This was a tough groom. It's a puppy that is fun and happy outside of grooming but since it was matted it was hard to do it's first grooming as a full grooming. Matts are hard to work out, you don't want to have a first impression on a puppy setting the stage that grooming is so tough. But, we had little options. Brushing for hours is not one of them when matts were so tight at the skin. He is jumping and doing what some puppys's do for grooming which make it a dangerous situation.

I love your videos Dede, but I would have liked to see you re-schedule this puppy so that you'd have more time to be calmer and more reassuring to this baby. What is lacking in this video is gentle praise and encouragement whereas what i see as a groomer myself, is this puppy learning to bite.

Reading the comments is giving me the worst case of facepalm-fit. The puppy is weeks old, and already sitting in a coat full of matts, poo, urine and even bugs for god’s sake. The owners were negligent to the extreme. Dede wasn’t even supposed to do a full groom, but he was in such bad shape that she had no choice. Plus, she had to take time off the appointment to educate the owners. It’s not the only client she has, and the people who actually take care of their dog don’t deserve to get their appointment postponed. Stop acting like you know everything. She’s been doing dog grooming for more than 15 years, she worked with veterinarians, and she knows what she’s doing. This dog could have get health problems if she didn’t do what she did. Good job Dede, you’re the best, don’t listen to those jerks who’d rather let their dog suffer because they don’t want to « make it afraid ».

I think you're doing great. I honestly don't understand why people get dogs and won't comb them. I lecture my clients with goldendoodles who think I can magically make the matts go away and leave them with long beautiful hair. We can't just rip matts out. The pet parents need to prevent them.

Ok I realize she needed more time maybe but realistically we can't as business owners inconvenience our clients and ourselves. They might have given up patience and not gotten him done AT ALL. So it may seem like she's being ruff but you can't take hours to reassure especially babies it will just take it time with her to understand she's not going to hurt him.

Allowing your dog’s fur to get like this should be considered neglect, especially around only 4-6 months of age. Also, my Maltese is almost 9, been trained on a lead since he was a puppy and he hates when I touch his front paws and legs, grooming or not, so I think it just depends on the dog in addition to the training. I feel that the circumstances in this situation were unfortunate, yet I don’t see any reason to rush with a matting of this degree, with it being his first groom and all.

I’m assuming the people commenting that she was too rough also aren’t groomers themselves. This is exactly what it can be like in the salon. She wasn’t being mean or abusive at all. The only thing hard to watch about this was the fact that this puppy hasn’t been taken care of since the owners got him. Good job Dede!

I love watching your videos! I have a challenge for you if you want to come to Orlando, FL. My blind 13 year old Maltese doesn't let anyone groom him and he bites and as soon as anyone gets near him with shears or a clipper. Needless to say, his cuts/trims are less often than they should be, which ultimately makes matters worse. Do you recommend I give him some kind of calming aid or sedative?

I thought you handled the puppy's behaviors very well. People don't like to be firm with their pets or their children but behaviors just get worse if you don't follow through with enforcing rules. I've worked as a behavior intervention therapist for children with behavior problems for almost 4 years, and if you let kids get away with bad behavior, they will walk all over you. I don't like following through on my warnings, but I've seen firsthand what happens when you don't. The same goes with puppies. When they bite you, you have to say no and mean it. They want you to stop, so you have to keep going until they know you're the boss. Puppies (and kids) actually like it when adults take the lead. They're not ready to be adults themselves yet and they need to see that example demonstrated to them.

After watching the rest of the video -- man that dog is S.T.U.B.B.O.R.N.! It's an issue of ceding control. The puppy wants to be in control of its own face and not let people touch it, and that leads to mats and infections and pain, so, sorry pup, you gotta have your face cleaned! No dog is born knowing the feel of clippers or brushes or electric blades; it's something they have to get used to, and the only way to do that is to make them get used to it. I had a very sensitive scalp as a kid and I didn't like having my hair brushed. My mom got me a softer brush but said sorry, you still have to have your hair brushed. It's something everyone needs to do. I got used to it and even grew to like it, and this pup will too, once he realizes it's being done to help him (and if his parents actually groom him on a regular basis).

@matcha8904

How are you supposed to handle an untrained puppy then? If you allow them to bite and struggle then it can result in injuries for the puppy and groomer and also cause aggression later in life for the dog because they realize, "Hey! If I bite this lady because I don't want her to hold my foot then I can get her to leave me alone!" and so they have to muzzled/held down while grooming when they get old OR they just don't get groomed because no groomer will take them so they become a matted mess. Please do not criticize a groomer / handler unless you yourself know what it is like to work with struggling animals and sharp blades on a daily basis.

Gosh people are ridiculous with their criticising comments! No this wasn't a great first groom for a puppy, but you had no choice! This is on the owners, not you. As you said, you are normally much more gentle and slow with puppies but you couldn't leave this poor thing in pain and filth. People complain that you are mean to the dog but it's a puppy for christs sake!! If you weren't stern, you would be teaching him that negative behaviours get him what he wants. Keep it up Dede, I think your work and your approach are both great.

Yolanda Barrino so you think it’s ok that the pups owners let it get to that point? There is No excuse for a matted/urine covered pup! Do you brush your teeth before you go to the dentist?? Or, assuming you’re a woman, make sure your lady parts are clean before going to the gyno?? Most ppl do because they want to give the impression, at least, that they’re well groomed and take care of those areas that are about to be looked at by professionals. Why owners think they can bring matted, urine stained dogs in for grooming and think it’s ok is beyond me. And to be clear- no one blames your toothbrush or your soap if you aren’t properly groomed....just as no one should blame a dog for this type of behavior. The owner let this happen. They failed. Letting the dog react to what is confusing and different so it can realize nothing is hurting like she did is better than letting go and reinforcing the bad behavior. Yes it’s a pup and doesn’t know what’s going on. Had the owner brought it in sooner she could have gotten the pup introduced to the process slower. When it gets to this point, It just needs to be done for the pups health. Unless you think it better to have this young pup put under anesthesia for the groom??? Another example: do you go to the hair stylist with mats and urine in your hair? Would you take your child in like that? Then why is ok to bring a dog in like that? Oh she’s being too rough? You say that only because you can’t see in her head and realize the amount of patience she actually has. I’m sorry it is your comment I chose to rant on...really this is for everyone. Do your part pet owners. Set your pup up for success. Prepare them for the appointment just as you prepare yourself for your grooming type appointments. And if after you’ve done your part you still think you know better....then by all means....do it yo damn self. The dogs don’t make grooming stressful...it’s the people on the other end of the leash....smh...

Very informative but uncomfortable video to watch..and I agree that a puppy this age should not exhibit this degree of neglect :/ i do have to point out though, the puppy looks to be exhibiting signs of distress (panting, sticking tongue out and licking lips) just wondering at what point does a groomer pay attention to these signs of distress and decide whether to continue or stop? If let's say the full groom takes about an hour, that's a very long time for a dog to be in such distress.. I've heard and definitely read of cases where dogs have died at the groomers due to extreme stress...if there are signs of distress should a break be in order perhaps? Allow the dog time to relax a bit? Just a thought.

All of these people who are criticizing you are being ridiculous. You're being as patient as you can be without giving into him! If you just let go of him, he learns that 'Oh! If I struggle, she stops!' I worked with animals for 4 years as a vet assistant and you absolutely took the right approach. You didn't muzzle him after he bit you (most people who work in the animal industry would have), you didn't hurt him (all you did was bop him on the nose), and as for people who said you 'pushed him around' and were 'way too rough', how else were you going to move him around? People don't get that puppies fight you every step of the way sometimes. You did great, honey. Keep it up.

that dog's face just kills me, so cute and confused. so many people saying op is too rough but there's a difference between you as an owner grooming your pet and somebody who does it for a living. she can't just sit down in some reclining chair with a puppy on her lap, she's at work and has to get it done. even then, she's probably way more gentle than if you tried shaving your dog. try it, it will not go this well! in all of her videos, anyone who works with animals will see a professional and if any dog was seriously hurting from her grooming, believe me they would have no problem making that very clear!

Don't they shower the dog first and then start grooming(cutting hair)

Nile River no because bathing makes the matting worse so it's easier to shave first then bath layer plus it's easier on the tools

If a dog has matts washing it first can actually tighten the hairs causing 1 a harder groom and 2 pain for the pup

Nile River that's not a good idea to bathe a matted dog it makes the matts tighter biggest mistake you can ever make is to wash a matted dog you always do a rough cut

all my youtubers got it right, don't bathe a matted dog. Binge my videos and you will see this. Brush, first, bathe, dry, brush again.

This is disgusting to watch you are grooming a piss covered puppy that possibly has fleas brushing a combing at mats unnecessarily contaminating all of your tools step 1 wash the dog the pee makes the hair stick together puppy hair is soft and tangles blow out quite easily and if a puppy is afraid of the dryer put it on a low setting or try holding the pup what you are doing is NOT grooming this is one of those basement groomers that people complain about when they bring their dogs haircut to be fixed at a real groomer sad

The negativity.... gawwwwd. You were amazing with this pup. It is so difficult to cut a moving target. You are perfect, and I know you know that. These negative comments are irrelevant and these people are clueless to the profession.

This video made me very uncomfortable. She was much too harsh for a young puppy let alone any dog. It makes me afraid to take my dog to a groomer!!!

Elise Leone she wasn't hurting the puppy she was holding his paws and he decded he didn't want her to hold it. He bit her because he decided that was the best way of getting his way. Most groomers would be to afraid to room a dog like that and that would only make things worse as it would only get more aggressive as an adult. If he learns he can't do that now he won't do it in the future.

Did you miss the part of the video where she said she didn't want to be this rough for a first time groom and didn't want to groom a puppy this young but she had no choice because the parents let it turn into a yellow doormat

There was very little else she could have done. She needs to protect herself and do her job too. Yes, it was frightened and uncomfortable but she's not responsible for training this dog, she's responsible for grooming it. If it wasn't already matted she could have done a more gentle introduction and desensitization as she has in other videos but really, what was she supposed to do differently? Just let the dog go home in the hopes that the owners would train it more? It would have developed more mats. Leave it alone after it started biting? That reinforces a bad habit. Just let it thrash and bite without firmly restraining? It would get itself nicked.
