showing.

@@catbarnard2833 I wish I could. I searched for a good 15 minutes when posting that comment and another good hald hour just now. The only place I would be able to find it is in the online archive for a class I took last year (FSCN 3612 - lifecycle nutrition). I would ask the professor (Renee Rosen) but she passed this summer suddenly after discovering she had a late stage cancer. But if you look up "nutrient status of children who consume breakfast cereals" in an online educational database (not google) then you can find and look through numerous studies yourself instead of taking me at my word
