I'm ashamed to admit that I have neglected, on several occasions, my Shih Tzu's Grooming due to bouts of depression (I get somewhat neglectful when it comes to hygiene when I'm having an episode) He has suffered matting to that extent like the dog in the video. And I've had to request the groomers to shave him off when that happens. But now since I've gotten my depression in check I have been more attentive and decided to buy an electric clipper and some grooming tools and have been watching your videos religiously so that I can groom him myself and never have to put my dog through that hell again. I am so thankful for your videos Jun

UPDATE: Our Chewbaca (who looked just the same as the Shih Tzu except Chewy has his Airedale face) is matte free! It took me a few months since I first watched your video, spending many hours between work with a dull Wahl hair trimmer I've had for decades. Scissors were required but found that the razor helped comb through his thick fur, It was a painstaking, back aching, finger numbing process. We are both happy now and Chewy got his fluffy puppy look back! So THANK YOU DR. JUN SO VERY MUCH!!! for both the inspiration (and perspiration) in being a true exemplar in an otherwise difficult situation.

Thank you so much for all your awesome videos, but this one especially! We recently adopted a shih tzu who we had found in our barn. She is very timid and has clearly not been taken care of. We suspect she may have been a breeding dog for a puppy mill (we live in Amish country and puppy mills are a terrible problem here). Her coat was severely matted and I thought I'd have to shave it off completely, which I wanted to avoid during winter in Ohio. But after watching your video, I went out and got the tools I needed and after quite a bit of effort, I was able to save all of her beautiful coat except one small spot on her backside. Not only does she look great, but she has been much more active and social with us and our other pets! I'm sure feeling clean and comfortable has a lot to do with that. Thanks again!

God Bless you. You do a wonderful job. You have such great patience. I have adopted a 10 yr old stray, blind Shitzu. He was badly matted also. He had a skin and ear infection. Lost most of his hair from the waste on down. His tail looked like Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree. lol He has hardly any teeth due to neglect and the vet had to remove 1 of his eyes also due to neglect. His remaining eye has very low vision. This poor little guy was so sick and depressed when I took him home. Now he is happy, full of love, spoiled and healing very well. I take him to a professional groomer, but I watched your videos to help me learn. I commend you for how you do your job. Thank You for understanding and caring so well for animals.

You are a great groomer! I have yet to meet many groomers like you. You are so patient and good with this dog it is amazing. I'm an extremely passionate person about dog grooming and I have worked for many shops as a dog bather hoping to go to school one day to learn to groom and I am always nervous working with certain groomers because they don't have the passion or care and understanding of dogs like I do. Watching your video was inspirational to me just seeing how awesome you are with dogs!

+Lindsay Larson That's so great to hear - keep following your instincts and your heart. If something doesn't feel right to you, honor your intuition. I'm so excited for you to become a hairstylist for dogs - you're already a groomer if you're brushing and bathing dogs. Technically, brushing a dog or trimming their nails and cleaning their ears is all grooming. You just need to learn the trims and patterns for the haircuts. That takes time and practice, but you'll get there :-) Thank you so much for the nice compliment, and thank you for watching our videos!

It's sad when the owners let their dogs coat get to that condition. I used to work at a dog grooming salon and I used to stress to people the importance of brushing your dogs coat. Even short hair dogs need a good brush out because they can shed quite a bit. If it was me I would have done a complete shave down with a #5 or #7 blade to then try to let the coat grow out completely healthy once more. I have a love for Shih Tzu and a love for the grooming industry and I love this video because I love how passionate you are with your work. :)

I love that you are a fellow groomer who obviously loves her work as much as I do :-) Thank you so much for your comment, and it is especially great knowing that it is a fellow groomer. We understand each other… we don't even have to say anything else do we? It's probably best not to either :-) But you and I… we are creators - we make a positive impact on others' lives every single day we go to work. To me, that is awesome and I'm so happy to meet a co-creator - another artist in that shares my passion. Thank you for watching, and I really do appreciate you taking the time to comment. Namaste - I honor the light that is in you, that is also in me. :-)

thedoggroomer2012 Thank you so much. I love watching your vidoes. I learned quite a bit from them. Thats one thing I love about grooming. Theirs always so much to learn. Its great when you can get a few groomers in a room at the same time and your ideas and suggestions can bounce off one and other. That's why I love going and watching grooming compitions. People don't seem to realize that even short hair dogs need a good brush out as well. I recently came across this with a Labrador Retrevier that I was grooming. He was shedding quite a bit and I knew all he needed was a good brush out and a bath. I love Labs. They are so patient and understanding. For short hair breeds like Joe the lab my go to brush is the Furminator. It helps to get rid a lot of that dead fur. Dogs feel so much better even after a a good brushing. If pet parents just took at least 10 minutes twice a day to brush their dogs coat it can be such a wonderful bonding experience for both. Then when it's then time to bring your dog to the groomers it will make everything a whole lot easier. Your groomer will thank you and it will be less stressful on your dog.

In the summer, my puppy (shipoo) was shaved and he had a lot of scratches on his back! Besides, he is so tiny and the neck shaved looked very thin. I even stopped to make pictures, so "ugly" was my furry baby. Can you please tell me, whether cannot be just cut the bad mats-now on his belly, and leave about 1 inch of fur?!

You are one patient groomer! Poor baby had to live in such a mess of knots and stench, and why did his Mommy allow this to happen. I could only imagine how much pain he was in. Awesome groom and some insight on how that compressed air worked in tandem with the conditioner/detangling solution. *QUESTIONs:* 1. Do you suggest to you clients on how often they should brush their fur babies...especially those with hair such as this? 2. Recommend a grooming schedule?

I love when a dog is left in full coat. I had groomed a beautiful Maltese, Gabriella, whose owner took the time to brush her between grooms and it was so wonderful not to "shave her down" like so many owners request. You really do such wonderful artwork! P.S. I hope you wear a mask when not filming. That hair and dander isn't good for our lungs.❤🐾❤

Glad to see you using the Coat King for this pup's undercoat! This takes a lot of time and patience on both your part and the dog's part. The upside is the dog looks and feels great and goes home tired! Line brushing is a very useful tool as well for those longer coats, following through with a coat king or dematter if needed and just working your way up. I usually start at the left rear leg for some reason..then work my way up the side then start on the other side with the back leg. Nice work!

Thank you so much, again, Cyndi! I really appreciate the comments! You seem so knowledgeable - how long have you been grooming? Honestly, I didn't even know that it was called a Coat King - I called it a bear claw! LOL! When someone would press me, I'd say, "It's a de-matting or carding tool." Another groomer who saw one of my videos told me that it was called a coat king, and to stop saying on the videos "I don't know what this is called, but I call it a bear claw." LOL!
@cyndigwinn2418
@cyndigwinn2418 10 жыл бұрын
LOL, yes it's a coat king. It's used for stripping coats usually, I have a show cocker that I use it on, but it doubles as an excellent undercoat and dematting tool. Since it's a tool that lifts out dead hair and leaves behind good hair, I like it for longer hair breeds as well. It's awesome to thin out long coated dogs too, a lot of those shih tzus (pets not show dogs) need good thinning just so the owner can keep it under control at home (if they so choose). I don't use it on double coated breeds like shelties, collies..those types. I only use a good bath and the high velocity dryer for those coats. I've been grooming for most of my life off and on, professionally for the last 20 years. I love to watch other grooming vids and learn stuff from them. Also being in the show dog world has been a tremendous help in my every day pet grooming.

I sometimes wish I was this kind of person that'd be okay going through and dematting a dog that came in in this condition.. but the few times i actually DID, it just came back in next time looking the exact same way or worse, hence, now I just shave -- not because it's easier for me but because it's easier for the dog. if I leave a dog long THIS time, next time it'll be in far far far worser condition. Here's hoping your clients are less horrible people! You're a fantastic groomer!

I have over fifty request clients. Of these clients, I have TWO. TWO who brush their dogs at home. One only brushes their standard poodle's topknot 'cause I had to shave it off once and they learned their lesson, and they keep the rest of the dog short anyhow. The other is a full coated polish lowland sheepdog that used to breed bearded collies and knew better before they started coming to me. The rest seem absolutely amazed that, despite the fact that they brush their own hair at least once a day, hair tangles!! if it isn't brushed!! Amazing, isn't it. And they are re-amazed every single time I have to shave their matted-to-the-bones dog that it got matted again despite not brushing. Either the people in my area are ridiculously dumb or think I am. But yes! Rainy, you're definitely a groomer's favorite kind of person, haha.

Calin Filip Thank you so much! Blessings to you from Atlanta, GA! I'm eager to see your response video! Using a slicker brush to gently brush the itchy areas will help, but you must be gentle because a slicker brush can cause brush burn if used improperly. That would irritate the skin even more. If you are able to get a boar's bristle brush to brush him with while he is still short, that would be great too. How exciting to have a couple of fans in Romania!! LOL! Thank you so much, and I'm very excited to hear back from you - can't wait to see your video response!

Not if we calculated it at the average groomer's pay ($20-30/hr). We charged an amount that would be fair to us, but not too excessive for the owner. I do not want to discourage anyone from coming because of the price; however, I do charge for my work and I believe that we must put value on our artwork. For me, it is always a struggle to charge someone and ask for payment because it is my artwork, and I would be happy to do it for free. Now I understand why painters usually sell their artwork through an agent. For artists, we have a very hard time valuing and selling our own work. It's either priceless or it's free! LOL! I am getting better at this though - out of necessity, and I'm learning to value my time more. Thank you of for the question, and I really appreciate you watching!

thedoggroomer2012 ''For me, it's always a struggle to charge someone and ask for payment because it's my artwork, and I would be happy to do it for free''. Welcome to the club! Maybe we should make the clients decide how much they value our work and decide themselves how much to pay? That would be interesting to see...But maybe I will try to win the lotery first, and try that later...

LE TOILETTAGE CANIN - DOG GROOMING This is why I love connecting with other dog groomers, artists, because we understand each other's struggles and difficulties. We understand the pain and the pressure - the stress and circumstances can be overwhelming. But we must remind ourselves that we are artists, and we make a positive impact on the lives of the dogs and the owners. I am getting better at charging for my work now that I understand the value of the service we provide. We must consider our own wellbeing and happiness in order to continue to provide great artwork to others. If we are struggling to make ends meet, it makes it very difficult for an artist to create beautiful art.

Thank you so much for the compliment Joelle Lejano! You can do the same thing I did in this video - you just have to believe in yourself. I know that sounds cliche, but it doesn't change the fact that it is absolutely true. You can achieve anything you set your mind to, and the best part is that when you finally achieve the grooming experience you want to have with your Shih Tzu mix you will no longer have an aggressive dog. You were born to be great and achieve great things. Let this challenge be the first of many that you face with confidence, and overcome with the power of love. That's what grooming a dog is: Love in Action. You have so much power within you when you come from a place of love and acceptance. I hope this helps, and I know I'll see your name again someday. :-)

I was a groomer for 10 years and I found the worst thing you could do was wet the dog as that sets the mats. I learned that if you are going to end up doing a puppy cut on the dog, then during the roughing in stage, you can do your scissor cut, snipping off the ends of the mats, then you can brush them right out. Try it and you'll be amazed at how easily and quickly they will come out. Also, I'm very surprised at how much you are still getting out of him at the end of the session. I'm noticing you brushing down his coat from the top layer over and over again. This is actually an inefficient way of grooming the coat. You should separate the coat from the skin section by section and groom from the site of the skin out, then separate about 1/2 an inch down and brush from the skin out. This will remove all the mats from the roughing in stage. Then bath. Then in the finishing stage there will be no more hair to take out. Hope that makes sense. Try it and see.

Hello Patrice :-) For some reason I can't reply directly to your comment so hopefully you'll see this. I really appreciate the comment, and the encouraging compliments! As for the "scabs", it really could be anything and I personally don't like to talk bad about other groomers. We are artists, and we must respect each other. But to answer your question more directly, I would say to go with what your gut is telling you. Trust in your heart, and have the courage to follow what it tells you because it is always looking out for your best. If you feel that your groomer is not a good match for you and your dog, than I would recommend interviewing other groomers in town. I hope this helps, and I really really appreciate you watching our video!

My one Pekingese has an unbelievably long thick coarse double cotton coat that mats in a minute. She was full of mats and your videos really helped me to make her happy and healthy. I have managed to get everywhere else mat free. Thank you soooo much
@JunTheGroomer1
@JunTheGroomer1 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Julia Mueller, and thank you so much for supporting our channel! I really appreciate the positive feedback. Matting in between the paw pads, sometimes in between the toes on the top of the foot, and the sanitary area are the tough spots. One of the reasons is that they are areas that are hard to reach, and another reason is because the skin there is more sensitive so they react much more painfully. Most of the time the matted hair is already pulling at the skin, causing pain, and that is why they do not want us to mess with that area - because it hurts! We must be very gentle and take that into consideration. Once the dog is convinced that you are only going to help, in my experience, they are willing to tolerate almost anything when they know what you are doing and why you are doing so. I can make a video to show how I do it on a certain dog, but another dog will react differently because every dog has a different personality. The best advice I can give for those situations is to know what the end goal is, and to keep that end goal in mind. How you get there may depend on several factors and the plan of action may change several times during the process, but always move with a purpose and work methodically. This will give the dog the sense that you are confident and you know what needs to happen so they are more likely to trust you. If a dentist came at my mouth with shaky, nervous hands I'd fly out of the seat. It wouldn't matter how nice he was, if he wasn't calm and confident, I'm outta there because dentists scare me. I hope my answer helps, and I'm really really thrilled that you like our videos! Thanks again, Julia!

@JunTheGroomer1
@JunTheGroomer1 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment, and I'm so happy that this video was helpful. I'm not sure any dog could stand still for 4 hours straight - we have to break the process up into steps with breaks in between. I usually work on the coat for about an hour and give them a break - this also give the skin a chance to cool down because it does stimulate the skin when we card out the dead hairs. I usually charge about $80-100 for a job like this - no less than $70. Thank you again for watching!

I think you did a good job of getting the matts out.. But.. When I groom I always use a belly loop so they won't fall and they are more secure ..and some dogs like to try to jump on you when you are trying to groom them ..I don't know if you know what a groomers helper is but you basically attach it to the pole on the table and then attach it to the head loop and it keeps their head in one place so they can't jump or spin around ..I use it all the time it helps a lot

That was a lot of work, but certainly well worth the effort. Dogs do know how they look, it's in the way they walk, the pride they feel looking and feeling good goes a long way towards how they behave, as well. My shihtzu does like to be groomed but not shaved right down, in the summer I have him shaved right down as we live in the country with lots of ticks and other critters who love to pick on my baby! He is not tall so he is easy picking for these little creatures, so when we come back from the groomers he sulks for a day or so then shakes it off and goes back to his happy wee self!
@JunTheGroomer1
@JunTheGroomer1 8 жыл бұрын
+Ray Mary Berry The summer shave... just my personal opinion, but I really don't agree with summer shave downs. The melanocytes in dogs skin do not behave like ours - we tan, dogs cannot. Under direct exposure to the sun, the melanocytes rapidly multiply and over time the end result is a tumor. Another reason is because the oils being produced by the skin uses the hair as a way to travel. Without the hair there anymore the oils cannot move along the coat, and like sitting water it can get yucky. Movement is life, and oils protect life. We want to keep the oils moving and spread them evenly throughout the coat to keep the skin and hair protected. All this happens on a cellular level, which is why we don't see tumors or hot spots immediately. I see older Labs and Goldens with huge lumps and bumps all over their skin, along with other skin issues - and every single time they have been shaved every summer their whole lives. We can never escape the accumulated effects of cellular damage. If you are going to shave, just keep this information in mind. I would suggest leaving at least a 1/4 inch of hair so that the skin will have some protection from the sun, and the oils will have some hair to travel along. Thank you so much for watching our videos, and for taking this into consideration. :-)

Thank you so much for watching and leaving a feedback, Heather. I'd be happy to. I used a slicker brush to break up the top layer and most of the big balls of matted hair. Other tools I used are a de-matting rake (there are different handles, shapes and sizes to match each person's preference), a coat king (or I like to call them bear claws because of the way the teeth are shaped - I have one that has 8 teeth and another with 12 teeth. Each one works differently on different coat types, but a good rule of thumb is to work from coarse down to fine.), a wooden coarse comb, a greyhound comb, and a matt splitter. All of these tools can be found online on Amazon, Ebay or Petedge.com. Hope this information helps, and happy grooming!

@JunTheGroomer1
@JunTheGroomer1 9 жыл бұрын
+Morelle Earl I usually break them up with a slicker, unless they're really matted. Then I'll use a mat splitter first and then comb them out with a greyhound comb. Sometimes I'll have to use a de-matting rake before the greyhound comb though. Unless the dog is not cooperative or intolerant. Than I just cut them out with scissors or shave them. It really depends on the type of matting, and the dog's willingness to cooperate. Thank you for the great question! I really appreciate you watching this :-)

I have a 5 month shih tzu who has a few mats. Some big, some small but it's definitely not all matted like this dog's coat was. I visited a groomer today that told me I had to shave him down but I'm really against the idea. I asked if there was any other option and he said either he shaves it all off or shaved off just the mats, which will leave basically shaved patches. I didn't decide right away so I'm going back tomorrow but I really wanted to know if you thought it was possible to save his coat. I am willing to even detangle it myself if I have to. This was an amazing video, I hope you'll see this message :)
